👥 Cyprus Population Approaching One Million — But the Island Is Rapidly Aging
The population of Cyprus continues to grow. According to new figures, the Republic of Cyprus is now home to nearly 983,000 people.

📈 Over the last 20 years, the island’s population has increased by approximately 34% — one of the highest growth rates in the European Union.

According to forecasts, Cyprus could officially pass the 1 million population mark by around 2030.

But there is another trend developing.

📊 Despite population growth, the country is also aging rapidly:

• the average age of residents has increased from 37 to 41 years in just 10 years;
• the proportion of younger people is gradually declining;
• migration is playing an increasingly important role.

New arrivals are now helping offset falling birth rates. Last year alone, more than 40,000 people moved to Cyprus, while around 27,000 left the island.

At the same time, Cyprus remains one of the few EU countries where birth rates still exceed death rates.
📍 It creates an interesting situation: the number of residents continues to grow, but the population of the island is gradually becoming older.

🌅 Sometimes the Sky Doesn’t Need Filters
There are evenings when you don’t feel like adding anything — no caption, no editing, no extra words.

You simply look at the sky and realize: a day can end beautifully.

On Cyprus, sunsets like these are a kind of therapy of their own.

The sea, the clouds, the warm light, and that feeling that everything becomes quieter for a few minutes.
📍 Sometimes the best moment of the day is simply stopping and looking up.

Sky over Larnaca.

🚧 Roads in Paphos Being Repaired Day and Night — Streets Changing Within Hours
Authorities in Paphos have launched a large-scale road repair program. Heavy machinery, asphalt pavers, and work crews are now operating around the clock.

🌙 Residents may drive on an old road in the evening and wake up to see completely new asphalt by the next morning.

Instead of the usual patching of individual potholes, authorities decided to fully replace road surfaces on problematic sections.

Current works are taking place:

• on Petridion Avenue;
• near the Paphos Hospital junction;
• in the Anavargos area.

According to the municipality, all costs are being covered by the city itself — without additional state or European funding.

📍 The authorities’ goal is to bring all problematic roads in Paphos up to standard by the end of 2026.
🚗 City officials say the project is not only about improving appearance, but also about increasing safety and comfort for residents.

🏚 Emergency Meeting in Paphos Over Dangerous Buildings
Authorities in Paphos are holding an urgent meeting involving police, municipal services, and specialists over the growing issue of unsafe buildings.

📍 The meeting was triggered by concerns surrounding a residential building in the city center — at the intersection of Nikolaou Ellinas Street and Thermopylon Street.

According to reports, police stated that residents cannot simply be evacuated immediately — a separate court order is required for such action.

Authorities are now discussing the next steps.

What is currently known:

• another building is already being considered for urgent evacuation;
• property owners have submitted a renovation plan;
• 8 structural engineers have been assigned to inspect other dangerous properties.
⚠️ Following recent incidents involving unsafe buildings in Cyprus, authorities have accelerated inspections across the island.

The main goal now is to prevent possible tragedies before it becomes too late.

🏠 Europe Searching for Solutions to the Housing Crisis: Cyprus Discusses How to Slow Rising Prices
Finance ministers and central bank governors from EU countries have gathered in Cyprus. One of the key topics on the agenda is housing, which is becoming increasingly unaffordable across much of Europe.

⚠️ The issue is also very familiar in Cyprus:

• housing purchase prices continue to rise;
• rent is becoming increasingly expensive;
• affordable apartments are becoming harder to find;
• short-term rentals through platforms such as Airbnb are adding further pressure to the market.

Europe is currently discussing broader measures that some countries have already introduced:

🇪🇸 Spain — building more social housing and restricting parts of the short-term rental market.

🇮🇪 Ireland — limiting rent increases and reducing taxes to encourage construction activity.

🇭🇷 Croatia — introducing taxes on vacant properties.

Cyprus’s Finance Minister stated that the issue has now become a Europe-wide challenge requiring joint solutions.
📍 In addition to housing, discussions at the meeting also include inflation, energy prices, and the growing impact of cryptocurrencies on the economy.

💼 Cyprus Trade Unions Raise Concerns Over New EU Proposal: “The Polish Plumber” Debate Returns
Trade unions in Cyprus and across Europe have strongly criticized a proposed EU initiative aimed at supporting startups. According to unions, measures presented as business support could end up affecting workers’ rights and labor conditions.

⚠️ The main concern is linked to a principle that echoes the famous “Polish plumber” debate — a major controversy that shook Europe nearly 20 years ago.

The concern is simple:

• a company could operate in one country while applying labor conditions from another;
• this could lead to lower wages;
• pressure on collective labor agreements could increase;
• there is a risk of “social dumping,” where businesses reduce costs through cheaper labor conditions.

Trade union representatives in Cyprus have already stated that they are prepared to push for the proposal to be blocked if it reaches a vote.

They argue that support for startups should not come at the expense of workers’ rights.
📍 A vote on the initiative could take place in 2026–2027.

👨‍⚕️ GeSY Changes Rules: “Doctor Replacement” Scheme Ends in June
Starting June 1, Cyprus is introducing new restrictions for personal doctors within the GeSY healthcare system. Authorities have decided to close a practice that allowed some doctors to effectively take on thousands of additional patients.

⚠️ How did the system work?

After reaching the official limit of 2,500 patients, some doctors continued accepting new patients through a permanent “replacement” arrangement with colleagues.

As a result, some doctors were effectively responsible for:

• 3,000 patients;
• 4,000 patients;
• and in some cases even more than 5,000 patients.

This led to long waiting times, overload, and patient complaints.

What will change:

• a doctor will be allowed to replace a maximum of 4 colleagues;
• the total number of patients must not exceed 5,000;
• replacement arrangements will only be allowed for valid reasons — such as holidays, illness, maternity leave, and similar situations;
• violations will be monitored and controlled.

📍 GeSY officials acknowledge that many patients were formally registered with one doctor but in practice were repeatedly treated by another.

Authorities say the goal is to make the system more transparent and reduce pressure on doctors
For patients, this could mean one important change: getting access to a popular doctor “through connections” may become more difficult.

🩺 “No Need to Panic”: Cyprus Doctor Urges Residents to Get Vaccinated After Meningitis Cases Among Military Personnel
Following the detection of meningitis cases among military personnel in Cyprus, doctor Dimitris Pitelis appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid panic.

📍 At present, one serviceman remains in intensive care, while three others who were initially being tested for meningitis were later diagnosed with an adenovirus infection.

What is important to know:

• meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord;
• the bacterial form is considered more dangerous;
• the viral form is usually milder.

⚠️ Symptoms requiring urgent medical attention:

• high fever;
• severe headache;
• neck stiffness;
• vomiting;
• sensitivity to light;
• drowsiness or confusion;
• skin rash.

According to the doctor, the risk is higher in places where people live in close proximity — such as military barracks, dormitories, and other closed environments.

💉 Specialists say the main advice is simple: do not ignore vaccination.
👉 “There is no need for panic. We need to trust science and follow doctors’ recommendations,” the doctor emphasized.
