🔊 In Paphos, a Romanian woman was freed after being held and forced into prostitution. Two people have been arrested, and one is wanted.
Romanian authorities informed Cyprus about the possible detention of a 48-year-old woman in a Paphos hotel.
Police did not find her at the hotel but later spotted her at the airport, where she was calling for help.
The woman said she had been forced into prostitution. A 51-year-old companion and a 79-year-old alleged accomplice were arrested, while a 44-year-old man is wanted.
The case is under investigation, and the detainees will appear in court.

🇨🇾 The Republic of Cyprus is actively modernizing its defense in response to the Turkish threat, leveraging its geopolitical role. Key projects:
1. Paphos Air Base (“Andreas Papandreou”)
U.S. involvement: The United States is actively helping with modernization. American experts from Frankfurt have already visited the base twice for assessment and planning.
Plans: Extend the runway to accommodate more aircraft, build a large hangar, and establish a modern communications hub. The base will also be used for humanitarian and civilian purposes.
Conditions: The U.S. is providing financial and technical support, but the base remains fully under Cypriot ownership. Cyprus decides independently who can use it and when. This is agreed upon with Washington.
History: U.S. funding was agreed upon during President Biden’s term, when Christodoulides visited in 2024. Interest has continued even after Trump came to power.
2. Mari Naval Base
Modernization will begin in 2026; project documentation is ready.
European support: The European Union is the main partner, ready to finance the project (estimated at ~€220 million). France has also shown interest.
Ownership: As in Paphos, the base will remain fully under Cypriot control.

Cyprus is strengthening its defense to counter Turkish military activity on the island. Turkey continues to modernize its infrastructure in the occupied north, including a drone air base in Lefkoniko and a naval base under construction in Bogazici. The deployment of the powerful Aselsan Vural electronic warfare system on the Pentadaktylos mountain range is another challenge.
