🇮🇱Mossad: Cyprus used as transit point for Iranian kamikaze drones
Israeli intelligence services have uncovered a secret network of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Among the transit countries was Cyprus. The operations were overseen by IRGC intelligence officer Mahdi Yeke-Dehghan, known as "the Doctor" .

📦 What exactly was done:
Smuggling kamikaze drones from Iran through Turkey to Cyprus. Additionally, gathering intelligence on the US Incirlik air base in Turkey .

🔍 Network exposure:
The network was led by Rahman Moqadam, head of the IRGC's Unit 4000 (Special Operations Division). He and senior officials Majid Khademi and Mohsen Suri were reportedly killed in Israeli airstrikes during a recent military operation against Iran that began on February 28 . Israeli authorities stated that the exposure of the network "deprives Tehran of plausible deniability for terrorist acts carried out by hidden cells" .

🇨🇾 Cyprus's response:
There have been no official comments yet. However, President Christodoulides has previously stated his readiness to cooperate with allies in the security sphere. It is worth noting that in June 2025, an Azerbaijani national holding a British passport was arrested in Cyprus and charged with espionage and terrorism offenses — he was allegedly gathering intelligence on Israeli targets and military bases in Cyprus under direct orders from handlers in Iran .

📺Less than two weeks left until May 1: Cyprus television switches to a new standard
As of April 30, 2026, the old digital terrestrial television platform (DVB-T) will cease operations. It will be replaced by the modern DVB-T2 standard. This change only affects those who watch TV using a room antenna. If you have cable or satellite television (e.g., Cablenet, PrimeTel, NOVA, Cyta Vision, Epic TV, satellite dishes) — you won't notice a thing.

⚙️ What needs to be done by April 30?

1. Check your television. If it was purchased after 2015–2016, it most likely already supports DVB-T2.
2. Run an automatic channel scan. For compatible televisions, this is enough to continue watching TV for free.
3. Buy a set-top box. If your TV is old and does not support the new standard, you need to purchase an external DVB-T2 decoder (set-top box). It connects to your TV and antenna. The cost is around €25–€35.

🔧 What is DVB-T2?

It is the second generation European standard for digital terrestrial television. Compared to the old system, it offers better sound and picture quality, allows you to watch channels in HD and 4K, and provides a more stable signal.

🇪🇺Is Schengen for Cyprus being delayed? What's really happening and what are the options
Cyprus is technically close to joining the Schengen zone, but the process could be delayed for several more years due to political hurdles and specific issues related to the divided status of the island.

📌 The current situation depends not only on Cyprus but also on an EU decision.

🔹 What has already been done

By the end of 2025, Cyprus had largely met the technical requirements, including integrating the Schengen Information System (SIS) . The next steps are:
— The European Commission must give its final assessment
— Then, all current Schengen member states (29 countries) must vote unanimously to approve Cyprus's accession

❗ However, some countries remain concerned about the "Green Line" — the buffer zone separating the Republic of Cyprus from the northern part of the island — which they see as a potential loophole for illegal migration into the EU .
🔍Possible Scenarios

✅Optimistic — as early as late 2026
Cyprus receives approval without major delays and joins Schengen during or shortly after its EU Council Presidency in the first half of 2026 .

👉 What this would mean:
— Travel within Europe without passport checks
— A boost to tourism
— Simplified business and logistics

⏳Realistic — 2027 to 2028
The most likely scenario. Formally, Cyprus is ready, but:
— Final technical evaluations are still underway
— Political discussions continue, particularly regarding the Green Line
— An adaptation period of at least six months would be required after approval to configure systems and train personnel

👉 A transitional arrangement is possible:
— Partial Schengen (e.g., air travel only, with passport checks possibly remaining for arrivals from northern Cyprus)
— Spot checks at certain entry points

❌Pessimistic — indefinite delay
Even if Cyprus is fully ready, approval could be blocked at the EU level.

📍 The main obstacle
remains the same — the Green Line, which the EU may be forced to treat as a strict external border under Schengen rules, potentially hardening the island's de facto division .

👉 Consequences would include:
— An indefinite postponement of accession
— Reduced investment appeal
— Political tension with the EU
Conclusion:
Cyprus is making real progress toward Schengen membership, but the timeline remains uncertain. The most realistic scenario points to 2027 at the earliest.

🏛️Cyprus President warned by Europe over possible ties with ELAM party
European level attention has turned to how the political position of Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides is perceived.

🇪🇺 European People's Party leader Manfred Weber has stated that an impression is being created that the president is moving closer to the far‑right ELAM party. According to him, this could have serious political consequences for Christodoulides within the European centre‑right .

⚠️ What this means:
If this image persists, Christodoulides risks facing political isolation from his European partners and losing influence within the EU's centre‑right political bloc . This would mean finding himself pushed toward more marginal political groups — a deeply negative prospect for a president who invests in his image as a reliable European leader .

📌 For the president, this is a sensitive moment: he positions himself as a pro‑European leader and has built relationships with key EU figures — Ursula von der Leyen, Roberta Metsola, and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis .

📊 Domestic context in Cyprus:
With parliamentary elections approaching on May 24, the president needs parliamentary support. Polls suggest that the parties currently backing him — DIKO, DIPA, and EDEK — may perform poorly .

🤝 In this situation, different alliance options are being considered — including a possible rapprochement with DISY, although the party officially remains in opposition . However, around 65% of DISY is currently against cooperating with Christodoulides, while about 30% is more positive . The president is reportedly betting that a weak DISY election result could create internal party pressure to join a governing arrangement.
📌Simply put: the president is currently balancing domestic politics with the expectations of the EU — and any move toward radical forces could cost him support in Europe .

⛽Cyprus prepares for possible fuel disruptions: EU plan to be presented tomorrow
Minister of Transport Alexis Vafeadis has stated that Europe may face short-term fuel supply disruptions due to the crisis in the Middle East. There is currently no shortage in Cyprus, but authorities ask the public not to create a rush at petrol stations .

📢 What the minister said:
— "We are facing the likelihood of a shortage of transport fuel" .
— Cyprus has no problems with petrol or jet fuel for now, but preparations must be made in advance to avoid panic and queues .

🇪🇺 What the European Commission will propose:
Tomorrow, April 22, the EU will present the AccelerateEU plan . Key measures include:

· Electrification of transport – reducing taxes on electricity to make it more competitive than oil and gas .
· Increasing sustainable aviation fuel production – nearly 40% of the EU's kerosene is imported, much of it via the Strait of Hormuz .
· Coordination of reserves – joint management of oil reserves and gas storage .
· Demand reduction measures – possible recommendations for EU countries (e.g., remote work, public transport development).
⚠️Why this matters for Cyprus:
The island is completely dependent on fuel imports. Any supply disruption via the Strait of Hormuz would quickly hit petrol, diesel, and jet fuel prices – and consequently tourism and air travel.

🐷Foot‑and‑mouth disease in Cyprus: 24,000 pigs to be culled in Paliometocho – total infected farms exceed 100
In the Paliometocho area (west Nicosia), an outbreak has been detected on a third pig farm (5,000 head). Together with the two previous farms (4,000 and 15,000), the total number of animals to be culled has reached 24,000. The cull is expected to be completed by the end of April or early May.

⚠️ Alarming detail: the virus has reached Paliometocho, which is far from the original quarantine zones. This raises serious questions about how it is spreading.

📊 Overall statistics:
— Infected farms on the island now exceed 102
— The virus is spreading faster than the mechanisms put in place to contain it

🕵️ What authorities are investigating:
— Illegal movement of animals or feed
— Vehicles that were not properly disinfected
— Transmission of the virus by people or mechanical means (especially during the Easter period)

🏛️ What next:
The crisis will be discussed in the parliamentary agriculture committee. Breeders are in despair and demanding immediate financial support.

👶Cyprus: social workers threaten strike over delayed transfer of migrant children's shelters
The PASIDI union is demanding that Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Kleia Hadjistefanou-Papaeillina present a plan for the transfer of shelters for unaccompanied migrant children to the Deputy Ministry of Migration by May 21. The transfer of authority must take place within a year — and no later.

— According to PASIDI, the Migration Deputy Ministry's bill once again leaves some functions with social services
🗣️Deputy Minister of Social Welfare promised:
