1974 — During the Turkish invasion of Assia about 15 villagers hid in a relative’s house. Angela Kambouri, 19 at the time, recalls that the slightest noise could expose them. The family parrot Kokos, known to mimic voices, stayed mysteriously silent and thus averted detection.
