๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡พCyprus and Egypt sign strategic partnership: gas, defence, jobs and firefighting
On 24 April in Nicosia, the presidents of Cyprus and Egypt signed a joint declaration on strategic partnership. This is an important step for both countries, especially amid regional instability.

๐Ÿค What was agreed

Energy
โ€” Gas from Cyprus's Aphrodite and Kronos fields will go to Egypt โ€” either for domestic use or for processing at liquefaction plants and reโ€‘export.
โ€” The goal is to turn the Eastern Mediterranean into an energy hub for Europe's security.
โ€” Renewable energy cooperation also agreed.

Defence
โ€” A joint military committee will be established.
โ€” Exchanges between military academies will take place.
โ€” Joint exercises will continue.
โ€” Egyptian personnel will be able to train at Cyprus's CYCLOPS security centre.

Workforce
โ€” A memorandum on employing Egyptians in Cyprus will be activated.
โ€” Workers will be trained to meet local labour market needs.

Firefighting
โ€” Cyprus's regional aerial firefighting centre (CRAFS) will serve as a platform for exchanging knowโ€‘how on combating wildfires โ€” a shared threat for both countries.

๐Ÿ“ An important nuance
Cyprus expressed support for "the security of Egyptian waters" โ€” a reference to Egypt's dispute with Ethiopia over the GERD dam on the Blue Nile, on which Egypt depends for 90% of its fresh water.
๐Ÿ“ŒIn simple terms
Cyprus and Egypt are drawing closer: they will extract gas together, train together on defence, fight fires together and bring Egyptian workers to Cyprus. Cyprus also stands by Egypt in its "water dispute" with its neighbours. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’ง

๐Ÿš—How to buy a car in Cyprus in 2026: from selection to insurance
Living in Cyprus without a car is a challenge. Public transport is not always convenient, so most expats buy a vehicle. The process is not complicated, but there are some nuances.

๐Ÿšฆ Main point: leftโ€‘hand traffic
In Cyprus, people drive on the left (as in the UK). Cars with leftโ€‘hand drive exist, but on narrow roads they can be risky.

๐Ÿš™ New or used?

New:
โœ… Warranty, reliability, peace of mind
โŒ +19% VAT, rapid depreciation as soon as you drive off the lot

Used:
โœ… Lower price, wide selection
โŒ High risk of buying a car in poor condition (sun, salt, heat)

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ผ Dealer or private seller?

Dealer / car house:
โœ… Legal clarity, help with paperwork
โŒ More expensive

Private seller:
โœ… Possible to negotiate the price
โŒ Higher risk of hidden defects

โš ๏ธ Important!
Never buy a car in Northern Cyprus to drive in the South. Such a purchase is illegal โ€” the car will be confiscated and fines may exceed its value.

๐Ÿ“‹ What you need for registration:
โ€” Passport
โ€” Immigration status (ARC, Yellow Slip, Pink Slip)
โ€” Utility bill (proof of address)

๐Ÿ”Ž Before purchasing:
โ€” Check the VIN and logbook
โ€” Look up service history and MOT records
โ€” Check for any outstanding taxes or fines

โœ๏ธ Purchase process:

1. Sign a Sales Agreement
2. Visit the Road Transport Department (RTD) or a KEP centre
3. Fill out form TOM 9
4. Pay the transfer fee
5. Get insurance (Third Party โ€” minimum; Comprehensive โ€” full coverage)
6. Pay the annual road tax (depends on COโ‚‚)
7. Pass the MOT (every 2 years for cars older than 4 years)

๐Ÿ’ฐ Importing a car from outside the EU
Customs clearance is complex and expensive (duties + VAT). It is often not worth it. Better to buy a car locally.
๐Ÿ’กTip:
Japanese brands (Toyota, Mazda) are highly valued in Cyprus โ€” they withstand the heat better and spare parts are cheaper.

๐Ÿ“ŒThe bottom line:
Buying a car means freedom in Cyprus. But without insurance and an MOT you cannot drive โ€” and certainly not with "northern" number plates. ๐Ÿ›‘

Be careful, check the documents, and enjoy the roads. ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿž๏ธ

๐ŸšœPolice criticised for Rizoleia chaos. Farmers announce new protests
The farmers' protest at the Rizoleia roundabout lasted more than 12 hours. Instead of one lane as promised, traffic was completely blocked. Hundreds of drivers were stuck in jams, and VIP guests on their way to an EU summit dinner in Ayia Napa were also delayed.

๐Ÿ˜ก Who is unhappy
Justice Minister Kostas Fytiris, according to sources, is furious. He had been given assurances that the measures would not affect traffic. But reality turned out differently. Farmers set up tents, chairs and tables on the roundabout โ€” turning it into a "camp" that overshadowed a historic day for Cyprus.

๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ What police say
A police spokesperson said a plan was in place and they tried to minimise disruption while ensuring summit security. "We adopted a strategy of keeping a cool head and believe we achieved our goal."

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Farmers are not backing down
Their representative Stella Petra stated that they did not leave the roundabout in order to cause trouble for people. But if the president does not sit down with them for talks, they will block roads again. Other organisations not related to livestock farming are ready to join the protests. "Not everyone understands that this could affect everyone," she stressed.
๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธThe dispute over compensation for animals culled due to footโ€‘andโ€‘mouth disease continues. Authorities have promised to raise compensation, but farmers want a personal meeting with the president and immediate solutions. Otherwise โ€” more jams and protests. And that is no longer just "inconvenient" โ€” it hits the economy and the country's reputation hard. Not to mention the nerves of ordinary people who just need to get home from work. ๐Ÿ˜”๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’จ

๐Ÿš˜Cyprus rented 12 armoured BMWs for the EU summit: โ‚ฌ140,000 for 10 days
For the informal EU summit (23โ€“24 April), Cyprus rented 12 armoured BMW 7 Series limousines โ€” eight electric i7 models and four 760i. The cars were brought from Germany for 10 days. The total cost was approximately โ‚ฌ140,000 (around โ‚ฌ14,000 per day, or โ‚ฌ1,166 per car per day).

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Why such an expense
Transporting heads of state and senior European Commission officials requires vehicles with enhanced security. These cars meet international armouring classifications and are equipped with all modern safety features.

๐Ÿ’ถ But the money will be reimbursed
The cost of renting the armoured cars will be reimbursed from the EU budget.

๐Ÿš™ And this is for the presidency itself
At the same time, a contract was signed for the rental of 60 BMW 5 Series cars to transport delegations and administrative staff. The term is 7 months, at a cost of approximately โ‚ฌ1 million. The same practice was followed in 2012, when Cyprus last held the EU presidency. After the contract ends, the cars may be sold on the local market.
๐Ÿ“ŒIn simple terms:
Armoured limousines for presidents are expensive but necessary โ€” and the EU pays for them. The regular fleet cars for officials, however, come out of Cyprusโ€™s own budget. But afterwards they can be sold at a good price. So itโ€™s not only an expense โ€” there is potential benefit as well. ๐Ÿ’ผ๐Ÿš—

๐Ÿ„Compensation for farmers over footโ€‘andโ€‘mouth to be increased. FMD will remain for years
Authorities and agricultural unions have agreed to significantly increase payments to farmers whose livestock have been culled due to footโ€‘andโ€‘mouth disease. The decision was made at the fourth meeting chaired by the Minister of Agriculture. Final rates will be approved by a technical committee.

๐Ÿ’ฌ What participants say

Michalis Litras (president of the agricultural union):
"We have significantly raised prices compared to the initial proposals. Now it is important not only to compensate for losses, but also to help farmers restock and resume operations."

Kyriakos Kailas (president of the agricultural association):
"Footโ€‘andโ€‘mouth will remain with us for several more years. Regular vaccination reduces the risk but does not eliminate the virus. We must continue vaccinations so that animals build up antibodies."

โš ๏ธ Caution: protests may worsen the situation
Kailas understands why farmers have taken to the streets (despite the ban on gatherings), but reminds that mass meetings are one way the virus can spread.
๐Ÿ“ŒContext: Livestock farming provides jobs for 25% of the countryโ€™s workforce. This is not just a business, but an entire industry that the state is obliged to protect. Raising compensation is a step in the right direction. But FMD will not disappear in a year. People will have to learn to live with it while fighting it. Vaccination, biosecurity and dialogue with the authorities are the recipe โ€” not blocked roads and traffic jams. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿค

๐Ÿ”ฌCypriot pathologists raise diagnostic quality: Ministry of Health supports them
Health Minister Neofytos Charalambidis spoke at a scientific seminar of the Cyprus Pathological Anatomy Association. He noted that Cypriot specialists (in both the public and private systems) use modern methods, participate in international networks and continuously upgrade their skills to guarantee diagnostic quality.

๐Ÿค– Digital tech and AI already at work
"Further development of pathological anatomy with the integration of digital technologies and artificial intelligence opens new perspectives for faster and more accurate diagnosis. These processes are also under way in Cyprus," the minister stressed.

๐ŸŽฏ Biomarkers and molecular diagnostics
Special attention is being given to biomarkers and molecular analyses. These enable a shift towards personalised medicine, especially in oncology (targeted therapy). The pathologist plays a central role here.

๐Ÿงฌ Role beyond oncology
The contribution of the specialty is also expanding into other areas: autoimmune, liver, dermatological and kidney diseases. The histopathological diagnosis remains decisive.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ The state recognises its strategic importance
The minister thanked the specialists for their dedication and expressed confidence that the seminar would help further progress in medicine and the health of citizens.
๐Ÿ“ŒPathologists in Cyprus do not just diagnose under a microscope. They are introducing digital technologies, AI and molecular analysis to treat more accurately and faster โ€” especially in oncology. And the state appreciates that. ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ”ฌ
