🚪Since March, Cyprus has deported nearly 1,000 migrants — 5 times more leaving than arriving
The Ministries of Justice and Migration have reported on the spring campaign: over a month and a half (from March) — 195 deportations, 729 voluntary departures, and 204 arrests. During the same period, only 256 cases of illegal entry were registered.

📊 Annual totals (since 1 January):
— 535 deportations
— 2,052 voluntary departures
— 578 arrests
— 529 cases of illegal entry

📈 Trends:
In 2025, 11,500 people left Cyprus (+53% compared to 2023). Illegal arrivals stood at about 2,400 (5 times fewer than the 10,994 recorded in 2023).

🛠️ How the campaign works:
— Joint raids by police and immigration services (checking illegal residence and employment)
— Detainees are taken to police stations, prisons, and the new centre in Limnes (the first wing opened in March)
— An inter‑agency task force reviews cases of those who remain in Cyprus after their asylum claims have been rejected

🌍 Why the flow has dropped fivefold:

1. Shifting migration routes (the situation in Syria)
2. The agreement with Lebanon, brokered with the participation of Ursula von der Leyen — part of the funding is used to prevent boats from setting off

✈️🌊Plane landing approach in Larnaca — a sight you get used to, yet it still grabs your attention

Residents of the island know: the approach into Larnaca is always a bit of a show. The plane flies so low over the sea that you can’t help but look up every time.

🏖 For tourists, it’s the start of their holiday, but for those living in Cyprus, it’s part of the everyday scene — the sea, the sun, and planes literally overhead.

😌 But let’s be honest — even after a while, it’s still a pleasure to watch.

🏚️Germasogeia building collapse: concrete samples sent to lab — case file to be handed over to legal service today
The investigation into the tragedy at 7 Aeschylou Street (collapse on April 11, two fatalities) is nearing completion. Today, April 25, police will hand over the gathered evidence to the legal service. The final decision on whether to press criminal charges will be made by the Attorney General.

🔬 Key forensic analysis:
Concrete samples from beams, columns, and slabs have been sent to a laboratory. Experts must determine whether the material met the required design strength and how that contributed to the collapse.

📜 What is already known:
— The building was declared dangerous on March 10 (Category C — visible risk of collapse)
— The inspection took place on February 19
— On March 26, registered letters were sent to the owners demanding that residents be evacuated
— The building collapsed before the three‑month deadline expired

🕯️ Victims:
— Dex, a 27‑year‑old Nigerian citizen who had come to Cyprus for work
— Leonela Alemán Morales, a 27‑year‑old Colombian woman (identified by fingerprints, with confirmation through Interpol). She had booked the apartment via Booking just days before the tragedy. Her family in Barranquilla contacted authorities after her phone's last signal was traced to the house on Aeschylou Street.

✈️Cyprus Airways resumes daily flights to Tel Aviv after two‑month pause
Since April 23, Cyprus Airways has resumed daily flights between Larnaca and Tel Aviv. The route had been suspended since the end of February, when Israel closed its airspace due to the war with Iran.

📅 Why the pause?
On February 28, Israel closed its civilian airspace. For nearly six weeks, Ben Gurion Airport was cut off from foreign carriers. Full operations resumed on the night of April 16 after a ceasefire was announced. The first Cypriot carrier to restart flights was TUS Airways on April 14.

✈️ What now?
— Daily flights
— Cyprus Airways has assessed the situation in the region and continues to monitor it
— The summer schedule also includes Beirut, Dubai, and European destinations (France, Greece, Italy, Spain)

🗣️ Cyprus Airways CEO Thanos Paskalis:
“Tel Aviv is important both for tourists and for business. We are glad to be welcoming passengers again.”
⚠️Other airlines:
— European carriers (Lufthansa Group, British Airways, EasyJet, Transavia) have resumed flights to Cyprus, but only on European routes
— British Airways has extended its pause on flights to Israel until the end of June
— American carriers United Airlines and Delta Air Lines — until early September

🏦Credit reform in Cyprus: parliament tightens debt collection rules but rejects presidential amendments
On April 23, parliament approved a package of laws changing the rules for the enforcement of pledged property and the regulation of mortgage debt. The aim is to both speed up the judicial process and strengthen borrower protection .

📜 Key changes:
— District courts will be able to hear financial disputes over immovable property directly
— Interest accrual cap: if the debt plus interest reaches twice the original loan amount, further accumulation is prohibited
— Banks and debt collection companies are forbidden from demanding additional collateral when the existing mortgage already covers the balance
— Personal bankruptcy and debt restructuring rules have been updated
— A 12‑month period is provided to seek solutions before strict enforcement measures are applied

💼 Debt collection context (CBC data, December 2025):
— 61,613 borrowers
— €19.35 billion in debt (94% non‑performing)
— Over 8,000 properties held on balance sheets (≈€952 million)

⚖️ Why the president's initiative was rejected:
Parliament did not support extending legal protection for borrowers when challenging loan terms. The vote on the key law — the Transfer and Mortgage of Immovable Property Law — went against the president’s position . The four other presidential objections were accepted.

📺DVB-T2 switchover in Cyprus: shops see rush as set‑top boxes sell out
From May 1, 2026, analogue and old‑standard digital television (DVB‑T) in Cyprus will cease operating. All channels are switching to the DVB‑T2 standard. This only affects households that watch TV via an aerial (cable and satellite are not affected).

🏃‍♂️ What’s happening in shops:
Demand for DVB‑T2 set‑top boxes has surged — many viewers have ignored the upcoming changes. Electronics retailers are running out of stock and placing new orders (deliveries are expected next week).

🛠️ What to do before May 1:

1. Check your television — does it support DVB‑T2? (Models bought after 2015–2016 generally do.)
2. If it does — simply run an automatic channel scan.
3. If not — buy a DVB‑T2 set‑top box (decoder) or a new television.
💰Prices:
A DVB‑T2 set‑top box costs €25–35 (basic model) or €50–80 (with Wi‑Fi and recording features).

📜New asylum rules for Cyprus: law passed, changes take effect on 12 June
The Cypriot Parliament has approved the new International Protection Act. The law aligns national legislation with the EU Migration Pact, which enters into force on 12 June 2026. The vote was 35 in favour and 14 abstentions. Without this law, Cyprus would not have received €190 million from the EU for migration purposes.

🛂 What will change for asylum seekers:

Border control. All protection claims will be processed in specialised reception centres. The state will have the right to set processing priorities and use simplified review procedures.

Digital document management. All correspondence will switch to electronic format, and applicant interviews will be audio recorded.

Access to employment. Six months after submitting an application, asylum seekers will be allowed to take up employment.

Legal support. An independent monitoring body will oversee rights compliance at the border. Free legal advice will be available at the administrative stage, and free legal representation will be provided for appeals.

Vulnerable groups. The law strengthens protection for minors and people with special needs. Gaps in the family reunification rules have been closed — including in cases where family ties are established after the applicant's arrival.

💶 Financial aspects:
— €190 million from the EU for the construction and equipment of reception centres
— Solidarity mechanism: other EU member states will either relocate some refugees or pay a financial contribution. Cyprus is among the beneficiaries.

💊GHS (GeSY) in Cyprus: problems with diabetes medications and high co-payments in pharmacies
The Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) has acknowledged delays in approving injectable diabetes medications, with waiting times of 4–5 weeks . The reasons cited are software malfunctions and bureaucratic procedures. The HIO has promised to rectify the situation and reduce waiting times, including by simplifying the process for dose adjustments .

⚠️ Diabetic patients cannot afford to wait — interrupted treatment leads to decompensation of their diabetes. Tens of thousands of Cypriot diabetics (several thousand of whom specifically need injectable medications) have no other option .

💰 High co-payments in private pharmacies:
Patients taking anticoagulants are paying more than €20 per month for their medications alone . This is a result of the latest Ministry of Health price revision for medicines. Approximately 10,000 patients suffer from this problem, most of whom are low-income pensioners .

🏛️ What is being done:
— The HIO has proposed to pharmaceutical companies to cap co-payments at €10 for certain drug categories. The proposal has not yet been accepted .
— The Minister of Health has called a meeting for next week .

📦 Two-month prescriptions (Green Leaflet):
Currently, 27 specialised medications for chronic patients can be obtained with two-month prescriptions (to avoid monthly pharmacy visits). Two more will be added in May. The aim is to reduce queues at state pharmacies.

💊 Over-the-counter medications under GHS:
41 over-the-counter medications (mostly supplements and vitamins) for certain groups of chronic patients are now available not only in hospital pharmacies but also in town pharmacies. Four of these medications have already been transferred.

🐄 Cyprus farmers against the authorities: the virus is spreading, farms are under threat
Tensions continue in Cyprus over the outbreak of a disease among animals. One of the farmers, Costas Nicolaou, who took part in the protest at the Rizoelia roundabout, strongly responded to Justice Minister Costas Fitiris.

Earlier, the authorities criticised farmers because children were present near them during the protests. Nicolaou said that no parent would deliberately put their child in danger, but those who truly understand the farmers’ situation will understand their despair.

😡 Why are farmers so angry?
According to Nicolaou, farmers are afraid of losing not just a business, but their entire life’s work and source of income.

“I am ready to take even bullets, but my battlefield is my work. I have another child, a 15-year-old. I don’t know if I will wake up tomorrow with my animals. The state is not managing this crisis.”

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 A personal tragedy and accusations
The farmer also said that his family had already gone through a terrible ordeal. According to him, in 2018 foreigners broke into their home, after which his wife lost a child.

He was outraged that now he is being accused of “betraying his child” by taking part in the protests.

⚠️ What is happening with the virus?
Farmers claim that the infection continues to spread across different areas of Cyprus: from Oroklini and Dromolaxia to Athienou, Dali, Geri and now Palaiometocho.

The main complaint from farmers is that, in their view, the state failed to stop the spread of the disease in time.

💰 Disinfection at their own expense
Farmers say they spend more than €150 per week just on disinfecting their farms.

Nicolaou believes that if the state really wants to help, it should organise mandatory centralised spraying of farms instead of shifting the costs onto farmers themselves.

“We have already made the pharmaceutical companies rich.”

📌 In simple terms:
farmers in Cyprus are outraged by how the authorities are failing to handle the animal disease crisis. People are afraid of losing their farms, their income and years of hard work. That is why the protests are becoming increasingly emotional, and the conflict between farmers and the state is getting tougher.

💰Foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus: 8 fines totalling €45,000 and 6 criminal cases for safety violations
Veterinary services have carried out inspections at farms. For violations of animal movement rules, 8 administrative fines have been issued, amounting to €45,000. Six serious cases have been referred to the police for further investigation.

⚠️ The main cause of the spread is human factors:
Movement of animals, contact with infected materials, products, equipment, and transport.
📣Veterinary services urge:
— Strict compliance with biosecurity measures
— Good faith adherence to the provisions of the decree and associated guidelines
— Inspections are ongoing

⌨️The Cypriot paradox: more girls write code than boys
Contrary to the European trend, in Cyprus the proportion of teenage girls aged 16–19 who write code is 4.3% higher than that of boys. This is the only country in the EU with such a reversal. Eurostat data was published on April 23, 2026.

📊 The numbers:
— Girls: 6.29%
— Boys: 2.02%
— Overall figure for Cyprus: 3.84% (four times lower than the EU average of 14.9%)
— In all other EU countries, boys lead (on average 19.8% vs 10% among girls)

🌍 Largest gaps in favour of boys:
Portugal (+26.6%), Belgium (+17.9%), Slovakia (+17.4%)

📌 Where girls are still ahead (digital skills, not coding):
— Copying files: 79.2%
— Working with text: 75.2%
— Creating media: 71.4%
— Editing photos/videos: 62.4%
— Spreadsheets: 52%
— Advanced spreadsheet functions: 24.4%

🤔 Why is this happening in Cyprus?
There is no precise explanation. Researchers suggest that in countries where an IT career is seen as a reliable path to employment, women more often choose technical specialisations. Career prospects, role models and accessibility of education all play a part.
⚠️General context:
— In the EU, women account for only 33.5% of STEM graduates
— 40% of EU residents lack basic digital skills (the EU's 2030 target is 80%)
— The Cypriot phenomenon proves that the gender gap in coding is not biologically predetermined, but depends on the environment and the education system

🚛 Dump truck spills mud and rocks on Tseri Road: drivers forced to avoid a dangerous stretch
On the morning of April 23, a dangerous incident occurred on Ippokratous–Tseriou Road. A dump truck reportedly spilled mud, soil and stones across the roadway while driving.

According to eyewitnesses, it happened at around 07:15–07:30. The truck allegedly had a damaged or not properly closed part of its body, causing the load to fall directly onto the road.

⚠️ Why it was dangerous:
Mud and stones covered several lanes. Drivers had to slow down sharply and carefully avoid the debris to prevent damage to their cars or loss of control.

Eyewitnesses claim they tried to warn the dump truck driver with gestures, but he did not stop and continued driving.

📹 Photos and videos from the scene quickly spread on social media. After the post was published, residents helped identify the suspected registration number of the truck. The information has already been passed to the police.

👮 Law enforcement is expected to investigate the circumstances of the incident. Possible violations may include dangerous driving, an unsecured load and creating a road hazard.
📌 Important: a poorly closed truck body or unsecured load can turn an ordinary road into a dangerous accident zone within minutes. Drivers should report such incidents immediately.

🎓New Master's programme in Cyprus: Journalism + Creative Industries + Artificial Intelligence
The University of Cyprus is launching a Master's programme in "Journalism and Creative Industries." It is not just a set of courses for journalists, but an invitation to everyone who creates content or works in media and culture.

🎯 Why this matters
The world is changing fast. Journalism today is not only about news. It also includes film, music, theatre, design, and entrepreneurship. Audiences no longer want mere information — they seek emotion, experience, and a connection to place.

🤖 What students will learn
— How to create podcasts, short documentaries, and interactive stories
— How to use artificial intelligence for data analysis, visualisation, and creating cultural maps
— How to tell stories across different platforms

🏛️ Journalism meets culture
Research will connect museums, galleries, archaeological sites, sports, digital games, and even traditional crafts. The focus is not on dry facts, but on living experiences that stay in the memory.

🇨🇾 Cyprus as a laboratory
Students will study how creative industries work not only in big cities, but also in remote villages. They will produce visual stories about places, people and their traditions.
📌In simple terms
This programme is for those who want to learn how to tell stories using modern technology and art — at the intersection of journalism, culture, and business.

🔌EV chargers in Nicosia to be offline for a week, then replaced with new ones
The Nicosia municipality has signed an agreement with Petrolina. As a result, city charging stations will be temporarily switched off from April 27 to May 3. But from May 4 they will begin operating again — under new pricing.

📱 To charge your vehicle, you will need to use the pcharge app.

➕ In addition, four new charging units will be installed in the city — making the network larger and EV use more convenient.

🚗 Why this matters
The city wants to become greener. More charging points mean fewer reasons to avoid driving an electric vehicle. Convenient, straightforward — a step toward cleaner air and quieter streets.
📌In short:
27 April – 3 May — charging unavailable.
From 4 May — back in operation, but with new terms.
Four new stations coming soon. It will be easier — and cleaner.

💨Dust in Cyprus to linger until Monday. And there will be rain too
Forecasters say a thin layer of dust will remain in the air until Monday. In the coming days, cloud cover is expected, with rain and even thunderstorms possible in the mountains and inland.

🌬️ How to protect yourself
Fine dust particles (PM10) are hazardous to breathe, especially when concentrations are high. For this reason, children, the elderly and anyone in poor health should avoid going outdoors unnecessarily and refrain from exercising outside. The usual daily limit is 50 µg/m³. On dusty days, this figure soars.

🌦️ The weather

Saturday night
— Cloudy, possible fog in the east and inland
— Light winds. Temperatures: inland +12°C, coast +14°C, mountains +11°C

Saturday daytime
— Possible showers, clearing towards evening
— Temperatures up to +25°C on the plains and coast, up to +19°C in the mountains

Sunday and Monday
— Afternoon thunderstorms in places, especially in the mountains
📌The dust will linger a little longer, so people with respiratory sensitivities should stay indoors. If you do head for the hills, take an umbrella. 🌂 And take care of your lungs. 💙

🌍Cyprus calls on EU to step up engagement with the Middle East: Nicosia summit and Gulf visit
At the informal EU summit in Nicosia, President Nikos Christodoulides called on Europe to strengthen its presence in the Middle East. "Restraint must prevail over escalation," he said. Diplomacy and dialogue are the only path to peace.

🤝 Key points
— Instability in the region directly threatens Europe's security and economy
— The EU sees how the conflict is spreading beyond borders, hitting civilian infrastructure and people
— Cyprus supports the Gulf states, Jordan and Lebanon, as well as Egypt's peace efforts

📅 What happened at the summit
On 23–24 April, leaders of the 27 EU countries met in Nicosia and Ayia Napa. Then, on 24 April, the heads of Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria joined for lunch, together with a representative of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Christodoulides described the Middle East as a "vital neighbourhood" for the EU.

✈️ What's next
Next week, the President of Cyprus will travel to Qatar and Saudi Arabia to share the summit's conclusions.

A possible EU–Lebanon agreement is under discussion, as well as steps toward rapprochement with Syria (potentially including the easing of sanctions).
💡Cyprus wants to be a bridge between Europe and the Middle East — and is already taking concrete steps: receiving leaders, negotiating, and travelling to the Gulf. Because neighbours are not chosen — and it is better to cooperate with them than to fight. 🤝🕊️
