👩‍❤️‍👨 Oral sex now linked to rising throat cancer risk: doctors in Cyprus issue warning
What was once rarely discussed is now a growing medical concern. Human papillomavirus (HPV), often transmitted through oral sex, is increasingly linked to oropharyngeal cancers — in some cases surpassing smoking and alcohol as a major risk factor. Experts in Europe and the US are already calling it a “silent epidemic.” Cyprus is no exception.

📊 Key facts to know:
• Having more than 6 sexual partners increases the risk by up to 8.5 times
• High-risk strains: HPV-16 and HPV-18
• Around 70% of cases are diagnosed in men
• Most HPV infections clear on their own — but some can develop into cancer

In Cyprus, HPV vaccination is available, yet many people still associate the virus only with cervical cancer — not throat cancer.

Doctors urge people to stay informed, get vaccinated, and undergo regular check-ups.
Especially men, who are statistically at higher risk.

Routes impacted include Bahrain, Tel Aviv, Haifa, Doha, Beirut, Dubai, Delhi, as well as select flights to London. In Paphos, only the Haifa route was affected.

Airlines continue to adjust schedules in real time. Passengers are strongly advised to check their flight status in advance before heading to the airport.

🌿 “Are you sure this is Cyprus?” Tourists can’t believe what they see
It’s not the beaches that surprise visitors the most — it’s the side of Cyprus no one expects.

Lush green forests, flowing rivers, and cool mountain valleys completely break the stereotype of the island as a dry, sunburnt resort. Places like the Troodos mountains reveal a totally different Cyprus — fresh, vibrant, and unexpectedly wild.

Even locals admit:
👉 this is the part of the island that truly shocks visitors
👉 and often changes their entire perception of Cyprus
Sometimes, just one video is enough to make you want to see it for yourself.

⛷️ British skier turns World Cup race into a “beer marathon” — drinks 12 bottles and drops out
A British cross-country skier made headlines at a World Cup race in Norway after turning a 50km competition into something very different.

Gabriel Gledhill reportedly drank around 12 beers and several shots of Jägermeister during the race. The outcome was predictable — he fell far behind and eventually finished alongside participants from the women’s race, who had started 45 minutes later.

The unusual performance quickly went viral, raising questions about discipline and professionalism in elite sport.

Reports also suggest the incident may have affected his status in Norway, with authorities refusing to extend his residence permit.
🍺 A “boost before the finish” — just not the kind that works.

🔊 “€8 for the war”: veteran’s blunt testimony shocks Cyprus Parliament
A session of the parliamentary committee on refugees in Cyprus was abruptly halted by a powerful and emotional statement from MP Georgios Penitaex. His personal account from the 1974 war left the room in silence.

He described how, at just 19, he found himself in the middle of combat in the Five Mile area during the Turkish invasion. Two fellow soldiers were killed beside him, while another was torn apart by an explosion: “We couldn’t even find his remains.”

The MP admitted he still lives with the trauma — loud noises trigger the feeling of being back in a war zone.

The core of his speech focused on the state’s response. For his injury and service, he receives about €8 per month. Veterans’ associations backed his claims, saying the current system fails to reflect the real sacrifice of those who fought on the front lines.

The statement sparked strong reactions and once again raised questions about support for 1974 war veterans.

🔊 Telegram crackdown intensifies: over 114,000 groups and channels removed in a single day

Telegram has hit a new moderation peak, deleting 114,348 groups and channels in just 24 hours — the highest figure since March 10.

The scale of the crackdown has surged this month. In the first 18 days of March alone, access has been restricted to 1,547,231 communities, including 9,439 linked to terrorism.

📊 Since the start of 2026:
— more than 10.1 million communities have been blocked
41,619 of them related to terrorism

Experts say these numbers point to a significant tightening of moderation and increased pressure on illegal content across the platform.

🔊 Hidden man-made waterfall in Cyprus: how a former asbestos mine created a secret spot in Troodos
Deep in the Troodos Mountains lies an unusual place many people pass by without noticing — the Amiantos waterfall. Unlike most waterfalls on the island, this one was created by human intervention, not nature.

The site is directly linked to Cyprus’ industrial past and one of Europe’s largest asbestos mines. During mining operations, the natural river flow had to be redirected due to waste deposits and pollution risks.

Engineers solved the problem by carving a tunnel through the mountain, allowing water to pass safely. This artificial diversion eventually formed the waterfall seen today.

🌿 Locals add a mythical twist, telling stories of a mountain nymph who once guarded these waters — but the real story is a mix of engineering and history.

Today, the spot blends nature, industry, and mystery — and without knowing its exact location, you might walk right past it.

🔊Power crisis in Cyprus: EAC workers halt operations, accuse authorities of inaction
On the morning of March 18, employees of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) staged a three-hour strike from 8:00 to 11:00. Trade unions warn the energy sector is reaching a critical point, blaming the lack of strategic planning and what they describe as government inaction.

In a letter to the board, unions said meetings with officials have taken place, but no real decisions followed. Meanwhile, the situation continues to worsen, affecting both consumers and the wider economy.

Instead of addressing key issues — energy supply stability, consumer support, and lowering electricity costs — authorities are accused of focusing on “creative but unrealistic ideas” that ultimately fail and push prices even higher.

⚡ Unions are now demanding urgent action and a clear development plan for the energy sector. For now, they say, EAC remains stuck in political indecision.

👮‍♂️ Police chase with gunfire in Nicosia: suspect tried to escape and dumped cocaine during pursuit
Yesterday afternoon in Nicosia, traffic police stopped a 29-year-old driver for inspection. He refused to undergo a drug test, and officers discovered a quantity of cannabis in the glove compartment.

When police attempted to detain him, the man pushed officers and fled on foot, triggering a chase. During the pursuit, officers fired warning shots into the air.

While escaping, the suspect discarded several packages. After his arrest, police confirmed he had thrown away four packets of cocaine (around 30 grams total).

A search of the vehicle revealed five packets of cannabis (30 grams), five mobile phones, and €4,770 in cash.

The suspect is expected to appear in court today for a remand hearing. The investigation is being handled by ΥΚΑΝ.

🔊 Language gap on Cyprus: most non-Greek-speaking students still below basic integration level
A new report by the Centre for Educational Research and Evaluation reveals a growing challenge in Cyprus schools: thousands of primary students still struggle with Greek.

Nearly 3,000 pupils with non-Greek backgrounds were tested under the Ellinomatheia programme for the 2024–2025 school year. The results are striking — 91.6% started below B1 level, the minimum required to fully integrate into regular classes.

📊 After completing the programme:
48.9% reached B1 (+2.5%)
33.1% remained at A2
18% stayed at A1

Key trends:
• Girls perform better than boys
• Children with at least one Greek-speaking parent show higher progress
• Results improve with age and longer participation

Despite progress, the gap remains significant. Earlier cohorts showed better outcomes — 72.7% reached B1, compared to just 44.1% among recent entrants.
Experts now question whether migration trends or education quality are driving the decline.

🌉 Hidden gem in Cyprus: a medieval bridge almost no one knows about
Tucked away near the village of Lagoudera lies one of the island’s most underrated spots — the historic Xyliatos bridge. The vibe feels frozen in time: ancient stone, dense forest, and абсолютная тишина вокруг.

What makes it even more interesting — it’s easy to reach, yet still far from массового туризма. No crowds, no noise — just чистая атмосфера старого Кипра.

🌿 There’s also a local legend. People say the bridge was built overnight by unseen hands to help villagers cross the river during a harsh winter. Some believe it was the work of spirits protecting the mountain paths.

If you’re looking to discover a different side of Cyprus — authentic, quiet, and untouched — this place is worth adding to your list.
