🐱Microchips and Bans: What’s Changing for Dogs and Cats
Antonia Theodosiou, Commissioner for Environment and Animal Welfare, told Alpha Καλημέρα about EU plans to strengthen pet welfare and traceability. Two laws affect Cyprus: a welfare regulation applied by Veterinary Services and a Dogs Law for local authorities. New rules create a single EU framework for identification; cat marking will be mandatory. National registries must feed a European registry. Breeding bans will cover first‑ and second‑degree crosses and matings between unknown animals and pets. Regulation expected end of February; member states to set penalties.

🥐14-year legal battle over bread food poisoning in Nicosia
Court of Appeal issues two rulings. Consumer said he was poisoned after eating village bread bought 8 June 2011, went to a private hospital and handed remaining bread to Health Services; State Chemist found extensive bacterial spoilage. Bakery's appeal 93/2019 dismissed, trial judge's witness credibility and causation upheld; original compensation confirmed and €2,400 additional costs awarded. Appeal E45/2020 partly allowed: 2017 legal-fee rules were misapplied and the costs schedule is sent back for reassessment. Net result: consumer's claim upheld, costs list reopened.

💶Greek farmers block highways over delayed subsidies
More than 2,500 tractors sealed major highways, e.g. Nikaia on Athens–Thessaloniki and the E‑65 near Karditsa. Protest over delayed EU subsidies may last into January. Government paid €363m this year (€476m last); about €280m reached farmers after insurance deductions. Some 139,000 producers unpaid due to frozen tax IDs, cadastral or pasture records. Clashes with police using chemicals and stun grenades injured several; three arrests. Protest crosses party lines; farmers demand systemic fixes, not one‑off payouts. Authorities asked to prioritise dialogue.
