🔥Fire in Drusia area of Paphos brought under control
Sunday 18:00 — fire broke out at the "Appies" location on the borders of Drusia community, Paphos district.
Blaze brought fully under control at 19:50, after burning about four decares (0.4 ha) of wild shrub vegetation.
Suppression lasted about 1 hour 50 minutes.
Response: five Forest Department personnel with two fire engines and three Fire Service members with one fire engine.
Cause of the fire remains under investigation.

👩‍⚕️Historic step in pediatric prevention: Prenatal and newborn screening law
Parliament unanimously approved a bill by DISY MP Fotini Tsiridou to formalize prenatal and newborn screening. The law fills a long legislative gap and guarantees universal access for all pregnant women and children. It creates a national database at the Health Ministry, sets quality, oversight and accountability rules and establishes an expert advisory committee. Since the 1980s three voluntary programs ran—prenatal tests (~280,000), metabolic screening (~323,000) and newborn hearing (~150,000). The law enables adding eight more conditions with the Institute of Neurology and Genetics.

👮Jewish community plants trees in Larnaca as Gaza protests continue
Larnaca — Under tight security the Jewish community planted trees on a road island behind Vergina High School to mark a peace agreement ending the Gaza war. Israeli Ambassador Oren Anolik and a US embassy representative attended; Larnaca municipality was represented. Organisers displayed Cypriot and US flags.
Protesters from the Alliance Against Fascism and the Pancyprian Peace Council held Palestinian flags, chanted solidarity slogans and unfurled a large red cloth symbolizing blood; anti‑riot police units were present and AKEL MPs attended.
Anolik spoke of people‑to‑people ties and thinking of future generations; US chargé Dan Mangis praised the peace deal and humanitarian cooperation. Deputy mayor thanked the community for greening Larnaca.

Haralambos Kapetanios, Coordinator for Motor Vehicles, flagged dangerous car modifications and the long absence of a binding legal framework that left roads effectively unchecked. Evo Club Cyprus set up a committee in 2006; a 2009 manual was drafted and held at the Road Transport Department but never gained legal force. A renewed committee from 2018 pressed authorities; specialist engineer exams were delayed and finally held in Oct 2024 with about 35 passing. Implementation awaits the Ministry; Kapetanios expects the manual to take effect in two–three months and hopes road conditions will improve.
