The process of updating waste containers has begun in Ayia Napa. According to the municipality, the work started on Nissi Avenue and will continue next year on Kryo Nero Street.

The new bins, authorities say, stand out not only for their modern design but also for their improved functionality and durability.

Mayor Christos Zannetou explained that this is only the first stage of a large-scale program to upgrade the city’s infrastructure. “Ayia Napa is world-renowned for its hospitality and natural attractions, and our investments must match this high standard, enhancing the quality of life for both residents and visitors of the resort,” the mayor noted.

🔊 Authorities of Ypsonas Refuse to Allow Restoration of Burned Paper Factory
The authorities of Ypsonas have refused to grant permission for the restoration of a paper factory destroyed by fire. According to Pantelis Georgiou, mayor of the Kourion municipality, the decision is connected to systematic violations of operational conditions at the facility.

The mayor stated that the factory was licensed only for the storage of stationery and aluminum, but gas canisters were being kept there illegally, which ultimately caused the fire.

To prevent similar incidents, municipal services plan to carry out unscheduled inspections of all industrial zones bordering residential areas. The damage to nearby houses has been initially assessed as minor. After an expert evaluation, compensation will be paid to those affected.

📉 According to Eurostat, Cyprus ranked first in the European Union for the number of company bankruptcies in the second quarter of 2025.
📊 The number of businesses that closed increased by 67%, while new registrations fell by 8%.

📊 Experts explain this sharp rise by pointing to expectations of new legislation. Starting in 2026, the island will introduce the right to suspend company operations for violations of tax law. Many entrepreneurs prefer to close their businesses voluntarily in advance to avoid future sanctions and debt accumulation.

❗️This wave of bankruptcies reflects the instability of the business environment and the efforts of companies to adapt to tightening regulations.

🔊 CAR ATTACK ON A LUXURY BOUTIQUE: Absurd Accident or Deliberate Strike on Business in Deryneia?
On the evening of August 21, the quiet town of Deryneia became the scene of a shocking incident: a car at full speed crashed into the storefront of a boutique selling fashion accessories, turning the upscale shop into ruins. The impact was so strong that the building’s facade was seriously damaged, the display window shattered into pieces, and the boutique’s interior was partially destroyed.

What was behind this incident? Was it just a ridiculous accident—or someone’s deliberate act? The store owner, whose business is now paralyzed, is forced to shut down the boutique indefinitely for urgent repairs. Local residents and customers are in shock: how could such a thing happen in what seemed to be a peaceful neighborhood of Famagusta?

Police are investigating what caused the driver to mount the sidewalk and head straight into the shop. Was it a traffic accident caused by a technical failure, human error, or a deliberate act? There are no answers yet, but one thing is clear: the incident raises questions about street safety in the city and the potential risks local businesses face.

🪖 Failure of the Cypriot Army Reform: Why Are Women Ignoring Contract Service Despite Government Promises?
The National Guard of Cyprus is facing an unprecedented recruitment crisis. The ambitious SYOP program aimed at attracting 700 female contract soldiers is on the verge of complete failure - only 70 candidates have applied, which is a catastrophic 10% of the plan.**
The Ineffectiveness of Financial Incentives
Experts unanimously cite the absolutely non-competitive level of monetary compensation as the key reason for the failure. The offered 1200 euros per month not only seem insufficiently attractive - this amount is significantly lower than earnings in civilian sectors of the economy. For educated young women, who are the target audience of the program, such pay appears frankly humiliating.
Systemic Trust Crisis
Behind the external figures lies a bigger problem - absolute distrust of the military system. Potential candidates openly express their unwillingness to tie their lives to an institution known for conservative views and patriarchal traditions. The lack of clear career growth programs and professional development prospects further deters the most ambitious and educated applicants.
International Context and Comparisons
The situation is made particularly acute by successful examples from other countries. In the armies of Greece, the United Kingdom, and Scandinavian countries, women make up to 15% of personnel thanks to comprehensive adaptation programs, social guarantees, and competitive pay levels. The Cypriot program looks especially pale against this background, offering minimal conditions without any unique value proposition.
Consequences and Prospects
**Military leadership finds itself in an extremely difficult position. The solemn ceremony to summarize recruitment results, scheduled for the end of October in Paphos, risks turning into a public admission of failure. Senior officers are forced to urgently reconsider the program's conditions, but even doubling the funding is unlikely to repair the damaged trust and reputational harm.

This failure clearly demonstrates the fundamental mismatch between the declared goals of military reform and the real capabilities of the state. For modern Cypriot women, patriotic slogans have proven insufficient motivation without concrete social and financial guarantees.

🔊 Concern in Cyprus: Students Losing Knowledge About the 1974 Turkish Occupation
Cyprus’ Ministry of Education is raising alarms as schoolchildren show a troubling decline in knowledge about the 1974 Turkish occupation. In a circular sent to all educational institutions, the ministry announced urgent measures to revitalize the program “Ξέρω, Θυμάμαι, Απαιτώ!” (“I Know, I Remember, I Demand!”).

To combat historical forgetfulness, the ministry instructs schools to establish special museums dedicated to the occupied territories, organize meetings with refugees, study archival materials, and explore the cultural heritage of the lost regions. All school units must take part in special events designed in cooperation with the Central Student Council.

The main goal is to restore the younger generation’s memory of the 1974 tragedy and prevent the occupied territories of Northern Cyprus from being forgotten.
