🔥"I was about to knock, I escaped": Mr. Leonidas saved by a phone call from the deadly fire
Malia, Limassol — A call from the neighbouring village warned Mr. Leonidas that fire had reached Malia; he noticed the wooden veranda alight and left at the last moment. His house burned to ashes. Neighbours had even reported him missing, possibly to prompt helicopters; aircraft did arrive. His family feared the worst; his son drove from Paphos in 32 minutes. Mr. Leonidas waited for his dog, only leaving after villagers urged him to move. He and his wife slept one night at their son's home, then sought temporary shelter. Photos, books and heirlooms lost; he wept when he saw the ruins.

⏳The "Relay of Death" at the Liopetri Barn
1 Sept 1958. British military units arrive in Liopetri to hunt Andreas Karyos, Fotis Pitta, Christos Samaras and Ilias Papakyriakou, in the village to train EOKA members.

Exhaustive searches follow and house confinement orders are imposed. The four hide in Panagiotis Kallis’s barn. Kallis sprinkles pepper on the hay to confuse tracking dogs. Dawn 2 Sept. British return, surround the barn and demand Kallis show the fighters. A fierce firefight breaks out. Reinforcements arrive. Grenades thrown. Two fighters exit firing. Soldiers breach the roof and pour petrol inside.

Automatic weapons, grenades and bombs from a British helicopter set the barn ablaze. The remaining two emerge firing and fall beside the others. All four lie barefoot, having made no attempt to flee because escape was impossible.

📝Occupied areas: Chlorine leak at power station – Three hospitalized
Chlorine gas leaked during destruction works at a power station in occupied Kyrenia. Three people were taken to hospital with nausea and discomfort. Environmental and civil defence teams responded and workers are being evacuated from the site.

The incident comes amid a dispute after authorities banned for 60 days a strike announced by El‑Sen, which had warned of underinvestment and serious safety risks. Union leaders said the ban does not fix problems. El‑Sen president Ahmet Tugcu blamed mismanagement and reported transfers of two employees for sharing information. Other union chiefs called the ban unconstitutional and criticised the authorities.

😱Still Has Fears, Wakes at Night.. Complete Indifference from the Authorities
Mother of an infant allegedly abused in a kindergarten told a TV show authorities stalled despite a forensic report by Dr. Matsakis saying injuries are inconsistent with a simple fall.

The child wakes at night screaming, cannot yet speak; public psychological support failed. Police said forensic exams are done only for sexual cases or deceased, so parents paid privately. Police sent the file to the Attorney General, who charged the director with negligence, not bodily harm; negligence carries about €500. Family sent repeated letters since April seeking review; no replies.

Kindergarten appears open and the director may still work there. Mother accuses all state bodies, including the Children's Commissioner, of complete indifference and says she is deeply disappointed.

🌳Environmental groups urge transparency over deadly Limassol fires
Environmental Federation of Cyprus regrets handling of recent parliamentary session on Limassol inferno. Expected clear answers did not materialize. State agencies gave insufficient information.

Lengthy off‑topic debate blocked in‑depth probe and prevented environmental groups from presenting evidence‑based proposals. Federation calls on Parliament and Government to ensure transparency and accountability for causes and responsibilities, to formalize NGO participation in decision making, and to adopt prevention and crisis‑management policies based on science and international best practice. Next session must let all stakeholders speak.

🇪🇺Kallas: Turkey‑Libya memorandum violates EU members' rights
Kaja Kallas, EU Vice‑President and High Representative, issues a statement on the Turkey‑Libya maritime memorandum. The EU seeks a stable, secure Eastern Mediterranean and expects all states to respect the sovereignty and sovereign rights of member states under international law, including UNCLOS.

Unilateral acts that contradict EU interests and international law must be avoided. The European Council in June 2025 said the memorandum breaches third states' sovereign rights, is inconsistent with customary law of the sea and cannot produce legal effects for third states.

The EU calls for peaceful settlement of maritime disputes by negotiation and good faith.

🏛Supreme Court rejects judge's objection to transfer
Supreme Constitutional Judicial Council dismissed Judge Fofi Konstantinou’s challenge to her transfer from Nicosia Family Court to Larnaca‑Famagusta Family Court from 10 Sept 2025 for service needs. Maria‑Christina G. Kaiser was moved to cover the post and appeared in the proceedings.

No costs were ordered after Kaiser, via counsel, waived them. The council found the secretary's note and minutes justified the decision: long tenure at one court may affect perceived impartiality in Cyprus’s small community; transfers secure equal treatment and court efficiency. Family hardship claims were not substantiated at decision time.

7️⃣Mafia, Money-Laundering and Organised Crime: Shadow Economy of the Breakaway State
Financial Times flags casinos as a hub for illicit cash and illegal activity in the breakaway state. Report says 32 casinos operate now; authorities push to expand to about 64 by allowing banks to accept foreign currencies, easing gambling flows.

Report describes a landscape of mafia-style networks, organised crime and powerful night-time operators operating with little oversight. Local economists warn the sector has morphed into a self-sustaining illicit economy, difficult to control. Authorities face pressure over regulatory gaps and rapid expansion.**

🏫Ideal school snacks for children — what parents should know
Safe2Eat-2025 campaign issues brief ahead of new school year. Teach children to wash hands before and after eating. Use hand sanitizer if no soap and water. Cook foods well, especially meat, poultry and eggs. Avoid perishable items left unrefrigerated (dairy, cold cuts, mayonnaise).

Pack lunches in insulated bags with ice packs; if not practical, encourage eating perishable foods early, especially in hot weather. Prefer dry snacks: bagels, breadsticks, permitted nuts, washed fruit in containers. Check “use by” dates. Tell children not to share food or drinks and to avoid items that smell or look off. Parents should review canteen options and favor simple, safe choices.
