๐Ÿ”Š The President of Cyprus will receive a preliminary report on the causes of the catastrophic fires that destroyed over 100,000 acres and caused more than $100 million in damage โ€” details from the U.S. on August 18.
On August 13, 2025, it was announced that Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides will soon receive a preliminary report from a team of experts from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), who are investigating the causes of the devastating fires in rural Limassol.

These fires, which destroyed more than 100,000 acres of land and damaged residential buildings, had tragic consequences, including the deaths of two people and damages estimated at more than $100 million USD.

The main suspected cause of the incident is arson. ATF experts are focusing on analyzing safety factors and circumstances that contributed to the scale of the disaster.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ปIT Business: Cyprus or Dubai in 2025? Where You Won't End Up Broke
Your IT project has grown, money is flowing, and then he appears โ€” the tax inspector. Where to move to pay less and not go bankrupt? In 2025, two top options โ€” Cyprus and Dubai. Let's break it down simply.
โ–ช๏ธThe Myth of a "Tax Haven":
Dubai: Yes, there used to be zero taxes here. BUT since 2023, a 9% corporate tax was introduced on profits over $102,000. Zero remains only for "qualified income" in special zones (Free Zones).

Sold software to a company outside your zone? You might pay 9%. The rules are new, unclear โ€” like raw code in production.
Cyprus: The rate here is 12.5% โ€” one of the lowest in the EU. But everything is predictable: English law, clear rules, no confusion with "zones".

โ–ช๏ธMagic IT Tax Benefit: How to Get It?
Cyprus (IP Box): You can reduce tax on software/patent profits to 2.5%. How? 80% of this profit is tax-exempt, the remaining 20% taxed at 12.5%. Result: 2.5%. BUT! The main condition is "Substance" (real presence):
A real office (not a mailbox).
Real IT staff (not a secretary or cleaner).
Key decisions made in Cyprus by a director who lives there.
Without this โ€” no 2.5%, only 12.5% or fines.
Dubai: No separate benefit. Zero possible in special zones, but also with conditions ("Nexus Approach"):
Prove the software was really developed in the UAE.
Your development expenses must be there.
Bought development in India? Income from it taxed at 9%.
The list of "preferential" intellectual property is already smaller than in Cyprus.

โ–ช๏ธWhere to Live and Work? Let's Count the Money:
Dubai โ€” VERY expensive:
Office rent: expensive.
Annual licenses (like OKVED but paid): expensive.

Visas for employees: expensive.
Senior salary: $5k+ (to rent an apartment for $2-3k/month + insurance + living expenses).

Summer +50ยฐC โ€” you can only live in air conditioning.

Cyprus โ€” moderate prices (for the EU):
Office rent in Limassol: reasonable.
IT salaries: high but not astronomical.

Life: sea, sun (+35ยฐC in summer โ€” bearable), reasonable food and cafe prices.

European quality of life.

โ–ช๏ธBanks: Will They Open an Account?
๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡พCyprus: Banks are cautious (especially with Russians), but for real, "white" business with documents, they will open an account. It will be a normal European account (SEPA).

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ชDubai: Banks tightened rules after the UAE was put on the FATF "grey list." Opening a company account with "Russian roots" is a lottery. Checks take months, and they may refuse without explanation.
โ–ช๏ธSummary 2025: No Free Lunch!
Dubai: May suit if:
You have a large budget and don't mind expensive living.
You are ready for uncertainty with new tax rules.

Your income is definitely "qualified" for the special zone.
You are not afraid of the banking lottery and the heat.
Cyprus: Often more profitable and reliable if:

You need predictability and stability (EU, English law).
You are ready to create a real office and team on the island (Substance).
You want to use the IP Box (2.5%).
You seek a balance of cost and quality of life.

You work for Western markets.

โ—๏ธDon't fall for "zero taxes"! In 2025, both Cyprus and Dubai require real business on their territory. A "mailbox" won't work. Choose wisely, counting all risks and expenses to definitely not end up broke.

๐Ÿ”Š The problem with garbage removal complicates beach relaxation and local businesses' work in the Perevolya area
Since the beginning of the week, there has been a serious problem with garbage removal in the Perevolya area. Containers are overflowing, and the smell coming from them is becoming increasingly unbearable. This situation is especially acute on the beach, where residents and tourists come to relax.

Local entrepreneurs express concern as the unpleasant odor even penetrates inside shops, creating discomfort for customers. Business owners hope for prompt intervention by the relevant services to resolve this issue.

"We hope the situation will be corrected soon to ensure comfort for both visitors and local residents," say representatives of the retail outlets.

The situation requires immediate attention to restore order and comfort in the public places of the Perevolya area.

๐Ÿ”Š Forecasts surpassed: Northern Cyprus reached the water consumption level of 2043 already in 2024
Water consumption in Northern Cyprus reached 44 million cubic meters in 2024, which is two decades ahead of forecasts.

The main growth factors are unaccounted population influx and the use of resources from Turkey. In 2025, water consumption continues to rise, especially in Nicosia and Trikomo.

Local authorities plan measures for conservation and infrastructure improvement, but there remains a high dependence on Turkish water supplies, creating risks of water shortages in the future due to possible droughts in Turkey.

๐Ÿ™ The Memory of Tasos Isaac and Solomos Solomou: Symbols of the Struggle for Cyprus' Freedom

๐Ÿฆธ๐Ÿป Tasos Isaac (1972 โ€“ August 11, 1996)
A young man who challenged injustice and fell victim to brutality in the UN buffer zone near Deryneia. Decades later, his image reminds us that freedom and justice require constant protection.
๐Ÿ”Ž Origins of the Tragedy:
In August 1996, the Cyprus Motorcyclists Federation initiated an international motorcycle rally from Berlin (a symbol of overcoming division) to occupied Kyrenia.

The goal was to call for the removal of the last "wall" in Europe โ€“ the dividing line in Nicosia, under the slogan "Liberation is the only solution".

A column of thousands of bikers (including 7,000 Cypriots and participants from Europe, South Africa, and the USA) was met with threats from Turkish authorities, who deployed about 2,500 militants of the far-right "Grey Wolves" group to the northern part of the island.
๐Ÿ’”The Death of Tasos Isaac:
Despite the official rally being canceled by the Republic of Cyprus authorities due to threats, a group of protesters, including 24-year-old Tasos Isaac, entered the UN neutral zone near Deryneia on August 11.

There they encountered armed Turkish forces and the "Grey Wolves". Tasos' attempt to help a beaten compatriot ended in tragedy: the crowd attacked him, stoning him in front of helpless peacekeepers. His body was taken to Paralimni hospital.

Tasos left behind a pregnant wife โ€“ their daughter Anastasia, baptized by the Greek government, was born a month later.
๐Ÿ’” The Heroism and Death of Solomos Solomou:
On August 14, 1996, the day of Tasos' funeral (which coincided with the anniversary of the occupation of Famagusta), his 26-year-old cousin Solomos Solomou vowed revenge.

During the laying of wreaths at the place of Tasos' death in the buffer zone, provoked by Turkish Cypriots, Solomos, in a fit of rage, rushed to the Turkish post shouting "I will take down this flag!".

Climbing the flagpole despite warning shouts, he was shot. Gunfire continued, injuring dozens of protesters and peacekeepers. Solomos' death, captured by journalists, shocked the world. His funeral on August 16 was held in national mourning.
๐Ÿ™ Consequences and Memory:
International resonance: Visits by Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis and the scandalous speech of Turkish Foreign Minister Tansu ร‡iller (who threatened to "break the hands" of flag desecrators).

Cultural heritage: Solomos' heroism inspired famous Greek musicians (Rokkos, Mitropanos, Alexiou, Sfakianakis) to create songs that became anthems of the struggle. Photos of Solomos on the flagpole became a symbol of resistance to occupation.

Justice: Despite identifying the culprits (including the leader of the "Grey Wolves" Mehmet Arslan and former officer Kenan Akin) and international warrants, no one was punished. Only in 2008 did the European Court of Human Rights find Turkey guilty of violating the right to life (Article 2 of the ECHR) due to lack of investigation and ordered compensation to the families.

National heroes: Tasos Isaac and Solomos Solomou are revered in Cyprus and Greece as martyrs of freedom. Their memory, alive in the hearts of Cypriots, remains a source of hope for the island's reunification.

๐Ÿช– Egypt and Saudi Arabia condemn Netanyahu's statements about the "Greater Israel" and warn of regional destabilization
On August 14, 2025, Cairo and Riyadh strongly opposed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's statements about the concept of "Greater Israel".

Both countries expressed concerns that such statements could lead to further instability in the Middle East.

Egypt called for the resumption of peace talks and the establishment of a Palestinian state, while Saudi Arabia rejected any plans to expand Israeli settlements and reaffirmed the Palestinians' right to independence.

โšก Cyprus is facing power outages due to heat and problems at power plants: temporary interruptions are possible this evening.
Why: Very hot weather leads to record electricity consumption (mainly air conditioners). At the same time, solar power generation drops in the evening. Technical problems at power plants are added (breakdowns at 4 units in Vasiliko and Dekelia).
When: The risk of outages is high today (14.08.2025) from 18:30 to 22:00. Outages already occurred yesterday (from 18:20 to ~20:00).
How: If outages are needed for system safety, they will be brief (up to 30 minutes per group) and rotational (alternating in different areas). Consumers are divided into groups (yesterday groups 6-11 were disconnected, the day before groups 1-5).

Warning: The network operator (DSMK) acknowledges that it is difficult to warn people in advance, as the need for outages often arises suddenly.

But today they will try to announce which areas belong to which groups.
Outlook: The only quick solution to the problem is expected next summer, when DSMK plans to commission energy storage systems.

Summary: Cyprus has again faced a shortage of electricity due to extreme heat and technical failures. Brief power outages in different areas in turn are possible this evening. Advance warning is difficult. The hope is for new energy storage systems next year.

This is done to protect workers from heat stress during extreme heat conditions. Employers must measure temperature and humidity, provide breaks, and offer cool drinks. It is recommended to avoid heavy work during the hottest hours of the day.

๐Ÿ”Š A man hugs a sheep on his motorcycle to save it from the raging fire in Greece.
๐Ÿš’ The fires that engulfed Zakynthos are now subsiding, with firefighting forces remaining on site to extinguish isolated hotspots and prevent any flare-ups.

๐Ÿ”ฅ On Chios, the fire has been raging for the third day. Strong winds are easing, and aerial support is increasing, giving ground operations a much-needed break in Kipouries, Fyta, and Kambia.

โ—๏ธ All firefighting forces on the island, reinforced by crews from Mytilene and Athens, as well as volunteers and local residents, continue to battle the blaze. Meanwhile, HEDNO specialists are working to restore power in dozens of villages where more than 150 utility poles have been damaged. The work is expected to last at least a week.

๐Ÿ”Š** Power outages halted patient examinations.
**๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ Medical centers cannot guarantee the safety of examinations during sudden power cuts.
On the evening of August 13, rolling blackouts paralyzed the work of Cyprus diagnostic centers. CT, MRI, and X-ray machines shut down in the middle of procedures.

Why this is dangerous:
โ€ข Patients at risk: Children, the elderly, and people with chronic illnesses were particularly affected.
โ€ข Interrupted procedures: If an examination was interrupted, some patients had to retake medications, which can be harmful.
โ€ข No backup power: Unlike hospitals, centers do not have emergency generators.

Result:
Centers โ€” which make up 75% of all in the country โ€” can no longer schedule appointments reliably. It is impossible to guarantee examination safety during sudden power outages.

Limassol police arrested a 45-year-old man after a chase on August 12, during which 9 kg of cocaine, valued at more than โ‚ฌ1 million, were confiscated.

Part of the drugs was found in the suspectโ€™s backpack, while the main batch (8 kg) was discovered in his brotherโ€™s car โ€” the brother is currently serving a prison sentence โ€” and the vehicle was being used as a hidden stash in a garage.

Investigators believe the detained man may be linked to a major drug trafficking network, but the court has so far refused to authorize a search of his home.
