⚖️ British man pleaded guilty to indecent assault in Ayia Napa, now claims he didn't understand the charges due to alcohol and poor translation
In November 2025, the Famagusta District Court sentenced a British man to 9 months' suspended imprisonment for indecent assault on a man in Ayia Napa (the incident occurred on November 14, 2025). The British man pleaded guilty. He is now trying to overturn the sentence, citing confusion and misunderstanding of the charges.

🍷 His version

· At the time of the incident, he had drunk a lot of alcohol and cannot remember the events (he suspects his drink may have been spiked)
· The lawyer poorly informed him, telling him to just nod to questions in court (even with an interpreter, he didn’t fully understand the charges)
· He was in a state of shock, fear, and confusion

😨 What made him wake up

He realized the seriousness of the situation only when UK authorities informed him that due to a conviction for a sexual offense, he would be placed on the sex offenders register.

⚖️ Appeal Court decision

The court rejected the request to extend the appeal deadline. The arguments:

· The charges were read in the presence of an interpreter, and he had a lawyer
· His profession is a flight attendant, which is incompatible with claims of misunderstanding
· At the original trial, he expressed remorse

"The proposed appeal would have had no chance of success," the court concluded.

🚨Scandal in Nicosia: journalists barred from briefing because of "wrong" ID cards
A conflict broke out at a government briefing: some journalists were simply not allowed inside. The reason — they had ID cards from the Union of Cypriot Authors, but documents from the state Department of Public Information (DPI) were required.

🗣️ One of the journalists stated outright:
If the authorities cooperate with the Union, why are its IDs not recognized? Especially since, according to him, they are accepted even in the north of the island.

😡 This has provoked a harsh reaction in the media environment — accusations of pressure and an attempt to "divide" journalists are being voiced.

⚖️ The authorities respond formally:
Any access is granted only according to established requirements, regardless of the organization.

📌 The fact remains: people were allowed in with foreign IDs, but not with local ones.
👉 For Cyprus, this is a worrying sign: the issue is no longer just about access, but about the freedom of the media to work.

🏠Cyprus reopens applications for the "Rent instead of Mortgage" housing preservation program — deadline July 31
From May 4 to July 31, 2026, the Cyprus Ministry of Finance is reopening applications for the "Ενοίκιο Έναντι Δόσης" ("Rent instead of Payment") program. It is intended for borrowers at risk of losing their primary residence due to inability to service their mortgage.

🔄 How the program works

The participant transfers their apartment or house to the state company KEDIPES (Cyprus Asset Management Company). The mortgage debt is fully written off, and the former owner continues to live in the same property as a tenant. The lease agreement is concluded for 14 years, with the option to buy back the home on preferential terms after five years. The most vulnerable categories of citizens receive a state subsidy for rent payments.

📊 Participation statistics

To date, KEDIPES has received 3,340 applications. Of these:
· 1,620 are under review
· 1,151 have been rejected
· 98 have been withdrawn
· 471 applications have been successfully completed with the transfer of ownership

🗓️ How to apply

Applications are accepted online via the official KEDIPES website, as well as in person at the company's district offices in Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos, and Paralimni. Phone consultations: 22 743 400.

⚖️ Political context

The launch of the program coincides with a standoff between the president and parliament over a package of borrower protection bills. By May 12, Nikos Christodoulides must decide on four acts passed by parliament (an independent borrower protection mechanism, banning the demand for additional collateral in case of overpayment, amendments to the bankruptcy law, and access to justice regarding unfair contract terms). Some of them are expected to be sent for review to the Supreme Constitutional Court.

💡 What this means for borrowers

The "Rent instead of Payment" program operates under rules approved in 2024. For citizens who meet the established criteria (recipients of the minimum guaranteed income, large families, single parents, pensioners with the minimum pension, people with disabilities), it remains a reliable tool for preserving their home — regardless of the outcome of political and legal proceedings.

🐄 "Payouts have exceeded expectations": Cyprus government reports on progress in compensation talks with farmers over foot-and-mouth disease
Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that negotiations over compensation for livestock farmers affected by foot-and-mouth disease are progressing successfully. According to farmers, the proposed payment amounts have already exceeded their own expectations.

📈 Progress in negotiations

The discussions are not limited to compensation amounts. The replacement and restoration of livestock are also being discussed, so that farmers can resume their activities.

👩‍💼 The President's role

The President of the Republic receives information at every stage, directs and supports the efforts. He personally chaired several multi-hour meetings with the participation of all competent authorities and stakeholders.

⚖️ Strict EU framework

"The issue is not about providing a political solution to veterinary problems," Letymbiotis emphasized. "It is about the strict application of EU protocols based on scientific, not political, criteria."

He recalled that the European Commissioner visited Cyprus twice and also explained the procedures. "Departure from European rules is impossible."

🗣️ About a meeting with the president

No new meetings between the president and farmers are currently planned.

💰 When compensation increases will be announced

Letymbiotis confirmed that progress has been made, but specific figures will be announced by the relevant ministry and the advisory council when the process is "locked in" (i.e., completed).

🤝 About the protests

"The distress and outrage of those affected are absolutely justified and deserve respect," the spokesman said. "But at the same time, it must be understood that veterinary obligations to the EU cannot be ignored."

💰Cyprus has spent only 10% of its development budget: the money is there, the question is how quickly it will be used
By the end of March, Cyprus had utilized only 10% of its development expenditures from the 2026 budget. A total of €1.62 billion has been allocated for such projects, but only about €159 million has been spent so far.

📈 Meanwhile, state revenues are growing: €2.34 billion has already entered the treasury — mainly from income tax and VAT.

Where the money is going:
— roads and infrastructure
— schools and government buildings
— sewage and water systems
— healthcare and social benefits
— programs for children under 4
— universities and energy modernization
🔎The conclusion is simple: the budget is being filled, but the main question for residents is when this money will turn into decent roads, schools, services, and real improvements on the island.

⚓Cyprus Gaming Regulator: casinos on cruise ships are not within our jurisdiction
The Cyprus Gaming and Casino Supervision Commission (APEK) has clarified that its authority does not extend to casinos operating on board cruise liners and passenger ships. This applies to all vessels, regardless of their flag.

🌐 Why is this so

These establishments operate exclusively in international waters and close when entering Cyprus territorial waters (12 nautical miles from the shore) and while docked in ports. Since APEK only regulates land-based casinos, its jurisdiction does not apply in this case.

📈 Context

The global cruise casino market is growing rapidly. According to projections, it will reach $18.3 billion by 2030, with gaming floors generating up to 30% of cruise operators' revenue.

🎰 What falls under APEK supervision

Only one land-based operator is licensed in Cyprus — Melco Resorts (City of Dreams Mediterranean in Limassol and three satellites in Nicosia, Ayia Napa, and Paphos). Online casinos are prohibited on the island.

📢 Regulator's advice

APEK warns cruise passengers: play only for entertainment, not with the expectation of making money or paying off debts.

🛂Sale of fake entry permits stopped in Cyprus: four arrests, service cost €6,000
Police have detained four individuals involved in the production and sale of forged entry documents. At Larnaca Airport, a 35-year-old foreign national was stopped after presenting a fake entry permit. During the subsequent investigation, a 40-year-old female intermediary and two men, aged 51 and 41, were arrested.

💰 Scheme and cost

According to the detained individual's testimony, starting from September 2025, he repeatedly transferred €6,000 each time through intermediaries to obtain fake permits. A check through Interpol databases showed that entry into Cyprus was prohibited for this person.

⚖️ Charges

All four have been arrested by court order. They face charges of conspiracy, forgery of official documents, unlawful use of another person's personal data, and facilitating illegal migration.

📊 Context

According to the Ministry of Justice, in just the period of April 29–30, Cyprus recorded 9 arrests, 17 deportations, and 54 voluntary departures. Since the beginning of the year, 535 people have been deported, over 2,000 more have left the country voluntarily, 578 arrests on migration grounds have been registered, and 529 cases of illegal entry.

🇨🇾 900 children in Limassol danced for Cyprus, traditions, and culture
A big children's dance day took place in Limassol, where 900 schoolchildren in three groups filled the venue with music, smiles, and Cypriot traditions.

The organizers put it simply: on this day, "I" became "we" again — for the children, for culture, and for the future of Cyprus.

The event was supported by the Ministry of Education, the Limassol Municipality, the police, UNESCO Cyprus, and other organizations. Special thanks go to the teachers, volunteers, and educators who helped the children prepare the dances and workshops.
📍The next event will be on May 7, 2026, in Paphos, where 500 children will take part in such a dance day for the first time.

🙏 The goal is to make this celebration a tradition in all districts of Cyprus.

🧐May 1st: why this day still matters

🔎 140 years have passed since the events in Chicago in 1886, when workers took to the streets in massive protests demanding an 8-hour working day.

✊ The strikes turned into clashes with the police, people died — these events went down in history as one of the key moments in the struggle for workers' rights.

📆 Today, May Day is not just a day off, but a reminder of the price paid for basic working conditions. It is a day of solidarity for workers around the world.

🇨🇾 And even in Cyprus, where many live and work far from their homeland, the issues of rights, stability, and fair pay remain relevant.

👮More police officers in Cyprus: 201 graduates complete training at the Academy
Yesterday, the Cyprus Police Academy held a graduation ceremony for new police officers. Training was completed by 201 cadets from three academic intakes.

The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Costas Fitiris, the Chief of Police, Themistos Arnaoutis, and the leadership of the department.

The graduates were reminded: modern policing is not just about the uniform and authority, but also about responsibility, discipline, respect for people, and the ability to work under new conditions. Special mention was made of the fight against organized crime, changing types of offenses, and the high expectations of society.

👮‍♂️ For the residents of Cyprus, this means a stronger police force and new personnel on the island's security service.

🇪🇺Cypriot MEP calls for freezing EU funding for farmers in the "TRNC" due to foot-and-mouth disease
Costas Mavrides (DIKO party) has sent an official letter to EU Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen demanding the immediate suspension of all types of financial aid to the agricultural sector of the unrecognized "TRNC". The reason — the refusal of the authorities in the occupied territories to comply with European foot-and-mouth disease control protocols.

🐄 What is the essence of the conflict

In the south of Cyprus, farmers are slaughtering thousands of livestock, strictly following EU rules (when the disease is detected on a farm, all animals must be culled). In the north, according to the MEP, similar measures are not being taken. Dozens of farms are already infected, and many Cypriot livestock farmers place part of the blame for the spread of the disease on the "TRNC" authorities.

💶 How much EU money has been allocated to the "TRNC" for agriculture

From 2006 to 2024, the European Union directed a total of €728 million to the Turkish Cypriot community. A significant portion of these funds went to the agricultural and veterinary sectors:

· 2021–2024: €40 million (mainly to bring halloumi producers up to EU standards)
· September 2024: an additional €2.7 million for animal health protection and food safety + €2 million to improve the efficiency of agricultural cooperatives
· The 2025 aid program includes another €33.7 million (partly also for compliance with EU norms)

❓ Why this is unfair, according to Mavrides

Livestock farmers in the free areas follow Brussels' instructions and suffer enormous losses. "Will farmers who follow your protocols be punished again and again, while those in the occupied territories who refuse to implement them receive funding? Is that fair?" — Cyprus Mail quotes the MEP's letter.

📋 What the MEP is seeking

1. Immediately suspend all grants and payments to farmers and livestock breeders in the "TRNC"
2. Conduct an audit of the use of previously allocated funds
3. In the future, provide any aid only after full disease control and compliance with all EU veterinary regulations
No official response from the European Commission to the letter has been received yet.

🚔 Larnaca: during an apartment search, two jumped out of a window, three arrested
Larnaca police conducted an apartment search as part of an investigation into illegal drug trafficking. Inside the second-floor apartment were four people: three men and one woman. When law enforcement arrived, two of them — a 34-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman — tried to escape through the window, but upon landing, they sustained injuries and were apprehended. The woman broke her arm, while the man suffered bruises.

🧪 What was found in the apartment

· 946 g of marijuana
· a large number of pills
· 100 vials with an unknown substance
· 7 mobile phones
· €815 in cash

👮‍♂️ Further arrests

Another man who remained in the apartment was also arrested. A second person was released due to lack of evidence of a crime. It was also discovered that the man and woman who jumped out of the window were in Cyprus illegally.

📊 The fight against drugs in Cyprus: numbers

In 2025, the anti-narcotics unit YKAN seized:

· over 640 kg of cannabis
· about 40 kg of cocaine
· significant quantities of synthetic substances and cannabinoids

In the first quarter of 2026, seizures also remain high: over 250 kg of cannabis and 64 kg of cocaine. The increase in seizure volumes is attributed both to increased trafficking and to improved police efficiency.

Despite the rise in seizures, the number of arrests remains stable — around 780–800 people over 8 months of 2025 (more recent data is not yet available).

⛽️ Cyprus faces A-95 petrol shortage: stations are either empty or limiting sales
The island is experiencing an acute shortage of A-95 grade petrol. Drivers report that fuel is missing at many gas stations, and where it is still available, it is being dispensed in limited quantities. The price of A-95 in recent days has reached €1.61 per liter.

📈 Reason — global market

The rise in oil product prices has made purchasing A-95 less profitable for operators. Many suppliers and station owners have reduced their order volumes, and some have abandoned this type of fuel altogether. The result — minimal stocks or complete absence at stations.

🚙 How this affects drivers

About 70–80% of vehicle owners still fill up with fixed amounts (€20, €30, €50), but receive significantly less fuel than just a few months ago. They have to spend time searching for operating stations and waiting in queues.

🌍 Cyprus compared to Europe

The average price of A-95 in Cyprus is €1.53/l (range €1.44–1.61). Meanwhile, the average price in the EU is €1.76–1.83/l, and in the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, and France it often exceeds €2/l. Thus, Cyprus remains one of the most affordable countries in the EU in terms of petrol prices, but local drivers don't feel this due to price spikes and shortages.

🗣️ Authorities: the situation is worrying

Director of the Consumer Protection Service, Konstantinos Karagiorgis, described the situation as "worrying and uncertain," promising to keep it under control. The Ministry of Energy and major suppliers have not yet commented on the causes or the timeline for normalizing supplies.
Drivers hope the problem will be resolved before the start of the tourist season.

📄 Visa to Cyprus for Russian citizens: processing time reaches two months — how not to ruin your trip
Russian tourists are increasingly facing delays in obtaining the national Cypriot visa. Many receive their passport with the visa just a few days before departure, even though documents are submitted 1.5–2 months in advance.

⏳ How long to wait in practice

Application processing times often range from 45 to 60 days. Example: a family from the Kursk region submitted documents on March 11 for a trip on May 13–14. At the time of inquiry, 47 days had passed and the visa was still not ready.

❓ Why it takes so long

Since December 15, 2025, visa processing has been transferred to BLS International visa centers. An appointment is now required, and the number of available slots is extremely limited. The nearest available dates for document submission in Moscow are only from June 10.

📈 How this affects tourist flow

Despite the difficulties, the number of Russian tourists in Cyprus is growing. In 2025, about 64–70 thousand Russian citizens visited the island — approximately 1.5 times more than in 2024.

✈️ Where tourists are going instead of Cyprus

Due to the long processing times, many Russians are choosing alternative destinations:

· Turkey (visa-free)
· Egypt (visa on arrival)
· UAE (visa on arrival or online)
· Georgia and Armenia (visa-free)
· Northern Cyprus (entry via Turkey)

Some tourists also use a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa to enter Cyprus.

📌 Recommendations

· Submit your documents at least 2–2.5 months before departure
· Book an appointment with BLS immediately after purchasing tickets
· Consider trip cancellation insurance and refundable tickets
· Regularly check your application status on the BLS International website
👉Officially, the Cyprus consulate indicates a processing time of 15 to 45 days, but in practice these deadlines are regularly exceeded.

✈️ Greek F-16s spotted over Cyprus again: residents capture new footage
Early in the morning on April 30, Cyprus residents again saw two Greek F-16 fighter jets in the sky. The aircraft were flying in formation along the coast at medium altitude.

📹 Eyewitnesses filmed the footage. The shots show the fighter jets passing calmly over the island, without any sharp maneuvers.

🇬🇷🇨🇾 Their presence is linked to heightened security measures in the region. The flights may be part of patrols, surveillance, and a demonstration of readiness amid the tense situation.
For many residents, the sound of the F-16s has become a notable reminder: the situation in the region remains difficult, and Cyprus is under the watch of its allies.

⚖️ECHR finds Cyprus guilty of violating property rights: state fails to return land in Limassol to heirs
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has issued a judgment in the case of "Nicolaou and Others v. Cyprus" (application no. 37068/18). The Court ruled that the Republic of Cyprus violated Article 1 of Protocol No. 1 of the European Convention on Human Rights (protection of property). The state is obliged to pay the applicants €12,000 in compensation and €5,000 in legal costs.

🏞️ What the dispute is about

In 1976, a 7,024 m² plot of land in the Ayios Athanasios area (Limassol) was expropriated from ten Cypriot citizens for the development of an industrial zone. Part of the land was indeed used for road construction, but the remaining 3,974 m² was never built on over the decades. Negotiations with investors took place, but no project was ever realized.

In 2008, the owners and heirs demanded the return of the unused portion of the land (under Cypriot law, this is possible if the plot was not used for its intended purpose). The authorities refused, stating that the area should remain "open space," even though the industrial zone had not been officially cancelled.

⚖️ The Court's decision

Strasbourg agreed with the applicants: 32 years of non-use of the expropriated land deprives the expropriation of its legal basis. The state is obliged to return the plot. The Court deferred the question of material damage (Article 41 of the Convention — just satisfaction), finding that it was not ready to determine the amount immediately.

📜 Context

This is not the first time the ECHR has pointed out Cyprus's problems with property protection:

· January 2025 — the case of "Ioannides v. Cyprus" (a house in the buffer zone)
· A similar judgment — "Christophi v. Cyprus" (expropriation in Ayios Tychonas)

For families whose plots were expropriated in the 1970s–1980s for promised developments that never started, the ruling opens a path to reclaiming their inheritance: first through Cypriot courts, and if refused, through the ECHR.

🏭 By the way

The ruling coincides with the preparation of a new wave of expropriations: the Limassol municipality is preparing to launch the Kokkinokambos industrial zone (Limassol – Saittas road), with tenders expected to be announced by the end of 2026.

🏠Cyprus extends 5% reduced VAT rate on housing until the end of 2026: who it applies to and how it works
The Cypriot parliament has extended the transitional provisions of the law on 5% VAT for the purchase or construction of a primary residence until December 31, 2026. This applies to those who submitted a building permit application from the beginning of June 2023 to October 31, 2023 — regardless of when the building is completed.

📜 What has changed

· Previously (old law): 5% VAT on the first 200 m² of housing, regardless of total area
· New law (2023): 5% VAT only on the first 130 m² (with a value of up to €350,000), with 19% VAT on the remaining area

Parliament has reverted to the old rules for those who failed to complete construction on time due to delays in permit issuance by the new District Self-Government Organizations (EPAs). Such applicants can now still pay 5% on the first 200 m².

⚙️ How it will work

The Tax Commissioner has met with the Association of Land Development Entrepreneurs, and an agreement on the procedure has been reached. An internal circular and an official announcement are being prepared.

If a building permit is issued after January 1, 2025, it is considered not to have been completed on time. In such cases, the Tax Commissioner may individually review and approve applications for VAT reduction.

📊 Statistics (Tax Department, 2025)

· Total approved applications: 6,657
· under the old law — 3,718
· under the new law — 2,939

First 4 months of 2026:

· Total approved about 1,800 applications
· under the old law — 837
· under the new law — 963

💡 The essence for the buyer

If your building application was submitted on time (by October 31, 2023), you will be able to benefit from the old preferential terms — 5% VAT on the first 200 m² — even if construction is delayed. The new rules from 2023 (limited to 130 m² and €350,000) do not apply in this case.
