He flags rising foreign military presence in the Republic of Cyprus and says this strengthens Turkey’s guarantor role. He calls projects like the Great Sea Interconnector exclusionary. First visit will be to Ankara. He vows to defend Turkish Cypriot rights and presence.

🦮Cyprus lawmakers push legal right to assistance dogs
Parliamentary Human Rights Committee moves to guarantee people with disabilities the right to be accompanied by assistance dogs. Committee chair Eirini Charalambidou says framework needed for independence, safety and dignity, but issue is complex — trained dogs, certified trainers and owner support required. Cyprus currently has no certified assistance dogs and limited state backing. MP Charalambos Theopemptou warns costs often exceed €10,000–€20,000, calling for state aid. DIKO MP Christos Senekkis says dogs are vital for mobility and access. Draft law to be prepared with disability organisations and the blind association to formalise rights and funding.

How Turkey might enter European defence
EU launches SAFE programme to boost joint defence. Parliament committees approved deal; SAFE budget set at €1.5bn, €300m for Ukraine. Four of six Cypriot MEPs warn Turkey could gain shadow role. Diko’s Kostas Mauridis: SAFE lacks political orientation; Turkey can participate via companies based in member states or via ReArm Europe 2030 escape clause, unless a member state vetoes. AKEL’s Giorgos Georgiou: von der Leyen’s €800bn plan and simplifications open doors for buyouts and joint ventures. ELAM and DISY MEPs call possible Turkish entry a diplomatic failure and urge exclusion.
