🌊 Problem with seaweed on the beaches of Ayia Napa
Residents and tourists of Ayia Napa have been reporting for about one and a half months about the greening of coastal waters and abundant accumulation of seaweed. This is related to the annual summer bloom of microalgae (July-August), which is triggered by warm sea water and a nutrient-rich environment.

The phenomenon is most noticeable on Nissi Beach. In other popular places β€” Makronissos, Landa, Pantachou, Vathia Gonia, Ayia Thekla β€” the water usually remains cleaner thanks to natural currents that carry seaweed away from the shore.

According to the municipality, final works on the site are planned to be completed in September. The new parking lot and recreation area are intended to increase the comfort and accessibility of the beach for visitors.

πŸ”Š** Shocking leak: personal data of thousands of Cypriots exposed! Who is behind it?
**On August 14, 2025, serious breaches were reported in the data protection systems of two Cypriot organizations, leading to the publication of personal information of tens of thousands of citizens.

As journalist Andreas Pafitis reported on RIK, one of the entities has been unable to fix a critical vulnerability on its website for ten months, which allows access to the internal network and personal data. Despite involving specialists in June and subsequent checks (including in July), the problem remains unresolved, and only now have new protection measures begun to be implemented.

Simultaneously, an incident was identified in another organization where, through a simple open search, birth dates, passport numbers, and ID card numbers of thousands of people, including politicians and public figures, are found. The vulnerability was discovered on May 8, the Digital Security Authority issued recommendations and notified the Data Protection Commissioner, but the information has not yet been removed.

The Commissioner for Communications and head of the Digital Security Agency, George Michailidis, confirmed the leaks, noting that work is ongoing with both organizations to bring systems into compliance with security requirements, which is planned to be completed in the coming days.

πŸ”Š** Cyprus entered the top three EU leaders in online advertising usage by companies in 2024
**β–ͺ️According to Eurostat statistics for 2024, almost half (49.4%) of Cypriot businesses invested in internet advertising. This figure placed Cyprus third among 20 EU countries for which data is available, behind only Malta (60.4%) and Finland (49.8%). For comparison, in Romania, Poland, and Portugal, the share of such companies did not reach 25%.
**
Popular targeting methods in the EU:
Contextual advertising (keywords/views): **Leads with a share of 76.8% among advertisers.

Geolocation targeting (44.3%): Displaying ads based on the user's location, often combined with other methods.

Behavioral targeting (41.6%): Using the user's action history (e.g., via cookies) to personalize ads.

Other targeting methods: Used by 45.3% of companies.

β–ͺ️In Cyprus, the share of online advertisers increased by several percentage points compared to 2023. The most active sectors are tourism, retail, finance, and education. Experts estimate that on average Cypriot companies spend about 40% of their marketing budget on digital advertising, preferring Google Ads, social networks (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok), YouTube, and banner networks.

β–ͺ️It is expected that in 2025-2026, the reach of online advertising in Cyprus will continue to grow due to the development of e-commerce, high competition in tourism, and the overall redistribution of marketing expenses to the digital sphere.

πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ΊThe European Commission invites Cyprus business to dialogue on new rules for foreign subsidies
The Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Keve) calls on local companies to participate in public consultations by the European Commission. The discussion concerns draft guidelines for the Regulation on *foreign subsidies* – financial aid, benefits, or other advantages provided to companies by non-European states.

As Keve explains, the goal of the rules is to ensure a level playing field in the EU single market. They will affect all recipients of non-European funding: from grants and tax benefits to preferential loans.
**
Examples of Regulation enforcement (EU investigations):
CRRC (China): **Withdrew application for a Bulgarian contract ($665 million) due to suspicions of state support.

e& (UAE): Investigation of the purchase of PPF assets in Europe due to state guarantees and preferential financing.

Chinese solar panel manufacturers: Investigation in Romania due to suspicions of subsidies giving a price advantage.

BYD, Geely, SAIC (China): Increased tariffs in the EU after checking their state financing.
**
Essence of the draft guidelines:
**The document details how the European Commission will assess whether a foreign subsidy distorts competition in mergers, public procurement, or other operations. Importantly, in certain cases companies must notify the Commission *even about subsidies below standard threshold values*.
**
Participation:
Consultations are open to all interested parties until September 11, 2025.** Comments should be sent to the following email addresses:

πŸ™ August 15 in Cyprus: The Feast of the Theotokos and mourning for lost Famagusta
August 15 marks the main Orthodox holiday of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, which in Cyprus is called the "Summer Easter." This day is also filled with sadness and memories of a national tragedy.

On this holiday, believers go to monasteries and churches dedicated to the Mother of God throughout the island. Tourists fill the mountain and coastal resorts, while Nicosia sinks into unusual silence: the streets empty, and many establishments close.

Nevertheless, the joy of the holiday is intertwined with the bitterness of memories.

Famagusta: The Day of the Fall
At dawn on August 14, 1974, during the second phase of the Turkish invasion, Famagusta was again bombed. Its residents were forced to leave their homes.

The morning of August 15, 1974. Turkish troops began the assault on the city. Separate groups of National Guard fighters showed fierce resistance, holding several positions until the last bullet. However, the forces were unequal, and by the end of the day, the defenders were forced to retreat.

On August 16, 1974, the Turkish army entered Famagusta. The city, once the pearl of the island, was left in ruins.

51 years of waiting and memory
The residents who escaped the advance scattered across Cyprus. Their only hope was a quick return home. 51 years have passed, but this hope has not been fulfilled.

Famagusta, especially its Varosha district, has become a symbol of the unresolved conflict. A Swedish journalist who visited the city in 1977 called it a "ghost town." However, former residents of Famagusta reject this definition. For them, it is not a ghost but the place of their birth, their capital, their home. As they say themselves: "Famagusta is not a ghost. Famagusta is a promise." The promise of return and restoration of justice continues to live in the hearts of the exiles.

πŸ”Š** Foul discovery in Paphos: pig's head disposed of in a vacant lot
**An unpleasant discovery awaited the residents of Paphos on August 14: a pig's head was thrown onto a vacant lot on Apostolos Andreas Street near houses.

The risk of infection spread due to abnormal heat and decomposition required an urgent call to the sanitary and epidemiological service. The Health Department promptly disposed of the remains.

If an investigation is underway, it is not publicized. The maximum penalty for possible offenders is a small fine for littering.
