Fatal but less contagious — Dr. Karagiannis on the Nipah virus
Dr. Karagiannis: Nipah identified in 1999; past outbreaks confined to parts of Asia and Africa. Transmission mainly from fruit bats — saliva, urine or feces can contaminate fruit; eating such fruit may infect people. Human-to-human spread is harder than with coronavirus, but very close contact with a highly infectious patient can transmit the virus. Fatality 40–70% depending on strain and patient condition. Symptoms flu-like — headache, fever, muscle pain; may progress to encephalitis, rarely meningitis and coma. No vaccine or specific antiviral; treatment is supportive; molecular tests detect the virus.

📱e-Kalathi may make supermarkets look cheaper than they are
Cyprus Consumers' Association warns e‑kalathi, launched June 2025, can mislead shoppers. Platform lists some product flavours but omits others, making certain stores appear cheapest. Review of seven major chains found only two kept flavour prices consistent. Some items on the platform sold below manufacturer wholesale. Many supermarkets list few products and total items fell last month. Prices vary by branch more than before August 2025. Report notes gap between priciest and cheapest chains fell from 13% in July to 4.4% in January. Further investigation urged.

🚨Overtake, braking and two indicators — safety analyst on Romania crash
Nikos Kamakiotis says traces of drugs and alcohol in the van driver’s blood alter driving behaviour dramatically. Video analysis shows sequence: right indicator, brake to reduce speed, then left indicator — apparent attempt to overtake vehicles just passed into limited space. Oncoming truck struck the van, seven passengers died. Kamakiotis warns fatal crashes rose in the last two years and blames lack of real strategy. He calls for technical, safety‑oriented investigations of incidents; current police probes are legal, not safety, and private actors follow other agendas. Cites Takata airbags as an example of failed safety management.
