❄️ A snow-covered road in Troodos — Cyprus under a rare white blanket
When the mountain roads of Troodos are covered in snow, the island seems to change its character. Familiar winding roads grow quieter, the forest falls still, and every movement requires extra care and respect for the mountains.

For Cyprus, this is more than just winter — it’s a brief moment when the Mediterranean takes on a northern look, reminding us that the island also has a harsher, wilder side.

🇷🇺🇨🇾 Russians increasingly choose Cyprus: tourist numbers up 55% in one year
Russia’s Ambassador to Cyprus, Murat Zyazikov, told TASS that despite EU sanctions and the lack of direct flights, Russian interest in holidays on the island is not only holding steady but continues to grow.

According to official figures, more than 45,000 Russian citizens visited Cyprus in 2024, while in 2025 the number reached around 70,000 — an increase of about 55%. The diplomat noted that neither visa complications nor Cyprus’s potential accession to the Schengen area are discouraging tourists.

Russians are now choosing Cyprus not only for beach holidays, but also for sports, cultural and religious tourism, including pilgrimage trips. Zyazikov added that Cypriots traditionally show warmth and respect toward Russians, the Russian language and culture, and that ties between the two peoples remain strong and have been developing for decades.

❄️Morning snowfalls in Troodos
New snow blanketed Troodos early Saturday, creating striking winter scenes captured in photographs and short videos circulating on social media. Police advise caution after several small rock and soil slides were reported on mountain routes, including Evrychou–Kakopetria–Karvouna; Kakopetria–Pinewood–Pedoulas; Pedoulas–Kykkos–Kambos–Orkonda. In multiple spots surface water has accumulated, rendering the carriageway slippery. Motorists and hikers should proceed with care and expect possible obstructions. Footage shared by local weather groups.

🔊 Water Returns to the Mavrokolymbos Reservoir — and Bats Are Coming Back Too
After repairs to the Mavrokolymbos dam and the restoration of water inflow, specialists have recorded the return of bats that had left the area during the incident and the draining of the reservoir. The species involved is a protected one — fruit bats that previously lived in the dam’s tunnel.

According to environmental experts, these animals are highly adaptable. When the malfunction occurred and their habitat became unsafe, the colony left the tunnel on its own, avoiding fatalities. Special monitoring devices confirmed that no animals were trapped inside at the time of the incident.

The colony, numbering around 800 bats, had been documented as early as 2024. Now, following the tunnel’s cleanup and the completion of repairs, the bats are gradually returning — a clear sign that the ecosystem is recovering and the area is once again safe.

🇨🇾❄️ A Rare Winter Wonder in Cyprus: A Frozen Lake in the Troodos Mountains
A truly unusual sight can be seen today in the Troodos mountains — a frozen lake. Such scenes appear in Cyprus only during the coldest winters, when temperatures in the highlands stay below zero for several days in a row.

Troodos is the only region on the island where snowfall is a regular occurrence and sub-zero temperatures are sometimes recorded. Historically, the area was home to mountain reservoirs and natural lakes that supplied nearby villages with water as far back as the Venetian and Ottoman periods.

Meteorologists note that a completely frozen lake is rare even for Troodos and is a clear sign of exceptionally cold weather. These moments don’t last long, but they serve as a reminder that Cyprus is not only about sun and sea — the mountains can offer a harsh, almost Alpine winter as well.

Fatal Road Accident in Limassol: 63-Year-Old Driver Dies After Head-On Collision
A tragic traffic accident occurred in Limassol on the afternoon of January 22 on Vasileos Pavlou Street.

A car driven by a 63-year-old resident of the Zakaki area reportedly veered to the right for reasons still under investigation and collided head-on with a light commercial vehicle traveling in the opposite lane. The crash happened at around 16:30.

The driver was rushed to Limassol General Hospital, where doctors later confirmed his death.

Police have not ruled out the possibility that sudden health issues may have contributed to the accident. The exact circumstances are under investigation, with final conclusions expected after a post-mortem examination.

❄️ Prodromos in Winter — History Written in the Mountains
Prodromos is one of the highest villages in Cyprus, sitting at around 1,380 meters above sea level. Winters here have always been harsher than on the coast, which is why for centuries locals built stone houses with thick walls and small windows to keep the warmth inside.

Historically, Prodromos was a key stop for travelers, shepherds, and woodcutters moving through the Troodos mountains. Heavy snowfall often isolated the village, making firewood and livestock essential for survival. This is where Cyprus’s true “mountain character” was shaped — resilience, self-reliance, and deep respect for nature.

Today, winter in Prodromos offers a rare glimpse of the island before mass tourism: quiet, cold, slow-paced, yet deeply authentic and alive.

🥔Potato growers seek state aid after 2025 losses
Potato producers ask the state for compensation for 2025 damage from heatwave, frost and drought. They also request night water allocations to irrigate during frost. Association president Andreas Karyos says water is scarce and the Ministry replied supplies cannot be given; open-field growers who received no water last year may get none now. Growers demand subsidies to cover soaring costs and lost income and plan urgent talks with the Agriculture Minister and ministry technocrats. Prices suit consumers, not producers; imports cheaper due to plentiful water abroad.

🔊 What Happens to Your Body After Quitting Smoking: The First Benefits Appear Within 24 Hours
Quitting smoking triggers fast and noticeable changes in the body — not years later, but within the very first hours. Doctor Ana Pérez notes that the benefits of giving up nicotine are often underestimated, even though recovery begins almost immediately.

Just 20 minutes after the last cigarette, heart rate and blood pressure start to drop, reducing strain on the heart. After 8–12 hours, carbon monoxide levels in the blood decrease and oxygen supply to tissues improves. Most importantly, within 24 hours the risk of a heart attack already begins to fall as blood circulation stabilizes.

After 48 hours, taste and smell gradually return. Within a month, coughing and shortness of breath ease, the lungs clean themselves more effectively, and physical endurance increases. Over time, skin condition, sleep quality, and overall well-being improve. After one year, the risk of a heart attack is reduced by nearly half — one of the strongest proofs of the benefits of quitting smoking.

Lonely Penguin Goes Viral — Trump and Pentadaktylos
Short clip from Werner Herzog’s 2007 documentary resurfaces — a penguin steps away from its colony and walks inland across Antarctica instead of toward the sea. Herzog notes the route may be 70–80 km and could be fatal. The clip exploded online, spawning captions from dark humor to “life lessons” and the “Nihilist Penguin” meme. The White House posted an AI image of Trump leading a penguin toward snowy peaks with Greenland’s flag; US agencies and a Cypriot artist shared variations. Scientists say the bird likely suffered disorientation or a neurological issue, yet the scene struck a chord as a metaphor for collective exhaustion.
