๐Ÿ“ทUN Swedish '74 witness: Turkish soldiers executed children saying they'd become soldiers
Famagusta, Sept 1974 โ€” Jan Eklinder, 29, Swedish UN guard, writes of atrocities after the Attila offensive.
Reports rapes of underage girls and executions by both sides; says 14 people were shot in an orange grove, among them toddlers told they would be killed because they'd grow up to be soldiers.

UN teams exhausted collecting bodies; found blood, stench and possible mass graves. Describes Greek reprisals in villages. Remaining Swedish unit cramped and tense.

Notes pragmatic contacts with Turkish patrols to address starving dogs and cats; they trapped and euthanized many animals. Ends urging family not to worry.

๐Ÿ›๏ธCrete: Mafia ring, archimandrite, compromising video and relics from Cypriot abbot
Preโ€‘trial files expose a wide criminal organisation active in Chania and Rethymno โ€” drugs, arms, extortion, violent acts and money laundering.

A separate indictment concerns exploitation of monastic property; six people charged. Two members of the main group extorted monasteries and influenced clerical appointments. Land sold to foreign investors was also targeted. An archimandrite was blackmailed with a compromising video, then allegedly recruited and linked to the ordering of a beating.

Wiretaps show members asked him to bring holy relics for a profitable procession; he replied they were genuine, brought
from an abbot in
Cyprus. Case now before justice.

๐Ÿ“ธAttila 1974 Through Hexagon Satellite โ€” Revealing Images
Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 monitored by NATO and US intelligence. Filmโ€‘based satellites HEXAGON and GAMBIT offered high resolution but required film recovery, delaying images by days or weeks.

Satellites recorded landings at Kyrenia, fighting at Nicosia airport and damaged Cyprus Airways planes, yet images became available after operations ended. US paralysis during Watergate and Nixon's resignation let Turkey impose a fait accompli, shocking Western capitals and straining US ties with Greece and Turkey.

Declassified frames remind that the Eastern Mediterranean remains geopolitically volatile; selected images show ships offshore, troop landings, runway craters and a burning Trident on July 20โ€“24, 1974.

โ„๏ธHow Kleanthis Nikolaidis Reads the Minallagia โ€” What Winter to Expect
Former Director of the Meteorological Service Kleanthis Nikolaidis spoke on the minallagia on Alpha Kalimera.

He described them as folk philosophy and cultural heritage worth recording, but not scientific knowledge. Meteorological Department data show no correlation between those traditional forecasts and actual weather. Scientific forecasts come from climate prediction centers and mediumโ€‘range models updated every 15โ€“20 days for horizons up to seven months.

Available data indicate next winter near the average of the past threeโ€“four winters, with rainfall below normal and a warming trend due to climate change.

๐Ÿ›๏ธMinistry Rebukes Western Limassol School Board Over Work Suspension
Ministry of Education expresses strong disappointment over School Board's suspension of works affecting 25 schools and risking the start of the term.

Budget for Western Limassol rose 14%; maintenance funds nearly doubled from โ‚ฌ132,000 to โ‚ฌ250,000. Ministry says Board acted coercively and that understaffing claims are unfounded: five caretakers were allocated and staffed until 30.8.2025; after one resignation the Ministry promptly arranged extra caretaker hours and notified the Board on 1.9.2025.

Safety allegations lack expert studies. Boards may carry out safety works under existing laws and circulars without prior Ministry approval. Ministry demands immediate withdrawal of the suspension and calls for urgent dialogue to resolve issues in students' interest.

Washington can supply arms to Cyprus under supervision: Cyprus will hold authorization and maintenance responsibility, while the US will periodically inspect and assess use. Needs are prioritised but the process is at an early stage; no timetable yet.

๐Ÿ”ŒContested electrical textbook for Technical Schools questioned
President of the Licensed Electrical Contractors Association Giorgos Kyriakou sent a letter to directors of the Department of Electromechanical Services and the Electricity Authority of Cyprus over a 2022 book titled "Electrical Installations".

He told Alpha Good Morning the textbook is based almost exclusively on Greek and EU laws and standards that do not apply in Cyprus, so it confuses students and does not prepare them for local exams.

Kyriakou says the content clashes with Cypriot legal and technical rules and, if applied, may lead to installations being refused connection and endanger property and lives.
He also flagged a page thanking the EAC and EMS for reviewing the text and asks whether they reviewed the whole book and which suggestions were adopted.

๐Ÿ“„Harassment scandal at pedagogical academy in occupied areas
- KTร–S general secretary Burak Mavis blames "Minister of Education" Nazim Cavusoglu with political responsibility over sexual harassment allegations at the Atatรผrk Pedagogical Academy.

- Mavis says claims that students were harassed in exchange for exam questions exceed an individual crime and indicate institutional decay, deeply damaging public education's standing in the occupied areas.
- He denounces repeated political interference that hurt the academy's autonomy and urges Cavusoglu to clarify and reassure the public, warning he will carry political responsibility otherwise.

- Reports say a student and others filed formal complaints alleging a professor offered exam questions for sexual favors; the minister allegedly pressured the administration and the professor received only a reprimand.

๐Ÿฅ— Restaurants Given Freedom โ€” But Under Stricter Rules: New Law Simplifies Business Operations and Tightens Control
On September 3, the Council of Ministers approved a new law that radically changes the rules for restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues in Cyprus. The reform aims to eliminate bureaucratic barriers that hindered the development of the food service industry and replace outdated regulations that no longer match modern realities.

The law, developed by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, is designed to support businesses, improve service quality, and create a more flexible and transparent regulatory system.

Key changes include:
โ€ข No more categorization โ€” venues will no longer be classified based on services provided or menu type.
โ€ข Simplified opening process โ€” the mandatory architectural review by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism is abolished; projects can now go directly to the Department of Town Planning.
โ€ข Outdated requirements removed โ€” licenses will no longer depend on kitchen size or other outdated criteria.
โ€ข Free pricing โ€” businesses are no longer required to have their price lists approved by state authorities.
โ€ข Stricter inspections โ€” repeat violations will allow authorities to quickly impose fines or close a venue.

Officials emphasize that this law gives entrepreneurs more freedom, while at the same time strengthening oversight to protect customers and raise service standards.
