โ— Attention: Protection of bird nests at the Salt Lake!
The Department of Ecology draws your attention to the importance of preserving the unique ecosystem of the Salt Lake in Larnaca.

We urge all visitors to follow these recommendations:
1. Access prohibited:
Access for vehicles and pedestrians to the shores of the Salt Lake is strictly prohibited year-round, especially during the dry season. This is necessary to protect nesting birds.
2. Protect nature:
โ€ข Birds lay eggs directly on the lakebed, and chicks may hide in the soil. Any interference, whether a tire track or a footstep, can lead to the death of the brood.

โ€ข People can scare microscopic crustaceans โ€” the main food for flamingos. These crustaceans go into hibernation waiting for rain, and our presence can disrupt their life cycle.
3. How to observe nature without harm:
โ€ข Use birdwatching towers and special observation platforms.

โ€ข Follow marked walking trails.

Remember, the Salt Lake is not only a picturesque place but also an important refuge for migratory birds, including pink flamingos. Your care for nature will help preserve the lives of these amazing creatures!
๐Ÿ™ Thank you for your understanding and support!

๐Ÿ”Ž Forgotten Conquerors: Why Do the Streets of Cyprus Bear the Names of Turkish Pashas?
A historical paradox: the island honors military leaders who destroyed its independence in the 16th century.
๐ŸฉธThe Bloody Trail of 1570
In 1570, Cyprus belonged to Venice.

But the Ottoman Empire, eager to control the Mediterranean, sent a fleet commanded by two legendary generals: Lala Mustafa Pasha and Piyale Mehmed Pasha. Within a year, they turned the flourishing island into an Ottoman province.

Today, streets in Larnaca and Famagusta bear their names โ€” a historical irony that few reflect upon.
๐Ÿ—กLala Mustafa Pasha (1500โ€“1580): The "Tutor" with a Sword
โ–ช
His nickname "Lala" ("tutor") referred to his service as a teacher of the sultan's heirs. But in Cyprus, he showed a different side:

โ€ข
๐Ÿฐ
September 1570: his troops stormed Nicosia after a 40-day siege. The city fell, 20,000 inhabitants were killed.

โ€ข
โš”
August 1571: after a 10-month siege, Famagusta surrendered. Commander Marcantonio Bragadin trusted promises of mercy...

โ€ข
๐Ÿ”ช
Betrayal: Mustafa Pasha ordered Bragadin's ears to be cut off, then had his skin flayed alive. 300 captured soldiers were executed.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท
Greek Cypriots remember him as the "Butcher of Famagusta." Yet the Cathedral of St. Nicholas there still bears his name!
๐Ÿ”Ž Piyale Mehmed Pasha (1515โ€“1578): Admiral from the Christians
His fate is a drama of the era:

๐Ÿ‘ถ Born into a Christian family in Hungary.

๐Ÿšท As a child, forcibly taken by the Turks (the devshirme system: the best boys were taken into slavery, converted to Islam, and raised to serve the sultan).

โš“
Became a terror of the seas: captured Chios, defeated the fleets of Spain and Venice.

๐Ÿดโ€โ˜
Key role in Cyprus: his fleet delivered troops to the island's shores. He captured Limassol and ensured reinforcements for the siege of Nicosia.
๐Ÿ“ Where to find their traces today?
1. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Lala Mustafa Pasha Street in Larnaca (Turkish quarter Skala): a quiet alley by the sea.

2.
โ›ช
Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Famagusta (now the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque).

3.
๐Ÿ˜
Piyale Pasha Street there as well: restored houses with bright facades.
๐Ÿค” Why does Cyprus keep these names?
๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท
The Turkish community sees the pashas as symbols of victory and glory of the Ottoman Empire.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท
Greek Cypriots perceive them as bloody conquerors โ€” but the streets remain due to the complex status of the island's north.

โ—
The forgotten truth: Piyale Pasha, a baptized Hungarian, became the executioner of Christians โ€” a victim of a system that turned him into a tool of conquest.
โณ History is not black and white. The streets of Cyprus are a layered pie of memory, pain, and reconciliation, still waiting to be understood.

๐Ÿ•บ Only in Cyprus can you witness unique moments when locals block the main city road to dance the traditional "Sirtaki" dance. At such times, they attract drivers stuck in traffic, pulling them out of their cars, and invite all passersby to join the dance. ๐Ÿ’ƒ

๐Ÿ“This time, the Zorbas dance was recorded in Larnaca on the Finikoudes promenade, right on the roadway. This phenomenon is quite common in Cyprus and can happen almost anywhere.

โค Cyprus is love for traditions.

๐Ÿ”Š "Blue Flag" Under Threat: Environmental Scandal in Cyprus โ€” "Greens" Accuse Cymepa of Concealing Beach Pollution!
The "Blue Flag" program, symbolizing the ecological quality of beaches, has become the center of a heated dispute. Local ecologists from the "Greens" party claim that flags continue to fly on polluted beaches, misleading tourists. In response to these accusations, the Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association (Cymepa) called them "false" and "filled with hatred."

Key points of the conflict:
โ€ข
Accusations
: Andreas Mavrikios, leader of the "Greens," asserts that beaches were not stripped of the "Blue Flag" after serious pollution incidents, including oil spills and warnings about microbial contamination.

โ€ข
Cymepa's Response
: Secretary General Michalis Ierides denied these accusations, stating that the incidents did not involve "Blue Flag" beaches, except for one case where the flag was immediately removed.

Program Situation
: Despite disagreements, this year the "Blue Flag" was awarded to 64 beaches and two marinas in Cyprus.

Discussion Question
: How important is transparency and prompt response by organizations responsible for environmental standards in maintaining public trust?

๐Ÿ”Š Heroes in the fight against fire: Firefighters and aviation against the blaze in the Talas โ€“ Saint Neophytos area (Paphos district)
While ground forces tirelessly battle the fire, striving to tame its fury, additional resources come to help, proving decisive in this fight. A vivid example of this is todayโ€™s situation in the Talas โ€“ Saint Neophytos area.

While firefighters on the ground were doing the impossible, the flames were threateningly approaching residential houses. At this critical moment, the pilot of a firefighting plane flew between buildings and, performing a preventive water drop, used the wind direction to create a safe perimeter around the houses to the south. In such situations, speed is crucial.

We admire your efforts! May your families be proud of you, as well as everyone working from the air and those who, risking their lives, hold the hose close to the fire.

๐Ÿ”Š Limassol fights chaos: rent debts and illegal occupations have reached 3 million euros
The new authorities of Limassol (Cyprus) have faced a serious problem: for many years, city premises and public spaces were used for free and without permits. Huge debts have accumulated โ€“ a total of 3 million euros.
๐Ÿ”Ž What is the problem?
1. Rent debts: About 2 million euros are overdue payments under official rental agreements for city premises.

2. Illegal occupation of territories: Another 1 million euros is debt from those who simply occupied public spaces (such as squares, sidewalks) for their cafes or shops without any contract. An inspection showed: out of 110 such "users," only half have contracts, and only a third of them pay.
โ” What is the city hall doing?
The Mayor of Limassol, Yiannis Armeftis, stated that this disorder is over. The city has created a special department to control public spaces and buildings.

Example: Heroes Square

This is a vivid example of the problem:

โ€ข Restaurants and shops have used the square for their needs for years (for example, placing tables) without permission and payment.

โ€ข Just since the pandemic, the debt to the city has exceeded 250,000 euros.

โ€ข To date, only one businessman has paid the debt (15,000 euros).

What will happen next at Heroes Square?

โ€ข The square has been renovated and a new usage plan has been developed for it.

โ€ข The city hall held meetings with businessmen and issued an ultimatum: everyone who wants to work on the square must sign contracts by the end of August 2025.

โ€ข Rent payments will start from January 1, 2026 (by that time the squareโ€™s plan will be fully approved).

โ€ข If contracts are not signed: The city will act strictly โ€“ equipment (tables, chairs, etc.) placed without permission may be confiscated from non-payers.

๐Ÿ”‡Fighting noise
The mayor emphasized: on renovated squares like Heroes Square, loud music through speakers is prohibited.

The goal is to make the city center comfortable for everyone: businesses, residents, and guests. "We want a lively but pleasant city to live in.

No one should create problems and discomfort, discouraging people from wanting to live here," Armeftis said.
โš” Dealing with old debts and illegal occupations
The city has gone on the offensive against those who have illegally occupied municipal lands without contracts for years. "For decades this went unchecked, territories were increasingly occupied, and entire illegal businesses appeared," the mayor explained.

โ€ข Some cases (especially concerning the "Acti Olympion" zone) are already in court.

โ€ข Other violations are in preparation for court.

Armeftis named the reason: previously, renting city property was often considered a given, without proper control and enforcement of conditions.

โ—Main message
"We have put an end to lawlessness! The municipality will not allow public money to be squandered.

We will defend our rights โ€“ both to receive rent payments and to control the use of city territories," the mayor said.

He emphasized that the goal of the new authorities is transparency, legality, and fairness for all residents of Limassol.

๐Ÿ”Š In Larnaca, penalties for water wastage are being tightened. Fines up to โ‚ฌ150.
The Larnaca District Local Authority has announced the implementation of the Water Conservation Law, which introduces stricter measures against offenders.

The out-of-court fine for wastage is increased from โ‚ฌ51 to โ‚ฌ85, and the payment period extended from 15 to 30 days. In case of repeated violations, the fine can reach โ‚ฌ150.

These changes are due to the ongoing drought and shortage of water resources in Cyprus.
