๐ŸŒซ๏ธDust in Cyprus causes surge in hospital admissions: OKYPY takes measures to accommodate all patients
The increase in atmospheric dust has led to a massive influx of patients into Accident and Emergency departments (TAEP) and a rise in hospitalizations. Those most affected are people with respiratory and cardiac conditions, as well as allergy sufferers.

๐Ÿฅ What OKYPY (State Health Services Organization) says:
โ€” All TAEP departments were on full alert and managed the increased pressure
โ€” The rise in hospitalizations has required the redistribution of hospital beds
โ€” Some patients need several days to recover, which makes bed availability challenging
๐Ÿ˜ท Recommendations:
โ€” People with chronic conditions (pulmonary and cardiac) should limit travel during periods of high dust concentration
โ€” The risk of developing symptoms increases significantly on such days

๐Ÿ”ฅFire drill in Limassol: don't be alarmed by rescuers at the skyscraper on April 23
Tomorrow, April 23, at 10:00 AM, the "PYRSOS 2026" exercise will take place at the Limassol Del Mar high-rise complex (Germasogeia). Firefighters will simulate extinguishing a fire and rescuing people.

๐Ÿš’ What residents will see:
Many fire trucks and rescue personnel. Don't be alarmed โ€” this is only a drill.

๐Ÿ“‹ What will be practiced:
โ€” Access for emergency vehicles in the dense coastal development
โ€” Evacuation from upper floors (the complex's towers reach 170 metres)
โ€” Pumping water to height
โ€” Coordination of teams

โš ๏ธ Why this is necessary:
Limassol Del Mar is one of the tallest residential complexes in Cyprus. Regular drills are not conducted in such buildings. Additionally, this will test the building's own safety systems (firefighter lifts, evacuation routes, fire suppression).

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Fire Service request:
Do not block access routes, follow instructions from personnel on site. Do not call emergency services โ€” there is no danger.

๐Ÿ“šSchools in Cyprus closed for Archbishop's feast day โ€” parents outraged, teachers explain
Tomorrow, April 23, schools at all levels will be closed โ€” it is an official public holiday for Saint George's Day (the name day of Archbishop Georgios). Parents have been expressing their discontent on social media.

๐Ÿ˜ก Why parents are unhappy:
โ€” No one to leave their children with (not everyone can take time off, grandparents can't always help)
โ€” Loss of instructional time (two weeks of Easter break, and now another day off)
โ€” Some comments are directed against teachers: "Unacceptable. They think everyone has the option not to work."

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ What teachers say in response:
Schools and teachers are not simply "babysitting places." The educational process is their job. Public holidays are not set by teachers but by regulations.

๐Ÿ“œ Background:
In 2023, Archbishop Georgios himself asked for this holiday to be cancelled in order to add more school days. He proposed moving the feast to January 7. But the Ministry of Education rejected the proposal. Since then, the issue has remained unresolved.

๐Ÿš”Paphos: 27-year-old arrested with drugs โ€” two more found in his home, one escaped via balcony
Yesterday afternoon in Paphos, YKAN (drug enforcement unit) officers stopped a car driven by a 27-year-old man with a 33-year-old female passenger. Inside the vehicle, they found cannabis (6 g), cocaine (approx. 1 g), and methamphetamine (approx. 1 g). The 27-year-old admitted the drugs were his and was arrested.

๐Ÿ  House search:
Based on a court warrant, police searched the 27-year-old's home. In a ground-floor bedroom, they found two unknown men. One escaped by jumping from the balcony. The second (aged 28) was detained and turned out to be an illegal resident in Cyprus โ€” he was also arrested.

๐Ÿ’ฐ In another bedroom (locked, with the 27-year-old holding the keys), they found:
โ€” 13 bags of cannabis (approx. 14 g)
โ€” 161 bags of synthetic cannabis (approx. 40 g)
โ€” Digital scales with traces of cannabis
โ€” A sum of cash was also seized from the car

๐Ÿš๏ธ Limassol: forced evictions from dangerous buildings begin โ€” residents refuse to leave
Limassol authorities (EOA) have initiated forced eviction proceedings against residents of the Seagate apartment building in Germasogeia. The building has been declared dangerous. The deadline for voluntary evacuation has passed, and the case has now been handed to lawyers โ€” a court order for forced eviction must be obtained.

โš ๏ธ Similar measures are being prepared for 36 additional apartment blocks. Warnings in Greek and English have already been posted at their entrances.

๐Ÿ  Why residents are resisting:
โ€” Many have not been properly informed
โ€” Owners of apartments in the Soulla Court complex claim the building was renovated in 2017 and that no official inspections have been carried out since then
โ€” Owners are demanding technical justifications for why their buildings have been placed on the "blacklist"

๐Ÿ“Š Scale of the problem across Cyprus:
Total โ€” over 1,300 dangerous buildings.
โ€” Nicosia: 1,466 cases, 268 require immediate intervention or demolition (161 in the historic centre)
โ€” Larnaca: approximately 500 problematic structures
โ€” Paphos: 226 officially dangerous buildings
๐Ÿ›๏ธ What the government is preparing (by summer 2026):
โ€” Disconnection of water and electricity in buildings subject to evacuation
โ€” Criminal liability for renting out dangerous housing
โ€” Public register of dangerous buildings
โ€” Demolition at the owner's expense (if they ignore orders)

๐ŸซSocial workers outraged: schools are hiring not only them, but also sociologists
The Ministry of Education announced a pilot recruitment of specialists for five schools. The announcement listed not only social workers but also sociologists, social management specialists, and social policy specialists. This has provoked a sharp reaction from the Cyprus Association of Social Workers.

๐Ÿ“œ What the association says:
โ€” The profession of social worker is legally registered. Only social work graduates who are members of the professional register may practice it.
โ€” The inclusion of other specialisations does not comply with the law.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Ministry response:
A representative of the Ministry of Education contacted the association, acknowledged the problem, and promised to correct the announcement. The key requirement will be social work specifically and registration with the association.

๐Ÿšœ Farmers to block Rizoelea junction tomorrow: "It's a crime to kill all the animals"
Tomorrow, farmers from across Cyprus will gather at the Rizoelea roundabout (Limassol) to protest the mass culling of animals due to foot-and-mouth disease. If the authorities do not respond, they threaten to close the airports next week.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Farmers' representative Stella Petra (Alpha):
"We want to send a signal to the world, to Europe, and to our government: what they are doing is a crime."

โš–๏ธ Main demand:
Stop the mass culling on farms where only a few cases have been detected. Farmers claim that EU Regulation 2020/687 contains a legal "loophole" allowing an alternative to mass slaughter.
