💻From expected promotion to a zero: senior civil servant takes case to court
Senior public servant who appeared to meet promotion criteria was given a zero in her supervisor’s recommendation and appealed to the Administrative Court.
She asks annulment of the Public Service Commission decision.
Her lawyer notes master’s degree, strong past evaluations and experience and questions how a zero was assigned.
This is one of several challenges to the new evaluation system, criticized for merit and transparency.
Court may examine constitutionality and EU law compliance and whether specific provisions undermine the Commission’s role.
Annual evaluation and its response are contested within the promotion appeal.

🌟Mafia entrenched in Cyprus — Global crime index score
Cyprus ranks 129/193, score 4.5/10 in 2025 Organized Crime Index.
Experts flag corruption in law enforcement, money‑laundering and violent turf wars with high‑profile killings.
"Foreign actors"—mainly from Eastern Europe and Western Asia—play major roles.
Mafia groups dominate drugs, extortion, tobacco smuggling, illegal betting and gambling; offshore firms used to launder proceeds.
Reports allege police and officials facilitate crime.
Tax rules and weak oversight increase vulnerability; Cyprus Confidential scandal deepened distrust.
Northern occupied areas fuel smuggling; casinos used to wash cocaine money.
Recommendations: closer US cooperation and an anti‑corruption authority, effectiveness questioned.

🎤Seismic damage at Panagia Chrysorrogiatissa Monastery
Panagia Chrysorrogiatissa Monastery in Panagia suffered serious damage, says Bishop of Arsinoe and abbot Pankratios.
Abbot: when the ground shifts the whole complex moves north; a study with Frederick University will plan structural support and renovation.
Metal braces prevented further damage; existing cracks risked wall collapse and braces are only auxiliary.
Major damage on the northeast side; some roof tiles fell.
Abbot requests metal supports extended to the west. Public Works and engineer Milto Demosthenous informed.

Double quake near Paphos — Prof. Papazachos explains
Prof. Papazachos: Two strong tremors hit Paphos yesterday, M5.3 in the morning and M5.2 in the afternoon, from two different faults interacting with the Mediterranean plate.
Aftershocks expected, some may exceed M4, lasting from one week up to six months.
Experts monitor magnitude, duration and focal depth. Not unprecedented for Cyprus — recall 1955 M6 in Paphos with ~40 dead and ~1,000 injured.
Early-warning messages to phones help people away from the epicentre; Japan example: long waves let trains stop and lifts be evacuated.
Advice: stay calm, prepare home and workplace, secure heavy items and avoid dangerous objects overhead.

💧Only Lefkara reservoir saw any inflow after heavy rains
Torrential Wednesday rains flooded roads but gave almost no boost to reservoirs. On-site check at Lymbia dam found more debris than water. Water Development Department reports only Lefkara received 12,000 m3 — a very small volume; overall fullness stayed near 10.1%. Met Office spokesman Andreas Chrysanthou notes short bursts of 6–8 mm per 10 minutes triggered a yellow advisory in Lythrodontas, Lefkara, Kornos and inland. These areas yield little runoff to dams. Any rain is welcome; advisories show probability, not continuous rain.
