🔥 Cyprus to Receive Two Additional EU Aircraft for Wildfire Response
The European Commission has included Cyprus among the countries at heightened risk of wildfires during the 2026 fire season. As part of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, the island will receive two additional light firefighting aircraft.

✈️ How much firefighting equipment will be available in Cyprus?

The two new aircraft will complement the four firefighting planes already operating on the island under existing EU support programmes.

In addition, the European Union has placed the following resources on standby across member states:

▪️ 22 firefighting aircraft;

▪️ 5 helicopters;

▪️ 777 firefighters from 14 countries.

These resources will be pre-positioned in the regions considered most vulnerable to wildfires, including Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal and France.

🚒 Why is the EU strengthening its preparations?

According to EU officials, wildfires are becoming more frequent, longer-lasting and more destructive as a result of climate change.

The focus is therefore shifting not only to emergency response but also to the pre-deployment of equipment and personnel before major fires break out.

🛰 The situation is monitored around the clock by the EU Emergency Response Coordination Centre using the Copernicus satellite monitoring system.

🏗️ New European firefighting base in Cyprus

A new regional European firefighting base is also expected to become operational on the island in 2026.

The facility will be capable of hosting up to six firefighting aircraft and will serve as a training centre for civil protection specialists from both EU member states and countries across the wider Southern Mediterranean region.
🌲 For Cyprus, which faces a high risk of wildfires every summer, the enhanced European support is expected to improve response times and strengthen protection for the island’s most vulnerable areas.

🏥 Cyprus Considers Changes to Nurse-to-Patient Ratios in Hospitals
The Ministry of Health of Cyprus has launched a public consultation on proposed legislation aimed at addressing the chronic shortage of healthcare staff in hospitals.

The draft law would revise minimum nurse-to-patient ratios and increase the number of ward assistants in healthcare facilities.

📉 What changes are being proposed?

Current staffing requirements in most medical, surgical, geriatric and gynaecological wards are:

▪️ Day shift – 1 nurse for every 5 patients;

▪️ Evening shift – 1 nurse for every 6 patients;

▪️ Night shift – 1 nurse for every 8 patients.

The Ministry proposes increasing the workload to:

▪️ Day shift – 1 nurse for every 6 patients;

▪️ Evening shift – 1 nurse for every 7 patients;

▪️ Night shift – 1 nurse for every 9 patients.

Similar adjustments are proposed for psychiatric units and dialysis centres.

⚕️ Why is this being considered?

According to the authorities, the healthcare system is already facing a significant shortage of nurses. Private hospitals have repeatedly warned that staffing shortages are leading to the closure of beds and reduced capacity in certain departments.

The proposal would also allow a hospital’s chief medical officer to adjust staffing levels based on the condition and care needs of patients.

👩‍⚕️ More ward assistants

At the same time, the government plans to significantly increase the number of ward assistants.

For example:

▪️ under current rules, no assistant is required for wards with up to six patients;

▪️ under the proposed system, at least one assistant would be required even for wards with six patients or fewer.

Larger wards would also receive increased support staff.

⚠️ The proposal has already sparked debate. Professional nursing organisations have previously opposed similar measures, arguing that increasing nurses’ workloads could negatively affect the quality of patient care.

The draft legislation will now undergo further consultation before being considered by Parliament.

🚰 Limassol to Replace 100 km of Water Pipes in €9.2 Million Infrastructure Upgrade
Limassol is set to launch one of its largest infrastructure projects in recent years. The Limassol District Local Government Organisation has signed a contract for the complete modernisation of the water distribution network in the city centre.

💶 The project is valued at €9.2 million and is being funded by the European Union through the THALEIA 2021–2027 programme.

📍 What will be done?

Over the next two years, crews will replace approximately 100 kilometres of ageing water pipes across 220 streets in central Limassol.

The works will cover an area of around 2.6 square kilometres, stretching from the Enaerios area and Makarios III Avenue to Pentadromos and the seafront.

The project includes:

▪️ installation of new water pipelines;

▪️ excavation and construction works;

▪️ restoration of roads and pavements;

▪️ upgrades to the drinking water distribution system.

💧 How will residents benefit?

According to local authorities, the upgraded network will improve water supply services for approximately 40,000 residents.

Expected benefits include:

✅ fewer pipe bursts and service disruptions;

✅ reduced water losses;

✅ improved drinking water quality;

✅ lower maintenance costs;

✅ more reliable water supply during drought periods.

🌞 For Cyprus, which regularly faces water shortages, reducing losses within the distribution network is considered one of the most effective ways to strengthen long-term water security.

🚧 Will there be disruptions?

Yes. Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armeftis has warned that traffic arrangements in the city centre will be temporarily affected and that some other projects may need to be postponed until the works are completed.

📅 Construction is scheduled to begin in July 2026 and is expected to be completed by mid-2028.
📌 City officials say the temporary inconvenience will be the price of creating a more modern and reliable infrastructure system that will serve Limassol for decades to come.

🐄 Cyprus Tightens Measures Against Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Livestock to Be Culled Within 24 Hours and Fines Raised to €250,000
Cyprus has introduced new emergency measures to combat the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), which has already affected 120 farms across the island.

📌 Key measures include:

▪️ livestock on farms with confirmed cases must be culled within 24 hours of official confirmation;

▪️ the nationwide accelerated vaccination campaign will continue;

▪️ controls on the movement of animals and animal products will be further strengthened;

▪️ police and the military will assist with inspections and enforcement of biosecurity measures.

💉 Vaccination progress

According to the authorities:

▪️ 84% of cattle have received a second vaccine dose;

▪️ 78% of goats and sheep have received a second dose;

▪️ 41% of pigs have been vaccinated.

⚠️ The government also plans to significantly increase penalties for violations:

▪️ administrative fines of up to €100,000;

▪️ court-imposed fines of up to €250,000.

Farmers had previously protested against the large-scale culling of livestock. However, following negotiations, they agreed to the destruction of animals on farms where the virus has been officially confirmed.
🦠 The outbreak in Cyprus involves the SAT-1 serotype, a strain of the foot-and-mouth disease virus that is rare in the Eastern Mediterranean region and against which local livestock have little or no natural immunity.

🌤️ Paphos Forest Beneath a Sky That Looks Like a Movie Scene
A truly dramatic sky unfolded over the Paphos Forest — dense clouds, golden light and a landscape that simply makes you stop and admire the view.

In moments like these, it becomes clear that Cyprus is far more than just beaches and the sea.

🌲 The Paphos Forest can be just as captivating as the island’s coastline. Its tranquillity, mountain silhouettes, dense greenery and striking skies create a scene that feels almost unreal.
📍 A reminder once again of how breathtaking Cyprus can be when nature takes centre stage.

🚴‍♂️ Delivery Rider Spotted Cycling on a Cyprus Highway
A delivery rider was recently spotted travelling along a Cyprus highway on a bicycle, riding on the shoulder of the road with a delivery backpack on his back.

⚠️ Important: Cyclists are not permitted to use motorways or high-speed roads in Cyprus.

Such behaviour poses a serious risk not only to the cyclist but also to other road users.

Vehicles on motorways travel at high speeds, and any unexpected movement or manoeuvre can have tragic consequences.

📍 Cyclists are expected to use regular roads, designated cycling lanes and routes through urban or residential areas — not highways.
The message is simple: no delivery is worth risking a life. A motorway is not a place for a bicycle.

💻 Cyprus Launches Online Residence Permit Renewals: What Has Changed for Foreign Residents
Cyprus’ Migration Department has begun testing a new online service that allows certain types of residence permits to be renewed electronically through the government’s CY Login platform.

📌 Which permits can now be renewed online?

▪️ residence permits for employed workers who remain with the same employer;

▪️ residence permits for domestic workers;

▪️ residence permits for employees of foreign interest companies;

▪️ residence permits for spouses and dependent children of such employees;

▪️ long-term residence permits.

⚠️ The service currently applies only to the renewal of existing permits. Initial applications must still be submitted through the standard procedures.

👤 Who can use the service?

▪️ third-country nationals;

▪️ employers;

▪️ authorised representatives.

A verified CY Login account is required.

📨 Individuals interested in participating in the pilot programme can submit their contact details to:

[email protected]

🏛️ Traditional submission methods remain available, as the online platform is still operating in a pilot phase.

⏳ Residence permit applications and renewals currently take approximately four months to process.

Temporary residence permits are subject to:

▪️ a €70 issuance fee;

▪️ an additional €70 registration fee in the Aliens Register for first-time applicants.

📱 The new online system is expected to reduce queues, minimise visits to migration offices and speed up application processing.

The digitalisation of migration services forms part of Cyprus’ broader programme to modernise public services.

Authorities are also preparing for the implementation of the European Entry/Exit System (EES) and integration with ETIAS, both of which are intended to streamline border controls and document processing for foreign nationals.
❕ As the project remains in its pilot stage, applicants are advised to continue planning around standard processing times and to monitor future announcements from the Migration Department.

🥔 Which Potato Varieties Performed Best in Cyprus in 2026?
Despite a challenging growing season marked by rain, low temperatures and strong winds, several potato varieties delivered strong yields and demonstrated excellent resilience under Cyprus conditions.

The findings were reported by Dutch potato breeder Agrico and its Cypriot partner Optimus Land following inspections of commercial and trial plantings across the island.

📈 Top-performing varieties of the season:

▪️ Babylon;

▪️ Vogue;

▪️ Paradiso;

▪️ Fajah.

According to Agrico, these varieties achieved high yields, produced quality tubers and maintained good skin finish despite difficult weather conditions.

🌱 The following varieties also showed strong results:

▪️ Jacky;

▪️ Jolene.

Farmers highlighted their reliability and consistently stable production.

🔬 Among the new varieties currently being tested in Cyprus, three stood out in particular:

▪️ Feliz;

▪️ Jamaica;

▪️ Sivas.

Company representatives said these varieties exceeded expectations and demonstrated strong adaptability to local growing conditions.
☀️ Crop resilience is becoming increasingly important for Cyprus. The island’s agricultural sector regularly faces droughts, extreme heat and rapidly changing weather patterns, making the selection of adaptable varieties a key factor for future production.
