🔊The water in the dams of Cyprus has risen, but the threat of deficit has not disappeared: «We have enough for 2027-2028»**
**Despite the heavy rains, which gave the fourth best inflow in a decade, the situation with water reserves remains extreme. This was stated by the chief engineer of the Department of Water Development Yannis Ikonomidou.
Numbers:
• Over the past three days, the dams have received 12.3 million m³ of water - the most powerful inflow since January 2020.
• The total occupancy rate as of March 23 is 26.9% (a year ago it was 24.7%).
• Since the beginning of the hydrological year, the inflow has reached 59.8 million m³ - the fourth best result in ten years.
• The dams of Armina, Xiliatos, Argakas, Pomos, Kaloanagiotis, Cleri, Soleas and Limbia were overflowing.
But the risks remain:
Reserves make up only a third of the total capacity of reservoirs. Iconomidu emphasised: water is needed not only for this year, but also for 2027-2028. Therefore, everyone will have to save money - both citizens and district administrations, who should reduce losses in networks.
Water from the overflowing dam Armina is not lost - it is transferred to the Southern Conveyor and Kuris, which allows you to accumulate the resource.
The rains don’t stop:
In March, precipitation has already reached 149% of the norm - 92.4 mm. Only over the last weekend, 37.3 mm fell, which is 60% of the monthly norm. It helps, but, as noted in the department, it’s too early to talk about water security. The coming weeks until the end of April will be decisive for the assessment and planning of measures for the summer.

🔊💸The fraudsters lured €300 thousand from 18 people, promising to sell land in northern Cyprus😱
In the criminal court of Limassol, two women - 44 and 53 years old - pleaded guilty to real estate fraud. They had previously denied the charges, but changed their position during the trial.
How the scheme worked:
Between 2023 and 2025, the defendants deceived at least 18 people, most of whom were relatives. Victims transferred money in cash and through Revolut for «assessment of objects», «registration of documents», «court costs» and other services. The total amount is about €300 thousand.
One of the fraudsters presented herself as a lawyer with connections in the occupied territory, the other - an intermediary who allegedly had access to a Greek Cypriot investor buying such real estate. It was mainly about sites in the Famagusta area.
The 44-year-old recognised 16 points (12 episodes of fraud and 4 - money laundering), the 53-year-old - two points.
Why it’s important:
Real estate fraud in Cyprus is systemic. Since 2023, more than 565 criminal cases related to violations in this area have been registered. Typical schemes are the sale of objects without property rights, forged documents, extortion of money under the guise of «accelerated procedures».
The court has already handed down harsh sentences in such cases. In 2025, Israeli developer Shimon Aykut was sentenced to five years in prison for selling real estate on the land of Greek Cypriots in the northern part of the island. The amount of transactions exceeded €38 million. Now it’s this couple’s turn.
The court will announce the verdict in the near future. The investigation continues.**

🔊A new mouth-and-mouth disease has been confirmed in Gary: more than 22 thousand animals have already been destroyed
On Monday, veterinary services identified a new case of foundrid-and-mouth disease at a sheep and goat farm in Geri (a suburb of Nicosia). The total number of infected farms reached 45, sick animals - 725.
Facts and figures:
• 22,600 sheep and goats, 1,500 cows were destroyed.
• Immunisation: 98% of cattle, 72% of sheep and goats. The second stage (revaccination) has begun.
• EU experts confirmed that the measures are being followed, but pointed to the dissatisfaction of farmers and political pressure that hinder deterrence.
Violations:
Cases of illegal movement of animals continue to be identified. Among them are 130 cows on an illegal farm in Livadia, about 100 heads in Zeri and Lakatamia, as well as cattle transportation in Potamia. In some episodes, the animals were without identification tags.
Compensation:
Farmers began to receive advances - up to €50,000 per farm. The first tranche covers the loss of livestock, then the amounts are calculated individually, taking into account income and expenses.
For those who comply with the rules, the authorities promise to replace the livestock: negotiations are underway with France and Spain, they will allow the use of healthy vaccinated animals from the local market. But those who violated, there will be no compensation. The investigation continues.
