🛬 Israelis are flying to Paphos again, but Brits are not — all due to the Foreign Office warning
🇮🇱 Israelis are returning to Paphos after a nearly month-long break caused by the war, and the flow is growing every day. However, British tourists are currently hesitant.
🇬🇧 Why Brits are not flying
The official warning from the UK Foreign Office (FCDO) advising against travel to Cyprus is still in effect. As long as this warning remains, tourists and tour operators remain cautious. Insurance companies are also taking precautions, making trips riskier and more expensive.
📅 Hope for May
Thanos Michaelides, head of the Hotel Association (PASYXE), hopes the situation will change in May to save the upcoming tourist season.
✈️ Flights exist but occupancy is low
While flights with Europe are running according to schedule, planes are less crowded than usual. Although the return of Israeli flights is a significant step, the current volume is still too low to reach pre-war levels.

🌙Want to sleep better? Which evening drinks lower cortisol and which do not
❌ What to avoid before bed
· Lemon water — lemon can irritate the stomach.
· "Golden Milk" (turmeric, cinnamon) — these have warming and stimulating effects that wake the body up.
· Soy-based herbal drinks — if they cause bloating and discomfort, sleep quality will suffer.
· Cocoa (especially for sensitive people) — can act as a stimulant.
· Magnesium in citrate or carbonate form — these work as laxatives. For relaxation, magnesium bisglycinate is better (though it may not taste great).
✅ What helps to relax and fall asleep
· Hot water or almond milk — simple and soothing, provided there is no gastric discomfort.
· Chamomile — a classic. You can add mint or organic citrus (except lemon).
· Lemon balm — beneficial for the GI tract, which indirectly improves sleep.
· Mint — refreshes and soothes digestion.
· Lavender — one of the best herbs for sleep. Drink a cup when you get home and another before bed. Pairs well with orange.
· Valerian or wild lettuce — possess sedative properties. They work best when paired with lavender.
✨ Effective combinations
· Lemon balm + mint + organic orange
· Lavender + orange
· Warm almond milk + a drop of honey
🗣️ Main conclusion
There is no universal solution. Nutrition and well-being are individual. What helps one person might hinder another. Choose drinks that bring you comfort, warmth, and pleasant sensations. Improving digestion and rest creates natural conditions for good sleep and healthy cortisol levels. 💤

🏥 Patient complaints against Cypriot hospitals - injuries, shortage of materials, and possible negligence
⚠️ Main issues
· Shortage of essential medical supplies
· Delays in doctor response times
· Injuries during hospitalization
· Inadequate care
· Overcharged medical bills
· Cases of potential medical negligence
📋 Specific complaints

2. Elderly patient
· Suffered a dislocated shoulder caused by nurses while being transferred between wards
· Bruises were discovered on ribs and other body parts after discharge
· Family suspects injuries may have resulted from a fall in the hospital, but the patient cannot clearly describe the events due to their health condition
3. Planned surgical intervention for a child
· Father complained about "poor scheduling": the child remained hungry for a long time while waiting for surgery, causing intense psychological stress
· The hospital issued excessive and unjustified bills without prior written notification or cost analysis
· Medical services were itemized separately, significantly increasing the total amount

· After an IV drip was disconnected due to discomfort, an open valve was left on the line
· The patient lost significant blood and temporarily lost consciousness before staff noticed
· Developed an allergic reaction after discharge, requiring further treatment
🕯️ Two complaints of potential negligence involving fatalities (referred to the police as they fall under law enforcement jurisdiction)
· Death of a woman with cancer (undergoing silicone implant replacement after a fall). During hospitalization, she showed symptoms of thrombosis, but timely treatment was not provided; doctors reacted with delay. The death certificate cites thrombosis and a heart attack.
· A relative suspects incorrect diagnosis or inadequate examination, incomplete care, hygiene issues, the development of pressure sores, and insufficient communication with the family.
📢 What patients are demanding
· Investigation into the circumstances of hospitalizations and medical procedures
· Evaluation of planning processes and pricing policies in clinics
· Informing families about subsequent actions and developments

⚖️European Commission ramps up pressure on Cyprus over lack of female board quota law
The European Commission has issued an official warning (the second stage of the infringement procedure) to Cyprus for failing to transpose the EU directive on gender balance in the governing bodies of large public companies into national law. Eight other EU member states received similar notices.
📜 What Directive 2022/2381 requires
Large companies listed on stock exchanges must ensure:
· At least 40% representation of the underrepresented gender (usually women) among non-executive directors
· Or at least 33% among all members of the board of directors (including executive directors)
These targets must be met by June 30, 2026. The candidate selection process must be transparent, and in cases of equal qualification, preference must be given to the underrepresented gender.
⏳ Cyprus has two months
The deadline for implementing the directive expired on December 28, 2024. Cyprus has yet to notify Brussels of its compliance. If the situation does not change within two months, the case may be referred to the Court of Justice of the EU, which could result in heavy financial penalties.
⚠️ Context
Cyprus already ranks last in the European Union in terms of gender equality (according to the European Institute for Gender Equality). The new EU directive is part of a broader strategy for 2026–2030. How quickly Cyprus adopts the necessary laws will determine whether it can avoid legal proceedings and fines.

💰Cyprus Cabinet allocates €1M to identify remains of Greek soldiers killed in 1974
The Government has approved the allocation of €1 million for specialized genetic research. The goal is to identify the remains of missing persons who have remained unidentified for decades due to chemical treatment (used for preservation or odor elimination).
🧬 The Method
The research will utilize Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) mass parallel sequencing. The work will be carried out by the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, with the process scheduled to begin in May.
👥 Who is affected
The project primarily concerns 32 families of Greek soldiers who died during the events of 1974. The remains had undergone chemical treatment as far back as the 1980s.
Previously, bones were even sent to the USA for identification, but efforts were unsuccessful as technologies were not sufficiently advanced at the time. However, the Genetics Institute has already conducted an experimental identification (yielding a positive result), which provides new hope.
📜 Shocking details of the exhumation
According to eyewitness accounts, bones were collected in a single heap. An officer in charge reportedly commanded: "Bring me a head" — after which soldiers would retrieve a skull from the pile. This was followed by commands such as "Bring two hands," "leg bones," etc. As a result, skeletons were assembled from bones that could have belonged to one or multiple individuals (a human skeleton consists of approximately 134 bones).
There are existing photographs of the pile of bones of the fallen Greek soldiers, confirming this unusual and traumatic method of exhumation and assembly.
🗣️ Presidential Commissioner Marios Harçiotis stated
"The Government makes it clear: the issue of the missing is, above all, a humanitarian matter. The State is obliged to exert every effort until answers are obtained for every family of the missing."

💉Head of Special Commission Stavros Malas: Vaccination worked, Foot-and-Mouth Disease contained
💉 Vaccination against Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) has yielded results, and the spread of the disease has been successfully limited. This was stated by Stavros Malas, head of the Special Scientific Commission for the Recovery and Modernization of Livestock.
📊 Current Situation
"The spread of the disease no longer follows the same rates seen in the early stages. We hope it remains at the current level so we can begin the recovery of the industry," said Malas.
However, the epidemic will leave a long-term legacy: Cyprus will be forced to change its status from a "foot-and-mouth disease-free country without vaccination" to a "vaccinated country" for the foreseeable future. This means that the export of raw meat will become impossible, which will particularly impact the pig farming sector.
👥 Meeting with Farmers on Saturday
Malas announced that he will meet with a group of farmers who have organized themselves on Saturday. "I want to provide them with maximum transparency, explain where we currently stand, and answer all their questions. We are standing by our farmers; they are not alone."
🧬 Regarding Rare Breeds
The issue regarding the fate of rare breed animals caught in infection outbreaks falls under the competence of the veterinary service. "There is a small loophole, but with major restrictions. If one farm with a rare breed is subject to culling, but another farm with the same breed remains healthy, the breed will not disappear. However, the risk of losing genetic biodiversity is higher the fewer animals there are in the breed."
📢 Message to Farmers
"Do not listen to speculations that we are somehow trying to destroy local livestock farming. Science will stand by large and small farmers alike, including goat farmers who need scientific support and empathy."

📉Press freedom in Cyprus is declining: the island now ranks 80th in the world
In the latest Reporters Without Borders (RSF) ranking, Cyprus has lost ground once again. In 2026, the country ranked 80th out of 180, scoring 56.9 points. Since 2022, it has dropped by 15 positions. Among EU countries, only Greece is in a worse situation (86th place).
⚠️ Why the ranking is decreasing
— attempts by authorities and intelligence services to reveal journalists' sources
— discussions regarding "fake news" laws that could restrict the media
— difficulties in accessing official information
— pressure on independent media from the state, business, and the church
📌 It is separately noted that an investigation into the allegations made by journalist Makarios Drusiotis has still not been launched in Cyprus.
🌍Who is at the top and who is at the bottom
Leaders — Norway, Denmark, Sweden.
Laggards — Eritrea, North Korea, and China.
Situation in the north
In the occupied part of the island, the indicators are almost the same — 82nd place (56.6 points).
📊The main reasons for the decline are legal restrictions and the weakening of protection for information sources.

By the end of March, Cyprus had used just 10% of its 2026 development budget. A total of €1.62 billion is allocated for such projects, but only about €159 million has been spent so far.
📈 At the same time, state revenues are growing: €2.34 billion has already been collected, mainly from income taxes and VAT.
Where the money is going:
— roads and infrastructure
— schools and public buildings
— sewerage and water systems
— healthcare and social benefits
— programs for children under 4
— universities and energy upgrades
📌 Bottom line: the budget is filling up, but the key question for residents is when this money will turn into better roads, schools, services, and real improvements across the island.
