⚠️ Hamas Operative Living in Cyprus Accused of Involvement in Planned Terror Attack in Israel
Israeli prosecutors have alleged that one of the individuals involved in coordinating a planned attack against Israeli military personnel is residing in Cyprus and is linked to Hamas.

According to the investigation, the individual is a relative of one of two suspects arrested in East Jerusalem and allegedly coordinated their activities from Cyprus.

What happened?

📍 Two 21-year-old residents of East Jerusalem were arrested on suspicion of preparing an attack targeting Israeli soldiers.

Prosecutors claim that the suspects:

▪ studied instructions for manufacturing improvised explosive devices (IEDs);

▪ gathered information about military facilities;

▪ planned an attack on an Israeli military base.

Investigators allege that one of the suspects maintained regular contact with a relative living in Cyprus who is associated with Hamas.

What else is included in the indictment?

📸 According to prosecutors, the suspect provided photographs of military sites and information about a hotel in Jerusalem where he was employed.

The indictment also alleges that he shared details regarding a group of Israeli Air Force cadets staying at the hotel, including accommodation dates and room numbers.

⚠️ Prosecutors further claim that discussions included the possibility of carrying out a suicide attack against the target.

What charges have been filed?

One of the defendants faces charges including:

▪ preparation of a terrorist attack;

▪ contact with a foreign agent;

▪ transferring information to an enemy organisation;

▪ terrorism-related offences.

The second defendant has been charged with participating in a conspiracy to commit a terrorist act.

❗ At present, there is no confirmed connection between this case and the two Palestinians arrested earlier in Cyprus near Governor’s Beach on suspicion of possessing materials that could be used to manufacture an explosive device.

Investigations in both cases remain ongoing.

🗳️ Debate Over Cyprus Electoral System After MP Elected with Fewer Than 300 Personal Votes
Following Cyprus’s parliamentary elections, a debate has emerged over whether the country’s current electoral system fairly represents voters.

The discussion was sparked after a candidate from the Direct Democracy party was elected in the Paphos district despite receiving fewer than 300 personal preference votes.

At the same time, several candidates in Nicosia received significantly more votes but failed to secure a seat in Parliament.

Why did this happen?

📍 In Cyprus, voters cast their ballots primarily for political parties, while also having the option to express a preference for individual candidates.

Parliamentary seats are first allocated to parties based on their overall share of the vote.

The seats won by each party are then distributed among that party’s candidates according to the number of preference votes they received within their electoral district.

As a result, a large number of personal votes does not automatically guarantee election.

For example:

▪ a candidate from a smaller party in Paphos may enter Parliament with only a few hundred votes;

▪ a candidate from a larger party in Nicosia may receive thousands of votes but still fail to win a seat because of strong competition within the party list.

How were the seats distributed?

🗳️ According to the election results:

▪ DISY — 27.1% of the vote and 17 seats;

▪ AKEL — 23.9% and 15 seats;

▪ ELAM — 8 seats;

▪ DIKO — 8 seats;

▪ ALMA — 4 seats;

▪ Direct Democracy — 4 seats.

For the first time in 57 years, EDEK failed to win representation in Parliament.

Voter turnout was approximately 66%.

Can the system be changed?

⚖️ Some experts argue that such outcomes are a normal consequence of a proportional representation system, which is designed to reflect support for political parties rather than individual candidates.

Critics, however, believe that situations where an MP is elected with only a few hundred votes can undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

Supporters of the current system note that Parliament itself determines the rules governing seat allocation, meaning that any reform would have to be approved by lawmakers.
📌 Discussion of possible electoral reform is expected to continue in the newly elected House of Representatives.

💉 New Anti-Cancer Injection Eliminated Tumours Completely in Some Patients
An international clinical trial has produced promising results for the experimental cancer drug amivantamab, with some patients experiencing the complete disappearance of their tumours.

🌍 The study involved 102 patients from 11 countries suffering from advanced head and neck cancer that had stopped responding to standard treatments.

The results were encouraging:

▪ tumours significantly shrank or disappeared in 43 patients;

28 patients experienced substantial tumour reduction;

15 patients showed no detectable signs of disease following treatment.

What is amivantamab?

🧬 The drug targets cancer through three different mechanisms:

▪ blocking the EGFR receptor, which promotes tumour growth;

▪ inhibiting the MET pathway, which can help cancer cells resist treatment;

▪ activating the immune system to attack tumour cells.

Researchers say that this combination of actions may explain the strong responses observed even in patients with very limited treatment options.

What do doctors say?

Professor Kevin Harrington of the Institute of Cancer Research in London described the findings as “unprecedented.”

According to him, the study involved patients whose cancers had already failed to respond to both chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

❗ However, researchers stress that the trial is still in the clinical testing phase and does not yet represent a definitive cure for cancer.

How is the treatment administered?

💉 Unlike many modern cancer therapies, amivantamab is delivered by subcutaneous injection rather than intravenous infusion.

This makes treatment:

▪ faster;

▪ more convenient for patients;

▪ potentially less costly for healthcare providers.

Most side effects were reported as mild to moderate, and fewer than 10% of participants discontinued treatment because of adverse reactions.

What happens next?

🔬 Johnson & Johnson is currently conducting around 60 clinical studies of amivantamab across various types of cancer, including:

▪ lung cancer;

▪ colorectal cancer;

▪ stomach cancer;

▪ brain tumours.
Specialists believe the drug could become one of the most promising developments in targeted cancer therapy, although further clinical trials and long-term patient monitoring will be required before its full effectiveness can be confirmed.

A traffic accident occurred at around 3:00 a.m. on 1 June at the intersection of Republic Avenue and the Limassol Road in the Pera Chorio area.

🍬 Expired Sweets Sold at Larnaca Festival: Several Visitors Report Feeling Unwell
Several visitors to the Kataklysmos celebrations in Larnaca reported feeling unwell after purchasing sweets from a man who was presenting himself as a priest.

💶 One customer said he paid €12 for two portions of sweets and only noticed after the purchase that the expiration date on the packaging was December 2024.

After consuming the product, both he and his grandmother reportedly suffered from stomach problems.

⚠️ According to local media, the same man was involved in a similar incident in 2024. At that time, he was also dressed as a clergyman and was reportedly collecting donations for the construction of a school at a monastery in Kalo Chorio, Limassol district.

However, community officials later stated that no permits had been issued for the construction of either a school or a church, and that the fundraising campaign had not been officially authorised.

Where can consumers report concerns?

📞 In Cyprus, reports about expired or potentially unsafe food products can be submitted through:

▪ the Consumer Protection free hotline — 1429;

▪ email — [email protected];

▪ emergency situations — 112.
📌 Authorities advise consumers to check packaging and expiration dates before purchasing food products at public events and festivals.
