28 October — Nicosia honors Ohi Day
Nicosia marked Ohi Day with pride and deep emotion. Students, parents and representatives of occupied municipalities sent a message of unity and continued struggle for freedom and justice. The traditional student parade took place in front of the Greek embassy. Many young Cypriots fought for homeland and liberty; the anniversary recalls Greeks' and Europe's fight against fascism and Nazism and the defence of human rights. Schools and universities attended to honour the heroes of 1940. Children led the parade; elders watched proudly. Parades by occupied organisations and municipalities from Nicosia and Kyrenia moved the crowd, symbolising Cypriots' enduring hope for liberation.

🗣️Education Ministry: Camera installation proceeds at Aglantzia Gymnasium
Incident in Aglantzia occurred outside school hours, at night, during a parents' event, said Education Minister Athina Michaelidou. She called it a very serious act of violence but not school violence. Police have received complaints, are investigating and arrests were made. The ministry prioritizes safe schools during school hours. Measures include prevention programmes to empower students to report and refuse inappropriate behaviour, and practical steps such as cameras and guards. We prefer schools as joyful learning spaces, yet events force action; camera programme will proceed at the Platys school.

🏝️K. Nikolaidis: Even mudfish cannot survive in Cyprus dams
Dam levels critical after prolonged drought. Official reading 10.9%, but ex‑Meteorological Service director Kleanthis Nikolaidis estimates true capacity under 8% and just 2.1% in Nicosia recharge dams — "mud". "Not even catfish can live there," he said. He calls the situation extremely difficult, notes long warnings about climate change and says drought risk was underestimated. Agriculture, especially potatoes, faces serious losses; exports unlikely. Forests are stressed; desalination can meet drinking needs but cannot irrigate or refill dams. He urges considering costly cloud‑seeding programs used abroad.

🩸Misleading diabetes remedies promoted online, Despina Foundation warns
Despina Children's Diabetes Foundation reports a rise in products sold as "miracle cures" for diabetes. AI and deepfake videos with fake "doctors" promote unapproved supplements in Cypriot media. WHO, EMA and Health Canada issued strong cautions. Foundation notes financial strain can push families from proven therapies to cheap, unsafe online products. It calls for a national diabetes strategy grounded in science, safety and equal access to insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors to prevent loss of access due to cost or bureaucracy.

🚦Female figures replace Stamatīs and Grēgorīs on Cyprus traffic lights
Cyprus installed the first pedestrian traffic lights showing female silhouettes as part of a push to promote gender equality. The Transport Minister said the change is selective and the figures will not replace all existing icons. The initiative follows similar moves abroad and is presented as symbolic and limited in scope. Municipalities will decide placement. Public reaction was mixed: some hail a visible step toward inclusion, others call it largely cosmetic. Officials say the pilot will be monitored before any wider rollout.

📲Power bank ignites vehicle; expert warns on battery care
Midday incident in Nicosia district: a power bank left on the front passenger seat caught fire and damaged part of the seat. George Kyriakou, President of the Licensed Electrical Contractors Association, says power banks behave like any battery-powered device. Keep them in cool, ventilated places, avoid charging to 100%, and do not expose to direct sunlight. Ideal storage and operating temperature about 20–25°C. Charging to full may exceed voltage limits, causing overheating. Be especially careful when leaving battery devices inside cars.

🗣️Teacher evaluation: Short window offered, says Michailidou
NICOSIA — Education Minister Athena Michailidou says the ministry listened to teachers’ unions, made several changes to the new Teacher and Teaching Work Evaluation system and considers the discussion cycle closed, while allowing a small window until Nov. 5 ahead of the next Parliamentary Education Committee meeting for any further convergence. She stressed the plan is a framework for improvement, with safeguards and a five‑year phase to correct distortions. OELMEK president Dimitris Taliadoros says answers remain unconvincing and will press concerns at today’s 14:30 meeting, citing missing administrative roles in middle schools and rejecting claims that teachers oppose evaluation. Meetings with OELMEK, POED and OLTEK continue this week; POED meets tomorrow at 15:00 and OLTEK on Oct. 31.

👽Cypriot scientist maps Mars' hidden mantle
— Dr Constantinos Charalambous, UK Space Agency Fellow and InSight team member, led a study analysing seismic waves from marsquakes and impacts, using InSight seismometer data as a planetary CT scan.
— Finds: Mars’ mantle is highly heterogeneous down to about 1,400 km, with buried fragments from colossal early impacts and crystallised magma oceans.
— Interpretation: scars persisted as Mars churned slowly beneath a single rigid lid (stagnant lid), shaping thermal evolution and interior dynamics of rocky planets.
— 2019: two Martian rocks named in the Cypriot dialect.
— Work to guide future seismic missions, including far‑side lunar studies.
