📿 Larnaca prepares for a unique procession in honour of Saint Lazarus — a tradition centuries old. Taking place today, April 4
One of the most important religious events will take place in Larnaca — the procession in honour of the city’s patron saint, Saint Lazarus. This tradition exists only here and is held 8 days before Easter, on Lazarus Saturday.

📅 In 2026, the event falls on April 4. After the evening service at Church of Saint Lazarus, the reliquary containing the saint’s relics will be carried through the city centre streets. Officials, marching bands, and residents take part in the procession, and everyone is welcome to join. A festive fair will also be held in the square near the church.

👤 Who was Saint Lazarus?
According to Christian tradition, he arrived in Cyprus at around the age of 30 after being resurrected by Jesus Christ. He was later ordained as Bishop of Kition (ancient Larnaca) by the apostles Barnabas and Paul the Apostle, and lived there for another 30 years.

⛪ In the 9th century, Byzantine Emperor Leo VI the Wise built a church in his honour. Today, it remains one of the city’s main landmarks. Visitors can see the tomb of Lazarus inside, and next to it is the Byzantine Museum.

🌊 The saint is also linked to a local legend about the Larnaca Salt Lake — it is said he turned former vineyards into salt flats.

Larnaca carefully preserves this tradition, which every year attracts thousands of locals and visitors alike. 🇨🇾

⛽ Fuel tax cut in Cyprus: petrol from €1.50, diesel from €1.83
From midnight on April 4, an emergency reduction in fuel excise duties came into force in Cyprus. The measure will remain in place until June 30 and is expected to cost the state €18.6 million. 📉💰

📊 What changed:
Excise duty was reduced by 8.33 cents per litre across all fuel types. Estimated average prices:
🔹 Petrol (95) — around €1.50
🔹 Diesel — around €1.83

📈 Before the cut:
Since the escalation in the Middle East, petrol prices rose by 27.8 cents and diesel by 50.5 cents. Brent crude reached $109 per barrel, and experts warn further escalation could push prices even higher. ⚠️

🔍 Price range at stations:
🔹 Petrol (95): average €1.592 (from €1.527 to €1.678)
🔹 Diesel: average €1.916 (from €1.788 to €1.997)

👀 Government oversight:
Consumer protection authorities are monitoring the market daily. No price-fixing has been detected so far — increases are attributed to global trends. Inspections are ongoing to ensure the tax cut is reflected at the pumps. ✅

Prices have already started to drop, but the situation remains volatile. Choose your fuel stations carefully. 🚗⛽🇨🇾

🛢️ ExxonMobil and QatarEnergy confirm Cyprus gas potential — reserves estimated at 7 trillion cubic feet
Cyprus Energy Minister Michalis Damianos announced that on March 30, a consortium of ExxonMobil and QatarEnergy submitted an official declaration confirming the commercial viability of developing the “Pegasus” and “Glaucus” fields in Block 10 of Cyprus’s Exclusive Economic Zone. Total gas reserves are estimated at around 7 trillion cubic feet. 📊🌊

📌 Is that a lot?
For comparison, Egypt’s Zohr gas field holds about 30 trillion cubic feet, while Israel’s Leviathan gas field and Tamar gas field together exceed 25 trillion. This puts Cyprus’s 7 trillion in the range of a major standalone field. Combined with “Aphrodite” and “Cronos,” it strengthens the country’s export potential. 📈

🗓️ When will production start?
The consortium is expected to submit a development plan within a year, followed by a final investment decision. Production could begin after 2030, likely around 2033. ⏳

🔢 How many fields does Cyprus have?
“Pegasus” and “Glaucus” add to previously discovered “Aphrodite” and “Cronos.” “Pegasus” was identified in 2025, while “Aphrodite” already has an approved revised development plan and completed preliminary design phase.

Cyprus continues to strengthen its position as an emerging energy player in the Eastern Mediterranean. 🌍🔋
