๐Ÿ”Š Russia: WhatsApp and Telegram calls under threat of complete ban
Moscow, August 12, 2025. Users in Russia are widely reporting problems with voice and video calls in popular messengers WhatsApp and Telegram. Against this background, data has emerged about a possible final ban on the call function.
Chronicle of events
โ–ช๏ธConnection disruptions: Since August 11, mass failures have been recorded when making calls through both messengers, according to monitoring services data.

โ–ช๏ธTesting of blocks: According to Kommersant, telecom operators have begun selectively limiting call quality in these applications.

โ–ช๏ธOperators' interests: As early as May 2025, major telecom companies proposed restricting VoIP calls (Forbes). Reasons include high infrastructure costs and a desire to increase revenue from traditional telephony.

โ–ช๏ธRegulator's position: Roskomnadzor (RKN) already made a similar proposal in October 2024 to limit calls in foreign services.
Latest data
The Ostorozhno Media project, citing sources, claims that the decision to completely ban calls in WhatsApp and Telegram has already been made. According to their data, the initiative is agreed at a high level and justified by the need to combat terrorism. Final approvals may be completed today, August 12. Text messaging in messengers, according to the leak, will remain.

๐Ÿ”Š Cyprus wants to reserve tourists' money for car rental in case of fines.
The authorities of Cyprus are developing a measure that will allow temporarily blocking funds in the accounts of tourists renting cars. The goal is to guarantee the payment of fines for traffic violations.

The essence of the proposal:
โ€ข The police will be able to freeze a certain amount in the bank accounts of drivers operating cars with "red plates" (category Z โ€“ rental cars).

โ€ข This should prevent situations where tourists leave the island without paying for violations.

Position of rental companies:
โ€ข Representatives of the rental industry oppose this initiative.

โ€ข They believe that freezing funds will hit the budget of vacationers and make them spend less on the island.

Alternative solution from the association:

โ€ข The car rental association proposes other methods of collecting fines:

1. Collection at the border: Payment of fines when passing passport control before departure.

2. Obligation of rental companies: Either to provide accurate data of offenders to the authorities or to pay the fines themselves.

๐Ÿ”Š Koop bank employees in Northern Cyprus storm the CEO's office: strike and demands for management resignation amid salary delays!
In Northern Cyprus, Koop bank employees awaiting their July salaries entered the company's main office in Nicosia on August 12. According to local media, they tried to get into the office of CEO Kemal Ataman, but he quickly left it. The strikers demanded the resignation of the bank's management.

Later, Kemal Ataman commented to journalists: "I called the police because they broke into my office, broke the door, and damaged the ceiling. No one has the right to cause disorder. As for the July salary, it will be paid on Wednesday, August 13. I have worked for several weeks to minimize delays."

Koop bank is one of the largest employers in the unrecognized "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" and controls companies such as the insurance company Seker Insurance, the dairy Koop Sut, and the animal feed factory Binboga.

The promise by Kemal Ataman to pay salaries on August 13 was supported by the TRNC Deputy Prime Minister Fikri Ataoglu. However, many bank employees do not trust the officials' words and remain firm in their opinion.

The head of the Koop-Sen union, Mehmetali Gyuroz, stated that he was not invited to negotiations on this issue. He added that bank employees will continue the strike and hold a protest near the office of Prime Minister รœnal รœstel on August 13. Their main demands are the cancellation of austerity measures introduced by the government for Koop employees.

These austerity measures include eight points: dismissal of retirees who continue to work, cancellation of the 13th salary (annual bonus), cancellation of the special allowance compensating for price increases (CoLA), as well as halving holiday bonuses for Islamic holidays.

๐Ÿ”Š Drop in checkpoint crossings after the arrest of Greek Cypriots in Northern Cyprus
After the arrest of five Greek Cypriots in the "TRNC," checkpoint crossings sharply decreased.

In July, before the arrests, about 85,000 people crossed daily, but afterwards only 69,000. The President of Cyprus, N. Christodoulides, warned of travel risks to the North, causing concern among property owners. Crossings in the opposite direction also fell from 111,000 to 76,000.

The trial for the arrested individuals is scheduled for August 14, with charges of illegal entry and espionage. Two of them had their detention extended for 3 months.
