🌿 Scientists Find That Some Spices May Help Lower Blood Pressure
A new study has shown that regularly adding herbs and spices to meals may have a positive effect on blood pressure.

📍 The experiment involved 71 participants who were at increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Participants followed diets with different levels of spices:

🔹 low amount;

🔹 moderate amount;

🔹 higher amount — approximately 6.5 grams per day.

The spice mixtures included various herbs and seasonings such as:

▪ oregano;
▪ thyme;
▪ turmeric;
▪ cinnamon;
▪ cumin;
▪ basil.

❗ After four weeks, participants consuming larger amounts of spices showed lower blood pressure readings.

Importantly, no major dietary changes were introduced — researchers simply increased the amount of herbs and spices added to regular meals.
Specialists note that spices can make food more flavorful without extra salt, sugar, or saturated fats, which is especially important for heart health.

🏛 Most Members of Cyprus’s New Parliament Will Be Able to Retire at 60
Following the introduction of Cyprus’s new pension reform, it has emerged that among the 56 members of the new parliament:

🔹 34 MPs still retain the right to retire at the age of 60;

🔹 another 22 MPs will only become eligible for pensions at 65.

The reason lies in the specifics of existing legislation and constitutional limitations.

📍 The right to earlier retirement was preserved for those who had already held public office before the reform — including former ministers, MPs, mayors, and civil servants.

Among the newly elected MPs who still qualify for retirement at 60:

▪ Georgios Pamboridis — former Health Minister;
▪ Christos Petrides — former Defence Minister;
▪ Andreas Constantinou — former mayor;
▪ ELAM MPs Evgenios Chamboullas and Andreas Papacharalambous.

❗ The reform, which came into force in August 2025, was designed to eliminate so-called “multiple pensions” for officials and members of parliament.

Most new public officials are now subject to a retirement age of 65.
However, authorities were unable to fully change the rules for some officials due to constitutional protections and already accumulated pension rights.

💸 Two New Cyprus MPs Refuse State Pensions
DISY MP Savia Orphanidou and ALMA leader Odysseas Michaelides have officially declined the pensions they were entitled to receive as former public servants.

📍 This became possible after the adoption of a new law allowing officials and members of parliament to temporarily suspend pension payments while receiving a state salary.

Savia Orphanidou has already submitted her declaration to the Minister of Finance. She was eligible for a professional pension as a former employee of the Finance Ministry.

❗ During the previous parliamentary term, she had also directed her MP salary to the Republic Fund.

Odysseas Michaelides likewise confirmed that he will sign a waiver отказаться from the pension connected to his previous work in the state audit service.
📌 In total, five parliamentarians currently have the right to receive both an MP salary and a state pension simultaneously.

AKEL Secretary General Stefanos Stefanou has not formally waived his pension, but since January 2025 he has reportedly donated all pension payments to charity.

Two other MPs — Yiannakis Gavriel (AKEL) and Georgios Karoullas (DISY), both former teachers — must make their decisions by June 9.

🚨 Cyprus Tightens Migration Rules: “Pournara” to Become Border Asylum Processing Zone
Cyprus’s Council of Ministers has adopted an important new decision on migration policy.

📍 The Pournara Reception Centre will now officially be classified as a “border asylum procedure centre.”

This means that foreigners transferred there after arriving in Cyprus will legally be considered as not yet having entered the country, even though the centre is located within the territory of the Republic of Cyprus.

❗ Authorities will be able to hold asylum seekers in Pournara for up to 12 weeks while their cases are being examined.

During that period, officials will decide whether to:

▪ allow the person to remain in Cyprus;
▪ or begin deportation procedures.

The new rules will apply in cases where:

🔹 a person is considered a security threat;

🔹 false information was provided;

🔹 the individual arrived from a “safe country”;

🔹 the asylum application is considered unfounded.

📌 At the same time, authorities also announced the withdrawal of refugee status from two Palestinians accused of attacking three Israeli citizens in central Nicosia.
Deputy Migration Minister Nikos Ioannides stated that foreigners who break the law and do not respect the country “will lose their status and be deported.”

✈️ EU Changes Tour Cancellation Rules: Travel Companies Can No Longer Force Vouchers on Customers
The European Union has officially updated its rules on package holidays. The new directive strengthens consumer protections and introduces strict deadlines for refunds in cases of cancellations and tour operator bankruptcies.

📌 The key change: vouchers can now only be issued with the customer’s consent.

Tour operators must clearly inform travelers that they have the right to choose a cash refund and are not obligated to accept a voucher.

What else has changed:

▪ if a trip is cancelled due to war, a natural disaster, or another emergency situation, refunds must be issued within 14 days;

▪ in the event of a tour operator bankruptcy, compensation through insurance funds must be paid within a maximum of 6 months (or up to 9 months in complex cases);

▪ if a voucher is not used within 12 months, the money must be refunded automatically;

▪ vouchers may be transferred once to another person;

▪ airlines and hotels are now required to refund tour operators for cancelled services within 7 days.

📍 The EU has also required tour operators to respond more quickly to complaints:

🔹 complaint acknowledgment — within 7 days;

🔹 full response — within a maximum of 60 days.

The new rules directly affect residents of Cyprus as well.

❗ Although the directive has already entered into force, EU member states have been given time to implement it. The new rules will become fully mandatory approximately 34 months after the directive officially takes effect.
📌 The reform was prompted by problems during the COVID-19 pandemic, when thousands of travelers were unable to recover money for cancelled trips for many months.

🏠 Cyprus Freezes Villa of Bangladeshi “Golden Passport” Holder
Cyprus’s anti-money laundering authority MOKAS has secured the freezing of a luxury villa in Parekklisia belonging to Bangladeshi businessman Mohammad Saiful Alam.

📍 The asset freeze order was issued by the Nicosia District Court on May 19.

According to investigators in Bangladesh, Alam may be linked to a large-scale banking fraud and overseas money transfer scheme involving more than €8 billion.

What is known about the case:

▪ the investigation covers the period from 2009 to 2024;

▪ authorities believe the funds were moved abroad through offshore schemes;

▪ part of the money may have been used to purchase property in Cyprus and Singapore.

Bangladeshi investigators describe Alam as one of the key figures in the alleged scheme.

📌 The request to freeze the property was submitted to Cypriot authorities as part of an international investigation.

Earlier, a court in Bangladesh ordered Alam and several other suspects into pre-trial detention in connection with a loan of approximately €6 million, reportedly issued for the purchase of buses that were never actually bought.
❗ According to local media reports, the businessman also attempted to renounce his Bangladeshi citizenship. Reports claim that in addition to Cypriot citizenship, he also holds a Singaporean passport.

The case has once again drawn attention to Cyprus’s former “citizenship by investment” programme, which was shut down following an international scandal.

🐄 Cyprus Now Has 120 Infected Farms: Animal Burial Site Sparks Public Scandal
Foot-and-mouth disease continues to spread across Cyprus. Following the discovery of new outbreaks in the Nicosia district, the number of infected livestock farms has risen to 120.

📍 New cases were identified in:

▪ Mammari — 8 animals;
▪ Kokkinotrimithia — 35 animals;
▪ Paleometocho — another 207 animals.

At the same time, a major controversy has erupted over the burial of culled livestock in Larnaca.

What happened?

📺 Footage broadcast by SIGMA TV claimed that trenches containing animal carcasses remained open for several days after burial.

Public concern also intensified after reports that a truck used to transport animal carcasses was later allegedly used to carry hay.

❗ The allegations triggered widespread criticism and questions about compliance with sanitary regulations.

What did the Veterinary Services say?

Authorities stated that:

▪ the burial site was selected far from residential areas and farms;

▪ the work was coordinated with environmental and geological services;

▪ the carcasses were buried according to protocol and covered with soil.

According to the Veterinary Services, heavy rains later washed away part of the soil covering, prompting an urgent delivery of additional clay to the site.
📌 Officials insist that all burial locations in Larnaca and Nicosia remain under constant monitoring.

However, authorities declined to comment on the reports concerning the truck used to transport hay.

⚖️ Cyprus Justice Ministry Responds After Prison Guards Demand Criminal Investigation Against Minister
Cyprus’s Ministry of Justice has issued a strong response after the prison guards’ union “Isotita” (Equality) called for a criminal investigation into Justice Minister Costas Fytiris, prison management, and PASYDY officials.

📍 Earlier, the union accused authorities of pressuring union representatives and interfering in disciplinary procedures.

What did the Ministry say?

In its official statement, the Ministry stressed that:

▪ disciplinary investigations are being conducted lawfully and without interference;

▪ no one has the right to pressure ongoing investigations;

▪ attempts to apply public pressure do not serve “either trade union activity or proper administration.”

❗ The Ministry also stated that it will not tolerate:

🔹 interference in disciplinary processes;

🔹 pressure aimed at “foreign or improper objectives”;

🔹 the creation of a “culture of impunity” within institutions under the Ministry’s supervision.

Authorities also acknowledged that problems exist within Cyprus’s prison system and stated that concrete actions have already been launched to address them.
📌 The dispute escalated after the “Isotita” union filed complaints with the Attorney General and police, demanding an investigation into possible criminal offences involving prison system management and the Ministry of Justice.

⛽ Fuel Prices in Cyprus Expected to Fall in the Coming Days
Petrol and diesel prices in Cyprus could begin decreasing within the next 10 days. The forecast was announced on May 28 by Savvas Prokopiou, chairman of the Association of Petrol Station Owners.

📍 The reason is the recent drop in global oil prices by approximately $10–15 per barrel.

According to Prokopiou:

▪ changes in global oil prices usually reach Cyprus with a delay of 10–15 days;

▪ last week diesel prices fell slightly, while petrol prices rose a little;

▪ petrol station owners now expect a gradual downward correction.

❗ However, industry representatives stress that the situation remains unstable.

“One day there is hope, and the next day everything changes again,” the association chairman said.
📌 Against the backdrop of the conflict involving Iran, fuel prices in Cyprus have already risen significantly since February 2026:

🔹 petrol prices increased by approximately 27–44 euro cents per litre.

The expected decrease is currently viewed more as a temporary correction following the decline in oil prices rather than a long-term market reversal.

🛒 European Commission Fines Temu €200 Million Over Dangerous Products and EU Rule Violations
The European Commission has imposed a €200 million fine on the platform Temu under the Digital Services Act (DSA). The penalty follows serious violations related to the handling of risks connected with dangerous and illegal products sold to European consumers.

According to the investigation, Temu failed to establish an effective system for identifying and removing unsafe products.

📌 During inspections, authorities found:

▪ chargers that overheated and could catch fire;

▪ children’s toys posing choking hazards;

▪ products violating European safety standards;

▪ items potentially containing dangerous chemical substances.

The European Commission stressed that the issue concerns not just individual sellers, but the platform’s overall control system itself.

Additional concerns included:

▪ weak seller verification procedures;

▪ insufficient action against counterfeit goods;

▪ recommendation algorithms that promoted dangerous products;

▪ “addictive design” elements within the app.

📅 Temu must submit a corrective action plan by 28 August 2026.

Otherwise, the EU may impose additional sanctions. Under DSA rules, fines can reach up to 6% of a company’s global turnover.

The investigation into Temu is ongoing.

🏖 Sunbeds and Umbrellas Become More Expensive in Cyprus for the First Time in 18 Years
Starting from 1 May 2026, new rental prices for sunbeds and umbrellas have come into effect on Cyprus’s municipal beaches. It is the first price increase since 2008.

📌 The new maximum prices are:

▪ sunbed — up to €3.50 instead of €2.50;

▪ umbrella — up to €3 instead of €2.50.

A full set with two sunbeds and one umbrella now costs around €10 per day.

Where prices have already increased:

🔹 Ayia Napa
🔹 Limassol
🔹 Paphos
🔹 the free Famagusta district

In Larnaca, however, prices have so far remained unchanged.

📍 The new rates apply only to municipal beaches. Private beaches and hotels are free to set their own prices.

Why were prices increased?

Authorities say the rates had not changed for almost 18 years, despite rising maintenance and beach service costs.

Ayia Napa Mayor Christos Zannetou previously stated that the city’s beaches generated more than €2 million in revenue over the past three years alone.

❗ However, the increase has already sparked a wave of criticism. The Cyprus Consumers Association reported receiving numerous complaints.

According to the organization:

▪ sunbed rentals have risen by approximately 40%;

▪ umbrella rentals by around 20%.

The Association is urging municipalities to reconsider the new pricing policy.

💸 ECB Moves Closer to Rate Hikes as Inflation Fears Grow Across Europe
The European Central Bank (ECB) may raise interest rates again in the coming months. This is indicated by the newly published minutes from the ECB’s April meeting.

📌 In April, the regulator kept the key deposit rate at 2%, but the decision was reportedly far from unanimous.

According to the meeting minutes:

▪ some Governing Council members were already pushing for rate increases;

▪ discussions were described as “borderline” and tense;

▪ the ECB is adopting tougher rhetoric on inflation.

What is worrying the ECB?

The main concern is rising energy prices amid the conflict in the Middle East and risks surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

The ECB believes:

⚠️ the energy shock could become long-term;

⚠️ inflationary pressure is intensifying;

⚠️ risks to the eurozone economy have increased.

ECB Chief Economist Philip Lane has already suggested that inflation forecasts may be revised upward during the June meeting.

What does this mean for Cyprus residents?

📈 Higher interest rates usually lead to:

▪ more expensive mortgages and loans;

▪ increased payments on variable-rate borrowing;

▪ reduced access to credit.

At the same time, the ECB is attempting to slow inflation and rising prices across the eurozone.
Financial markets are already pricing in the possibility of another rate increase later in 2026.

🐶 Why Some Dog Breeds More Often Trigger Aggression From Other Dogs
Many owners notice that French Bulldogs, Pugs, and other brachycephalic breeds are more likely to become targets of aggression from other dogs. But the reason is usually not the personality of these animals.

The issue lies in their “language of communication.”

Dogs read each other’s emotions and intentions through body signals:

▪ tail position;
▪ facial expressions;
▪ posture;
▪ ear movements;
▪ the way they approach one another.

In some breeds, these signals are distorted or almost absent.

Why do conflicts happen?

📍 Short or missing tail

A dog’s tail is one of its most important communication tools. Other dogs use it to understand emotions such as fear, friendliness, tension, or a desire to play.

Bulldogs and similar breeds often have very short tails, making their behaviour harder for other dogs to “read.”

📍 Unusual appearance

A broad chest, large head, skin folds, and unusual facial expressions can sometimes be interpreted by other dogs as signs of threat or dominance — even if the dog is completely calm.

📍 Short muzzle

Brachycephalic breeds rely less on scent and often move too close to another dog when trying to sniff them.

Many dogs perceive this as an invasion of personal space, which can trigger an aggressive response.

📍 Breathing sounds

Snoring, snorting, and heavy breathing — common in Bulldogs and Pugs — may sometimes be interpreted by other dogs as signs of stress or aggression.

Can this be avoided?

Yes. Socialization plays a major role.

🐾 Dogs that are exposed from an early age to different breeds and body types usually react more calmly.

Owners should also carefully monitor the distance between dogs and avoid overly sudden or intrusive interactions.

At the same time, Bulldogs and similar breeds are generally known for being very friendly, affectionate, and social dogs.

🦠 Cyprus Prepares Emergency Plan for Possible Andes Hantavirus Case: Up to 42 Days of Quarantine and Treatment Only in Nicosia
Cyprus’s Ministry of Health has prepared a special emergency response plan in case of the possible arrival of Andes virus (ANDV) — a rare and dangerous hantavirus.

The move follows international monitoring of passengers from the cruise ship MV Hondius. The document, issued under the codename “LITO”, has already been distributed to doctors within the GeSY healthcare system.

What does the plan include?

📍 In the event of a suspected infection, a national emergency response mechanism will immediately be activated involving:

▪ the Ministry of Health;
▪ Nicosia General Hospital;
▪ ambulance services;
▪ the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics;
▪ police and Civil Defence.

Who will be considered a suspected case?

Monitoring will apply to individuals who:

▪ had contact with passengers or crew members of the MV Hondius;

▪ develop fever;

▪ report pain, respiratory symptoms, or gastrointestinal symptoms.

Quarantine up to 42 days

High-risk contacts may face home quarantine for up to 42 days.

They will be required to:

▪ remain in a separate room;

▪ wear a medical mask;

▪ avoid public transportation;

▪ report symptoms daily.

If a person’s condition worsens, they will be immediately isolated and examined.

Where will patients be treated?

❗ The only designated reference hospital is the state hospital in Nicosia.

Other clinics will only be allowed to temporarily isolate patients before transfer.

Preparations include:

▪ separate hospital wards;

▪ special biosafety protocols;

▪ restricted staff access;

▪ negative-pressure isolation rooms.

What are authorities saying?

The Ministry of Health stresses that the risk to the population of Cyprus remains “extremely low.”
📌 Human-to-human transmission of the virus is considered rare, and there are currently no signs of ANDV spreading in Europe.

Authorities also stated that all official updates will be published centrally in order to avoid panic and misinformation.

🚗 Cyprus Issues Warning Over Potentially Dangerous Audi Q5 and Scania Vehicles
Cyprus’s Department of Road Transport has issued a warning about two vehicle models added to the European Safety Gate alert system due to potential injury risks.

The list includes:

▪ Scania trucks from the L, P, G, R, and S series manufactured between 15 August 2024 and 27 February 2026;

▪ Audi Q5 vehicles produced between 10 July and 19 December 2025.

What is known about the risks?

Safety warnings have been issued for both vehicle types due to possible injury hazards.

📍 Safety Gate notification numbers:

▪ SR/01445/26 — Scania;
▪ SR/01448/26 — Audi.

The technical reasons behind the warnings were not specified. However, the Safety Gate system is used across the EU for the rapid exchange of information about dangerous products — from vehicles to electronics.

What should owners do?

If you own an Audi Q5 or a Scania vehicle from the affected production periods:

▪ check the vehicle’s VIN number;

▪ verify the production date;

▪ contact an official Audi or Scania dealer in Cyprus.
The vehicle may require an inspection or technical repair.

📌 A VIN is a 17-character vehicle identification number used to determine a car’s exact production date and specifications.
Cyprus’s Department of Road Transport has also instructed importers and dealers to inform authorities about deliveries of the affected models to the Cypriot market.

💉 Cyprus to Switch Diabetes Patients From Victoza to Ozempic Due to Drug Shortage
Cyprus’s Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) has announced that supplies of Victoza have been completely exhausted and has instructed doctors to transfer patients to Ozempic starting from 1 June.

Both medications are used to treat type 2 diabetes and belong to the GLP-1 agonist class of drugs.

What will change?

📍 Victoza contains the active ingredient liraglutide,
📍 while Ozempic contains semaglutide.

HIO has already sent instructions to:

▪ general practitioners;
▪ endocrinologists;
▪ geriatric specialists;
▪ private pharmacies.

At the moment, Ozempic 0.5 mg and 1 mg doses are available within the system.

What should patients do?

❗ Patients must not change treatment on their own.

People currently taking Victoza are advised to contact their treating doctor so a new request for Ozempic approval can be submitted through the GeSY system.

Doctors will individually determine the dosage and transition plan for each patient.

The Ministry of Health and HIO are also urging patients not to interrupt therapy before the official switch to the new medication.

Why is there a shortage?

Shortages of GLP-1 medications have been reported across Europe since late 2023.

According to the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the reasons include:

▪ rapidly increasing demand;

▪ limited manufacturing capacity;

▪ widespread use of these medications for weight loss.
