🔫 A 49-year-old resident of Paluriotissa (Nicosia district) was pointing a pistol at passersby near a kiosk
An incident occurred in the Paluriotissa area that frightened passersby.
Late in the evening on August 24, a 49-year-old man near a kiosk began threatening people by pointing a weapon at them. Witnesses claim that he was clearly trying to intimidate those around him.
The police arrived in response to a call and found the offender in a car. A pistol was found under the seat, and nearby was a cartridge which he admitted belonged to him. An examination determined that the weapon was pneumatic, but this did not mitigate the situation.
The Nicosia District Court placed the man under arrest for four days. He is charged with possession of a weapon and ammunition, carrying it with the intent to intimidate, as well as making threats against citizens. The investigation continues.

🚦Cameras bring in millions, but road markings remain in a deplorable state
The violation photo enforcement system adds millions of euros to the budget annually, yet these funds are hardly invested in improving road safety. Responsibility for the condition of markings and signs has been shifted to municipalities, but state funding remains extremely limited.
In many places, the lines on the roads have faded or completely disappeared, which is especially dangerous at night. At intersections with cameras, the situation worsens: drivers are forced to rely solely on the traffic light signal, and the lack of clear markings creates confusion and increases the risk of accidents. Experts insist on urgent measures and stable funding so that road markings fulfill their purpose — preventing accidents and ensuring traffic safety.

📊 One month until the deadline: only half of Cypriots have submitted tax returns, risking fines and queues in September
There is exactly one month left in Cyprus to complete the tax return submission campaign, but citizen activity remains low. According to the Tax Department, as of August 21, 171 thousand documents have been fully processed, of which 152 thousand have already been submitted, and about 19 thousand are being processed.
Tax Commissioner Sotiris Markidis explained that the current figure covers about 50% of the expected number of applications, which is typical for the holiday period. The deadline has been extended to September 30, 2025, and the main submission flow is expected in September.
For comparison: last tax year, 329 thousand returns were submitted. Currently, this is about 52% of last year's volume. However, direct comparisons are incorrect since figures depend on changes in employment, salary levels, and labor market dynamics.
Reminder: employees, pensioners, and self-employed persons with a total income above 19,500 euros for 2024 are required to submit a return. Documents are accepted through the TaxisNet system, where instructions and reference materials are also available.

♻️ Paphos to Revise Waste Management Strategy
Paphos authorities are set to overhaul the province’s waste management system, following a meeting between the Director of the Department of Environment, Dr. Christodoulos Mesimeris, and Paphos Mayor Faidonas Faidonos. The discussion, attended by landfill officials, community representatives, and local authorities, focused on improving household waste handling and ensuring compliance with EU regulations.
Current challenges include transporting all household waste to Pentakomo, creating high costs for residents and businesses. The plan under consideration aims to make Paphos self-sufficient in waste management, introducing source separation of organics for hotels and restaurants, and anaerobic treatment for most household waste, reducing landfill deposits to less than 10% of total waste.
Mayor Faidonos announced the imminent delivery of two organic waste collection trucks, with four more to follow, along with 900 specialized bins for hotels and restaurants. Further decisions from the Cabinet and the Ministry of Agriculture may be needed, potentially including legislative changes. The goal is a coordinated strategy where the central government sets the framework and municipalities implement it.

😢 Tragic Loss: Athlete Maria Aristotelous Passes Away After Battle with Cancer
Cyprus mourns the untimely death of athlete Maria Aristotelous, who lost her fight with cancer.
Her brother, Apostolos, expressed his grief in a heartfelt post: “Safe journey to the light, my sister. I love you to the sky! We will always be united. Thank you for everything. Watch over us.”
Maria revealed her diagnosis in 2023, describing how a small lump in her neck led to months of medical tests before cancer was confirmed. Despite the challenges, she faced the illness with the same strength and determination she had shown in sports.
A decorated athlete, she won the 2017 Balkan Championship and helped Cyprus secure 5th place in the European Team Championship that same year. In her own words, she had learned that the size of the opponent doesn’t matter — what matters is fighting with all your strength and hope.
Throughout her battle, Maria highlighted the importance of family, friends, doctors, and faith, calling them her “strongest strike team.” She encouraged others to face life’s hardships with courage, humor, and perseverance.
Her passing leaves behind a deep sorrow, but also an inspiring legacy of resilience and hope.

🇨🇾President Christodoulides Stands Firm on Tax Reform: “This Is a Major Effort, Not to Be Undermined”
President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides firmly defended the government’s proposed tax reform, stressing that it represents a landmark initiative of his administration.
Responding to criticism of the six draft bills, he emphasized that the reform is designed to support Cypriot businesses, families, and the middle class. One of the key provisions includes reducing the defense tax on companies from 17% to 5%, along with a series of additional incentives.
“This reform reflects the identity of our government,” Christodoulides underlined, adding that the last comprehensive tax restructuring took place in 2002. He called for constructive dialogue, noting: “I hear much criticism, but no concrete ideas or suggestions.”
