Cyprus firefighters declare war on Easter bonfires: 45 arson incidents, stones thrown at rescuers and fallen treesWith Easter still nearly a month away, teenagers have already begun lighting
lambradjies (traditional Easter bonfires). The Fire Service has recorded about
45 fires started by minors. Spokesperson
Andreas Kettis warned that wood is being collected far too early and that youth activity is getting out of control.
In two incidents, firefighters who arrived to extinguish the fires were
pelted with stones. Fire service vehicles were damaged, and the attackers were not identified.
Over the past 24 hours, the service has also responded to
58 calls related to bad weather, including fallen trees, downed power lines, and damaged cars. No injuries were reported.
Authorities are urging parents to keep an eye on their children and remind the public that
lambradjies are dangerous not only for the environment but also for the young people who set them.
