🪧Standoff over universal cost-of-living pay in Cyprus
Government pushes to make the Automatic Cost of Living Allowance universal with a sliding scale boosting low‑ and middle‑income pay. Unions welcome broader coverage but reject graduated rates, say it weakens equal protection and warn of strike escalation if bill proceeds without social dialogue.

Employer groups say universal ATA will raise labour costs, fuel inflation and hurt competitiveness, and refuse talks while the proposal stands. Move fulfils president’s pre‑election pledge and pits unions against employers.

Labor minister has not bridged the gap. New comprehensive ATA deal expected by January 2026; months of uncertainty ahead.
