๐ Greek F-16s in Cyprus: National Guard trains in network-centric warfare and allied coordination
The presence of multinational forces in the Eastern Mediterranean has given the Cyprus National Guard a unique opportunity to sharpen its network-centric warfare capabilities. According to Philenews, officers are gaining valuable experience in real-time coordination and information sharing โ key elements for the effectiveness of modern military operations.
Particular attention is focused on Greek F-16 fighter jets currently operating from the Andreas Papandreou Air Base. Pilots from the 340th and 343rd squadrons (โFoxesโ and โStarsโ) of the Hellenic Air Force 115th Combat Wing based in Souda are becoming familiar with Cypriot airspace and the regionโs operational environment.
Since March 2, the Cyprus National Guard has taken responsibility for coordinating and directing four fighter jets. Joint exercises with forces deployed in the region are expected in the coming days. Practicing cooperation in real conditions is seen as one of the most valuable benefits of allied presence on the island.

๐Cat shot with an air rifle in a residential area of Larnaca: environmentalists demand the shooter be found
The Cyprus Ecologists Movement has reported new cases of animal cruelty on the island. In Larnaca, a cat was shot with an air rifle in a residential neighborhood.
Two additional incidents were reported in Paphos province. One cat was found paralyzed with a pellet lodged in its body and had to be euthanized, while another animal was discovered with multiple shotgun wounds.
Environmental activists say these are not isolated incidents but part of a wider and ongoing problem. Animal protection groups regularly receive similar complaints. They also warn that the use of weapons in residential areas poses a danger not only to animals but to people as well.
โToday the victim is an animal, tomorrow it could be a person. Impunity only breeds more violence,โ the movement said in a statement.
Police have launched an investigation, while activists are calling for strict enforcement of animal protection laws and real penalties for offenders.

๐Argakas dam overflows near Paphos, but authorities warn water reserves remain critically low
At around 08:30 on Monday morning, the Argakas Dam began to overflow after recent rainfall. The reservoir has a capacity of about 990,000 cubic meters, making it the smallest among Cyprusโs major dams.
The dam is part of the irrigation network of the Chrysochou Valley and operates together with nearby reservoirs including Evretou Dam, Agia Marina Dam and Pomos Dam.
According to district engineer Mr. Kasioulis from the Department of Water Development, every rainfall is extremely valuable at the moment because overall water reserves across the island remain very low.
Officials stress that the overflow at Pomos and Argakas should not create a false sense of abundance. With water demand rising, residents are urged to use water carefully and responsibly.

๐ Georgian burglary gang in Limassol used ัะฟะตั-level tactics: cameras hacked, security doors opened without traces
Police in Limassol have arrested three Georgian nationals suspected of carrying out a series of burglaries in upscale residential areas, including Panthea, Agios Athanasios and the Germasogeia Valley.
According to investigators, the group operated with a high level of organization. They reportedly used specialized tools capable of opening reinforced security doors without leaving visible signs of forced entry. In some cases, they also monitored apartments remotely through hacked webcams.
The suspects waited until residents were away before entering the properties. Police say the burglars managed to break in without damaging locks, and in several cases even removed locking mechanisms entirely.
The detainees โ a 49-year-old man and two 38-year-olds โ were found in possession of jewelry, watches and other valuables believed to be connected to at least ten burglaries over the past two weeks.
All three resisted arrest, and the documents they carried turned out to be forged. Authorities are now working with Interpol and Europol to confirm their real identities.
Police are calling on possible victims to come forward and help identify the recovered items.

๐Cyprus firefighters crack down on Easter bonfires: 45 fires reported, crews attacked with stones
The Cyprus Fire Service has raised the alarm over a surge of early โlambradjiesโ โ traditional Easter bonfires โ being lit by teenagers across the island, even though Easter is still weeks away. Authorities say around 45 fire incidents linked to these bonfires have already been recorded.
Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis warned that the early collection of wood and the growing activity among young people is getting out of control.
In two separate cases, firefighters responding to extinguish bonfires were pelted with stones, and emergency vehicles were damaged. The attackers have not yet been identified.
Over the past 24 hours, the Fire Service has also responded to 58 weather-related incidents, including fallen trees, damaged vehicles and downed power lines. No injuries were reported.
Authorities are urging parents to keep a closer eye on their children and reminding the public that lambradjies can pose serious risks not only to the environment but also to those lighting the fires.

๐Ayia Napa worried about 2026 tourism season amid Middle East tensions
Growing instability in the Middle East is already raising concerns in the tourism sector of Ayia Napa. Local authorities, hotel owners and tour operators recently held an urgent meeting to discuss how to protect the islandโs 2026 summer tourist season.
Mayor Christos Zannettou said that while the concerns are real, there is no reason for panic. According to him, the priority now is coordinated action to ensure that Cyprus does not gain the reputation abroad of being an unstable destination.
Participants of the meeting proposed several measures, including requesting government support to protect jobs in the tourism sector, possible wage subsidies, and expanded unemployment benefits during periods of reduced demand.
Another key focus is maintaining hotels in operation even during the winter months to preserve confidence among international partners and travel agencies.
Zannettou stressed that Cyprusโs international image as a safe tourist destination is a national priority, warning that delays in responding to the situation could seriously affect the industry later in the year.

๐Digital Documents Become Mandatory in Cyprus: Companies Can No Longer Demand Paper Copies
The Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy reminds that electronic versions of ID cards, driver's licenses, roadworthiness certificates (MOT), and fan cards in the "Digital Citizen" app have the same legal validity as the original paper documents. All organizations, companies, and professionals are required to accept them without exception.
Since May 2025, the Cypriot app has been integrated with the Greek Gov.gr Wallet โ documents are now mutually recognized. Cypriots can present digital IDs and licenses in Greece, and Greeks can do the same in Cyprus.
By the end of 2025, new features and documents will be added to the app, including identification for foreigners. The authenticity of a document can be verified directly through the app โ no additional equipment is needed.
Refusing to accept a digital copy is equivalent to refusing to accept a paper document. Details are available on the website digital-citizen.gov.cy.
