๐Ÿ”Ž 1967 Air Crash in Cyprus: the Lakatamia tragedy still remembered today
On April 20, 1967, a major aviation disaster occurred in Cyprus. A Swiss passenger aircraft, a Bristol Britannia operated by Globe Air, crashed in the Anthoupoliโ€“Lakatamia area near Nicosia.

โœˆ๏ธ The aircraft was operating an international flight when, for reasons not fully established at the time, it lost control and went down on land.

๐Ÿ“ The crash became one of the most tragic events in the islandโ€™s civil aviation history and left a lasting impression on local residents.

๐Ÿ“Œ The incident drew international attention and contributed to later reviews of aviation safety measures.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Today, it remains part of Cyprusโ€™ history, reminding us of the cost of errors and the importance of continuous improvements in aviation safety.

โ˜• Drinking coffee on an empty stomach? Doctors explain how it affects blood sugar โ€” and why the habit may backfire

Caffeine on an empty stomach can cause a temporary spike in blood sugar and reduce insulin sensitivity. This effect is especially noticeable in people with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.

๐Ÿง  How it works:
Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors (linked to relaxation), triggering the release of adrenaline and cortisol โ€” stress hormones. As a result, cells temporarily become less effective at absorbing glucose. Add the โ€œdawn phenomenonโ€ โ€” a natural morning rise in cortisol โ€” and you get a double impact on blood sugar levels.

๐Ÿ“Š What studies show:
โ€” 2โ€“3 shots of espresso can raise post-meal blood sugar and insulin levels compared to decaf
โ€” Regular consumption of black coffee (without sugar) may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, thanks to polyphenols
โ€” The paradox: short-term negative effects, long-term benefits

โ˜• What do you add to your coffee?
Sugar, syrups, and cream can turn it into a โ€œsmall sugar bomb.โ€ Two teaspoons of sugar equal about 8โ€“10g of fast carbs. Add a croissant or cookies โ€” and the glycemic load spikes even more.

๐Ÿ’ก Practical tips:
โ€” Donโ€™t replace breakfast with coffee
โ€” Pair coffee with protein, healthy fats, and fiber
โ€” Gradually reduce sugar
โ€” Consider decaf, especially if you have metabolic issues
โ€” Safe intake: up to 400 mg of caffeine per day (3โ€“5 espressos), but for those with diabetes or prediabetes, a personalized approach is recommended

โš–๏ธ "Santi" case: Cabinet to decide tomorrow whether to appoint independent investigators
At Tuesday's meeting, the government will consider three options: appoint an independent investigator, appoint an investigator to oversee the police (as in the Avvakoum case), or continue the investigation by the police while awaiting Europol's forensic results.

๐Ÿ“Š What has been done so far:
โ€” Approximately 30 statements have been collected
โ€” The investigation team has been strengthened (two additional investigators added)
โ€” SMS messages, audio files, mobile phones of former judge Christodoulou, two of "Santi's" phones, and the phones of lawyer Nikos Kleiridis are being examined

๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช Trip to Germany โ€” a new detail:
Journalists Drousiotis and Orfanidis claimed that "Santi" travelled to Germany (to a victim support centre in Heidelberg) in March 2021. However, the investigation has shown that "Santi" herself denies ever having been to Germany. Checks of airport entry/exit systems so far do not confirm her trip. On the other hand, it has emerged that a close relative of "Santi" resides permanently in Heidelberg.

โš–๏ธ What will happen tomorrow:
Nikos Kleiridis's legal team will file a request with the Supreme Court today or tomorrow to annul the search warrant executed on Holy Saturday (when phones, a USB drive, and email were seized).

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Lawyers' position:
Christos Kleiridis (lawyer) stated: "Appointing independent investigators is already a one-way street. The police investigation will not convince society of its independence."

๐ŸšจShocking case in Limassol: 14-year-old gives birth after rape โ€” 19-year-old arrested
A horrific crime is being investigated in Limassol. A 14-year-old girl has given birth to a healthy baby and claims the pregnancy resulted from rape. A 19-year-old foreign national has been arrested. He has been charged with sexual violence against a minor and rape. The Limassol court remanded him in custody for five days.

๐Ÿ“… Timeline of events:

November 5, 2025: The 14-year-old was taken to Limassol Hospital with unbearable pain. It turned out she was 34 weeks pregnant. Doctors performed an emergency delivery and notified the police.

After discharge, the girl was placed in a "children's home." Initially, she claimed not to know who the father was. Later, she stated that the child was the result of rape and gave minimal descriptions.

January 2026: In a new interview, the girl said the incident occurred near a kiosk, where an unknown Syrian man approached her. He took her to a secluded location in Limassol and raped her.

Later โ€” more detailed testimony: The girl was in a park near her home with another minor when a man approached and led them into a car. He acted friendly at first, then locked the doors, drove to an isolated place, offered an energy drink and cookies. After that, she does not clearly remember what happened, but realized that sexual contact had occurred.

๐Ÿ” Investigation:
After three interviews with the victim and a series of inquiries and tests, investigators identified the 19-year-old suspect.

โš–๏ธ Charges:
Sexual violence against a minor, rape, abduction, unlawful imprisonment, threats, carrying a knife.

๐Ÿ”Ž1967 aviation disaster in Cyprus: the tragedy near Lakatamia that is still remembered
On April 20, 1967, a major aviation disaster occurred in Cyprus. A Swiss passenger aircraft, a Bristol Britannia operated by Globe Air, crashed in the Anthoupoliโ€‘Lakatamia area near Nicosia .

โœˆ๏ธ The airliner was on an international charter flight from Bangkok to Basel, with scheduled stops in Colombo, Mumbai, and Cairo. Due to severe thunderstorms at Cairo, the crew diverted to Nicosia . While attempting to land in a violent thunderstorm, the aircraft struck a hill near Lakatamia and burst into flames .

Victims and survivors:
Out of 130 people on board (120 passengers and 10 crew), 126 lost their lives . Only four people survived: two German passengers, one Swiss passenger, and a Swiss flight attendant. Three of them were seriously injured, while the fourth survivor, Nicolas Pulver from Switzerland, reportedly escaped with only minor bruises .

Cause of the crash:
The investigation concluded that pilot error was the primary cause. Both pilots had exceeded their authorized duty time by nearly three hours. Additionally, the first officer had less than 50 hours of flying experience on the Britannia type . No technical malfunctions were found with the aircraft .

Aftermath:
The disaster remains the deadliest aviation accident in Cyprusโ€™s history . It drew international attention and led to a review of aviation safety measures at the time. Just six months after the crash, Globe Air declared bankruptcy and ceased operations .
๐Ÿ‘‰Today, this event remains a somber part of Cyprusโ€™s history, a reminder of the price of human error and the critical importance of aviation safety.

๐Ÿš๏ธDangerous buildings in Cyprus: authorities lack tools for immediate evacuation
The District Self-Government Organizations (EOAs) state that current legislation does not grant them real authority for the rapid evacuation or sealing of dangerous structures. The procedures are lengthy and over-bureaucratized.

๐Ÿ“œ What the law says (Articles 15Aโ€“15E of the Streets and Buildings Regulation Law):
Under Article 15B, the competent authority may enter a dangerous building on its own initiative and take all necessary measures to eliminate immediate risk. Through written notice, it may also demand that the building be vacated. If the request is refused, the authority may apply to court for an eviction order .

โš ๏ธ But in practice:
Even if one accepts that the EOAs have such powers, the process remains chronically slow. Example: buildings have been officially listed as dangerous since 2017 (9 years ago!). The Germasogeia Municipality, and later the Limassol EOA, could not issue an evacuation order. Multiple letters were sent. But there was no result.

The tragic collapse on Aeschylou Street in Germasogeia on Holy Saturday, which claimed two lives, exposed the serious weaknesses in the current legislation . The building had been classified as dangerous and owners had been informed as early as March 2026 of an imminent collapse risk , yet no effective action was taken.

๐Ÿ”ง Key gaps in the law:

ยท Owners can challenge findings in court, a process that takes considerable time
ยท No provision for ex parte court orders to enable rapid evacuation
ยท No ability to disconnect water/electricity to pressure occupants to vacate
ยท No authority to seal dangerous buildings or demolish them as a risk removal measure

๐Ÿ“Š The scale of the problem:

ยท 1,287 dangerous buildings were inherited by the EOAs from municipalities and district administrations
ยท In Limassol province alone, an estimated 780 dangerous buildings exist, of which 80 are considered extremely dangerous and at risk of collapse
ยท About 270,000 buildings in Cyprus are over 25 years old, with no mandatory inspection regime in place

๐Ÿ’ก What is being proposed:
Pending legislative amendments include simplifying notice procedures, allowing demolition of dangerous buildings, introducing ex parte court orders, prohibiting use or rental of declared dangerous buildings, and enabling water/electricity disconnections and sealing of properties .

Following the Germasogeia tragedy, authorities in Limassol have begun posting notices on dangerous buildings and moving toward legal action where tenants fail to vacate . Similar urgent inspections have been launched in Larnaca . However, with parliament facing dissolution, there is insufficient time to pass the relevant legislation even if the will exists .

๐ŸซVandalism at Polis school: unknown persons blocked locks with toothpicks โ€” classes started late
On Monday morning at the Polis Chrysochous secondary school (Paphos), unknown persons broke into the building and blocked the locks of more than ten classrooms by inserting toothpicks and wooden sticks into them. Classes started with a slight delay โ€” staff and cleaners urgently replaced the damaged locks.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Pavlos Charalambous, President of the School Board:
Such acts of vandalism do occur, especially during periods when schools are closed (holidays, weekends). The principal discovered the problem in the morning and immediately mobilized staff.

๐Ÿ“น What is being done for security:
A study for the installation of a video surveillance system has been completed. The tender will be finalized next week, and cameras will be installed in all three educational institutions of the complex (primary school, gymnasium, lyceum), which are located on the same premises.

๐Ÿš๏ธHundreds of dangerous buildings in Lefkara remain unresolved โ€” including historical structures and abandoned properties
In the municipality of Lefkara (Larnaca district), a serious problem has been building up. According to mayor Sofoklis Sofokleous, hundreds of buildings in the town and surrounding villages are in a dangerous state.

๐Ÿ“Š In Pano Lefkara alone:
โ€” 555 protected (historical) buildings, many of which are deteriorating
โ€” approximately 100 Turkish Cypriot houses, some in critical condition

The situation is similar in other settlements: Vavla, Layia, Skarinou, Kefalos, Delikipos, and Kato Lefkara.

โš ๏ธ Why this is dangerous:
Some houses could collapse at any moment. In certain cases, they have already had to be demolished to prevent tragedies.

๐Ÿ“ข What the mayor says:
The issue has been raised for years. According to him, appeals to ministries and parliament have yielded no results.

"We are constantly reacting after something has already happened. Without concrete solutions, the situation does not change," he noted.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ What next:
The municipality does not want to demolish historical buildings en masse, but due to the lack of state action, it is sometimes forced to take extreme measures for the sake of public safety.
๐Ÿ“ŒThe main question remains โ€” will a systemic solution emerge, or will things continue as before?
