🔊The Cyprus reality of discrimination: why do the laws not work, but the problems remain?
The issue of racial discrimination remains acute in Cyprus, despite the existing legislative framework.
Commissioner for Human Rights Marie Tanner-Lottidi emphasises that European standards remain only a declaration if they are not implemented in practice. Her department regularly records cases of discrimination and hostility. Many victims do not seek help, having lost faith in justice.
The problem has become more sophisticated, affecting employment, access to housing and education. The Commissioner insists on urgent measures: raising the awareness of civil servants and forming effective protection tools so that 2026 becomes a turning point in the struggle for equality.

🚢HMS Dragon delayed en route to Cyprus
Three weeks after the Iran-linked drone strike on RAF Akrotiri, the Royal Navy destroyer HMS Dragon has not reached Cyprus. London says the ship is "on its way"; Housing Secretary Steve Reed says the refit took six days instead of six weeks to speed deployment, but gave no arrival date. Dragon sailed from Portsmouth on March 10 and had not appeared in the Eastern Mediterranean by Sunday. Defence officials say Dragon, armed with Sea Viper, is part of wider reinforcements including Typhoon and F‑35 jets, helicopters and extra air‑defence personnel; nuclear submarine HMS Anson is in the Arabian Sea.

Hail is possible during thunderstorms, and snow and night frosts are possible in the Troodos Mountains. During the day, the temperature is about +18...+19°C, it is much colder in the mountains.

🎤"My recommendations were not forwarded" — Maria Pappa to Interior Ministry over shelters
Maria Pappa, former Civil Defence chief reassigned to the Audit Service, issues public statement on shelter deficiencies. From April 2021 she found the programme weakened by understaffing and lack of a specialised structure. She says she submitted repeated, documented proposals, including creating a specialised professional branch, but the Ministry did not advance them. Despite limited resources, Civil Defence carried out inspections and volunteer training. Pappa rejects claims issues were not raised and affirms commitment to protecting citizens.

📜Russian ambassador: NATO “relic of another era” — Cyprus divided on accession
Russian ambassador in Nicosia Murat Zyazykov says pre-election debate shows calls to reassess Cyprus’s foreign policy and restore dialogue with Moscow; elections are internal but ties can deepen. He notes strong Russian interest: over 64,000 Russian visitors in 2025 and some 150,000 permanent residents. EU sanctions strained Russian businesses and banking activity; Russia remains top FDI source though reduced. He calls NATO a relic of a past era, says Cypriot opinion on joining is split. Restoring direct flights could boost tourism; Schengen unlikely to deter visitors. After a drone strike on a British base security measures increased; Moscow ready to assist evacuations.

Doctors have certified she cannot travel and paperwork was sent to DWP. Staying with friends in Cyprus, she cannot return for a Norwich magistrates hearing while payments remain frozen despite enquiries by her, her niece, the MP and the consulate.

🔊Wolt courier attacked in Limassol: group on motorcycles disrupts delivery
Another incident involving a Wolt courier occurred during the day on Archbishop Makarios III Avenue, near the Agios Nikolaos roundabout.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver had just picked up an order and was about to leave when a group of individuals on motorcycles approached him.
📍What happened:
• The courier was stopped just a few meters from the restaurant and subjected to threats and intimidation
• The attackers removed the orders from his delivery bag, effectively disrupting the delivery
The situation changed after a witness intervened — he began recording the incident and warned that police would be called. Following this, the individuals returned the orders and fled the scene.
Around five people on three motorcycles were involved. All were wearing helmets and hooded clothing, attempting to conceal their identities.
This is not an isolated case. During the recent courier strike, there were reports of attacks on working drivers, vehicle damage, and attempts to block deliveries.
Some protest participants insist the demonstrations remain peaceful, claiming that aggressive actions are carried out by individuals. However, the repeated nature of these incidents suggests possible coordination.
