Azeri jailed 6.5 years after terrorism charges dropped
- Criminal court in Cyprus today sentenced Azerbaijani national Orkhan Asandov to 6.5 years for conspiracy; earlier, more serious terrorism charges were withdrawn.
- Asandov has been detained since late 2021 after reports he was allegedly recruited by Iran as a hitman targeting Israeli businessmen on the island. Iran rejected the claims; the formal indictment never mentioned Iranian involvement.
- After closed hearings and a plea bargain, prosecutors removed terrorism counts and assertions about Israeli targets.
- Court found nationality irrelevant; defence argued the case was not terrorist activity.
- Convicted of conspiracy to commit a felony and weapons possession. Sentence includes time already served; lawyer called it strict but lawful.

🚗UK: Stolen vehicles sent to Cyprus within hours
Police say cars and parts stolen in Britain leave the country in under 24 hours and reach markets in Europe and North Africa. Cyprus repeatedly appears as a destination, with vehicles found bound there hours after theft. Gangs operate “to order,” targeting south and southeast England. Dover port checks are a key front; officers recently stopped a car stolen the day before en route to Cyprus. Some vehicles cross borders whole, others are dismantled in chop shops. Government to ban devices used for keyless theft; possession may bring up to five years. Victims report heavy losses.
