๐ Iran strikes US base in the Indian Ocean: missile range shocks allies
Iran reportedly launched a strike on a US and UK base on Diego Garcia using medium-range ballistic missiles, according to WSJ.
None of the missiles reached their target: one was intercepted, while the other malfunctioned.
However, the key concern is not the strike itself, but the distance. The island lies about 4,000 km from Iran.
Tehran has demonstrated it can strike much farther than previously believed.
Earlier, Iran warned the US of an โunprecedented responseโ if there were any attempt to seize the strategically important Khark Island.
Iranโs allies could also target key routes in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

๐What if the internet disappears in Cyprus tomorrow? Without warning
๐ค Imagine waking up โ no connection, Telegram wonโt load, banks are down, businesses freeze. This is no longer just a fantasy.
๐ชAmid the conflict in the Middle East, 17 key undersea cables in the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz are at risk โ these routes carry a major share of traffic between Europe, Asia, and Africa.
๐If damaged, they wonโt be repaired quickly: repair vessels may not be allowed into high-risk zones. At the same time, attacks on infrastructure are already being reported, including data centers in the region.
๐จ๐พ For an island like Cyprus, this is especially critical: its connection to the outside world depends heavily on these links.

๐Cypriots are already paying the price of war: fuel prices rise by 22 cents, electricity to increase by up to 20%
The conflict in the Middle East has reached the wallets of Cyprus residents. From February 27 to March 19, 95-octane gasoline rose by 14.3 cents per litre, diesel by 22.7 cents, and heating oil by 18.7 cents. And this is just the beginning, experts warn.
What is happening with prices
Geopolitical tensions have hit global oil prices: Brent crude reached $102 per barrel. EAC Chairman George Petras calculated that if the price remains at $102โ105, electricity tariffs will increase by 5โ7% in May. At $110โ115, the increase could be as high as 20%.
President of the Petrol Station Owners Association Savvas Prokopis describes the situation as "extremely fluid": new wholesale prices arrive every 2โ3 days. From March 3 to 19 alone, there were six price hikes.
Worst-case scenario
Energy expert Charalambos Charalambous does not rule out that if Israeli strikes on gas and oil facilities continue, Brent could soar to $150. In that case, petrol in Cyprus would reach โฌ2.15 per litre.
What consumers can do
โข Compare prices at petrol stations and choose the cheaper ones.
โข Save energy and avoid unnecessary travel.
โข Opt for local products โ they are less dependent on imports and supply chain disruptions.
โข Plan purchases and avoid spontaneous spending.
Authorities have not yet introduced price caps, considering them ineffective amid the global surge. However, they promise subsidies if needed, similar to 2022โ2023. The tourism industry is already feeling the pressure: bookings are stalling just as the season begins.

๐Millionaires Behind Bars: 5 High-Profile Cases Where Money Didn't Save Them from Prison
On March 20, it marked 50 years since the sentencing of Patty Hearst, the heiress to a newspaper magnate, who was convicted of armed robbery. We recall several other high-profile cases where wealth did not protect from prison โ and sometimes even pushed people toward crime.
1924: Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb โ two 19-year-old heirs to multi-million-dollar fortunes decided to commit the "perfect murder." They lured a 14-year-old relative, killed him, and sent a ransom note. But Leopold dropped his expensive custom-made glasses โ which led police to their trail. Sentence: life imprisonment.
1976: Patty Hearst โ in 1974, terrorists kidnapped the 19-year-old heiress to a newspaper empire. A few months later, she announced she was joining their ranks and robbed a bank. During the trial, the defense argued "Stockholm syndrome." The jury sentenced her to seven years, but President Carter released her after 22 months, and Clinton later granted her a pardon.
1995: O.J. Simpson โ the ex-husband of Nicole Brown and her lover were found stabbed to death. Gloves with bloodstains, shoe prints โ everything pointed to him. But the lawyers won the case: the gloves didn't fit, and they failed to prove he wore those shoes. In a civil trial, he was ordered to pay $33.5 million.
1997: John du Pont โ heir to the DuPont chemical empire ($200 million) shot Olympic champion Dave Schultz in front of witnesses and exchanged gunfire with police for two days. The mentally unstable millionaire was sentenced to 30 years. He died in prison.
2015: Robert Durst โ heir to a real estate empire, he was suspected for decades in the disappearance of his wife and the murder of a friend. In 2015, he agreed to appear in a documentary about himself and, in a bathroom, forgetting his microphone was on, muttered: "Of course, I killed them all." That proved fatal. He was sentenced to life, but died shortly after filing an appeal, remaining technically innocent.

๐Tears and Crowds at the Funeral of Chef Andreas Mavrommatis: Cyprus Bids Farewell to the Man Who Brought Cypriot Cuisine to Michelin
At noon on Sunday, the funeral of Andreas Mavrommatis took place at the Church of Archangel Michael in Agios Ioannis (Spiliotissa). The church could not accommodate everyone who came to bid farewell to the legendary chef. Among those paying their respects were former President Nikos Anastasiadis, Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos, ambassadors, friends, family, and the residents of the village that Mavrommatis never forgot.
The funeral service was led by Archbishop of Cyprus Georgios. Words of gratitude were spoken over the casket: from his fellow villagers, he departed as an "emissary of the village"; from his family, as a warm and generous man; from all of Cyprus, as the man who brought the taste of his homeland to the global stage.
Andreas Mavrommatis passed away suddenly on the night of March 14, at the age of 69, from cardiac arrest. He was born in this village in 1957, and in 1977 he left for Paris to study psychology, but ultimately became a chef. He trained at the Gaston Lenรดtre school, drew inspiration from Auguste Escoffier and Alain Ducasse, and in 2018 became the first Greek-Cypriot chef to receive a Michelin star.
Together with his brothers, he created the "Mavrommatis" group โ restaurants and shops in France and Cyprus that blended Mediterranean traditions with French technique. He wrote books and ran restaurants where presidents and stars dined. But despite his global success, he remained deeply connected to his roots. As was said at the funeral: his talent, his soul, and his cuisine will remain with us.

๐Petting a Cat and Giving It Compliments Is Good for Its Health, Cypriot Veterinarians Say
Veterinarians in Cyprus confirm that kind words and gentle petting help cats feel safe and strengthen the bond with their owner. This reduces stress levels, has a positive effect on the nervous and cardiovascular systems, and also stimulates appetite and activity.
So if your furry friend has once again settled on your keyboard or is demanding attention in the middle of the workday โ don't shoo them away. Give them a stroke, say something nice. This isn't spoiling them; it's taking care of their health.
Go pet your kitty. And don't forget the compliment.๐ฑ

๐21 Countries on Fire: The War in the Middle East Has Already Affected Cyprus and 13 Other Countries in the Region
The conflict that began on February 28 has long since expanded beyond the borders of Iran and Israel. According to the latest data, 21 countries have been directly affected, 14 of them in the Eastern Mediterranean. In Cyprus, residents have already been evacuated from their homes. The numbers speak for themselves:
People:
โข Iran โ 1,444 dead, 19,324 wounded, 3.2 million internally displaced.
โข Lebanon โ 912 dead, 2,221 wounded, over 1 million displaced persons.
โข In Lebanon, 5 hospitals have been destroyed, another 6 severely damaged, 44 primary care centers are non-operational.
โข Approximately 120,400 people have already crossed from Lebanon into Syria, placing strain on an already weak infrastructure.
Energy and Economy:
โข Brent crude oil prices have exceeded $110 per barrel. Every +10% in oil prices adds up to 0.4% to global inflation (IMF data).
โข Due to strikes on refineries and storage facilities, toxins are released into the air, increasing the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
โข Desalination plants have been destroyed โ millions of people may be left without drinking water.
โข The World Trade Organization forecasts global trade to fall from 4.6% in 2025 to 1.9% in 2026.
Healthcare Under Attack:
โข Lebanon โ 33 attacks on hospitals, 31 healthcare workers killed.
โข Iran โ 20 attacks, 9 killed.
โข Palestine โ 31 attacks on medical facilities since the beginning of the year.
โข Iraq โ 37 healthcare workers killed, hospitals are overwhelmed.
The scale of the conflict has already extended beyond the front lines. Fuel and food prices are rising across the world, while the most vulnerable countries in the region are losing healthcare systems and access to clean water. Cyprus finds itself at the epicenter of a humanitarian, energy, and economic tsunami, without even firing a shot.
