🌊 Debate Erupts in Limassol Over Large Number of Paid Sunbeds at Kourion Beach
A dispute has broken out in Limassol over the growing number of paid sunbeds at Kourion Beach.

Local residents complain that every year there is less free space available for people bringing their own towels and umbrellas, while a significant part of the beach is occupied by paid loungers and parasols.

💬 On social media, many Cypriots are actively discussing that public beaches should remain accessible to everyone and not turn into fully commercialized zones.
Some users are calling for a review of the rules governing sunbed placement and for enough free beach areas to remain available for visitors.

💊 Pharmaceutical Companies Propose Changes to Medication Co-Payment System in ΓεΣΥ
Pharmaceutical companies in Cyprus are proposing changes to the way medication co-payments are calculated within the ΓεΣΥ healthcare system, including the introduction of a fixed maximum limit for patient contributions toward medicine costs.

Currently, if a patient chooses a medication that is not the cheapest in its category, they must pay the price difference. For example, if the base medication costs €10 and the selected one costs €12, the patient pays an extra €2.

After the recent price revision, some co-payments for certain medications exceeded €20, triggering complaints from patients and discussions between the HIO, pharmaceutical companies, and patient organizations.

📌 What the companies are proposing:

• divide medications into two categories — generics/off-patent and patented medicines;
• calculate co-payments as a fixed percentage instead of based on price differences;
• ensure at least one medication in each category remains available without extra charges;
• exempt vulnerable population groups from co-payments.

Patient organization ΟΣΑΚ previously proposed capping the maximum co-payment at €8.
For now, the HIO is not ready to discuss a full reform of the system, but another meeting with all involved parties is expected in the coming days.

✈️ Flights to and from Cyprus Have Become Significantly More Expensive Ahead of the Summer Season

Airfare prices to and from Cyprus have risen noticeably ahead of the summer travel season.
The main reasons include rising aviation fuel prices linked to the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, reduced numbers of flights on certain routes, and strong demand for summer travel.

According to tourism market data, prices on some routes have increased by €100–120 compared to last year. Flights to Athens and other popular European destinations have seen particularly sharp increases.

📈 Deputy Tourism Minister Kostas Koumis stated that:

• flights outside the EU have become on average €88 more expensive;
• flights within Europe have increased by around €29.

Cyprus Association of Travel Agents president Charilaos Papacharalambous advises travelers to book tickets as early as possible, choose midweek departures, and avoid peak summer dates whenever possible.

💬 According to him, a Larnaca–Athens round-trip flight in September may currently cost around €220, although choosing less popular travel days can sometimes reduce the price to around €90.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has already warned that rising fuel costs will inevitably continue affecting ticket prices in the coming months.

🚨 Up to 300 Smuggling Cases Detected Monthly at Cyprus Checkpoints
According to the Customs Department, up to 300 smuggling cases are recorded every month at crossing points in Cyprus.

The most commonly smuggled goods across the dividing line include:

• tobacco products;
• fuel;
• meat and livestock products.

Customs spokesperson George Constantinou stated that most violations involve small quantities of goods transported by private individuals. However, authorities believe the main problem lies not at the official checkpoints, but along illegal routes through the buffer zone.

📦 According to customs officials, the volume of smuggling through unauthorized crossings is “many times greater” than what is detected at official crossing points.

🚬 Smuggled tobacco is often transported onward to third countries, including the United Kingdom. Some shipments have even been discovered in passengers’ luggage at airports.
Authorities also noted that major drug shipments usually do not pass through the northern part of the island, but instead arrive via airports, postal services, and courier networks.

🐢 Plastic in the Mediterranean Is Becoming an Increasingly Deadly Threat to Sea Turtles
According to Spain’s CRAM Foundation, plastic was found in 74% of rescued and examined sea turtles in 2025. Young Caretta caretta turtles are suffering the most — the same species that inhabits the coastal waters of Cyprus.

🌊 Researchers warn that the Mediterranean Sea is gradually turning into a “plastic trap” for marine life.

Sea turtles:

• swallow plastic fragments;
• suffer from intestinal inflammation and immune system problems;
• become entangled in nets, ropes, and fishing gear.

In 2025, four turtles had to undergo flipper amputations due to severe injuries caused by entanglement in marine debris.

☠️ Experts warn that the danger comes not only from the plastic itself, but also from the toxins it absorbs in seawater and carries through the food chain.
Environmental groups are calling on Mediterranean countries, including Cyprus, to strengthen measures aimed at reducing plastic pollution and protecting marine ecosystems.

🏥 Disputes Between Healthcare Professional Groups in Cyprus Are Increasingly Slowing Reforms in ΓεΣΥ
According to local commentators, conflicts between professional groups in Cyprus’s healthcare sector are increasingly delaying reforms and the introduction of new services within the ΓεΣΥ healthcare system.

Disagreements reportedly occur not only between different sectors of medicine, but also within professional communities themselves. The disputes involve clinical laboratories, trade unions, patient organizations, and various medical specialties.

📌 As a result:

• some laws are adopted but remain unenforced for years;
• part of the reforms stay blocked;
• the introduction of new healthcare services is constantly postponed.
One example frequently mentioned is that ΓεΣΥ still does not offer a fully developed occupational therapy service.

☀️ What Are Solar Parks and How Do They Work in Cyprus?
Investments in solar energy are becoming one of the most talked-about sectors in Cyprus. The reason is simple: the island increasingly needs its own electricity production, and photovoltaic parks are turning into a strategic infrastructure asset.

📈 In 2024, peak electricity demand in Cyprus rose to 1,294 MW, while total electricity sales exceeded 4,211 GWh. At the same time, Cyprus remains an isolated energy system and still cannot import electricity in the volumes it needs.

⚡ How does a solar park work?

A photovoltaic power station converts sunlight into electricity:

• solar panels generate direct current (DC);
• inverters convert it into alternating current (AC);
• the electricity is then fed into the national grid.

A 1 MW solar plant typically requires around 1,500–1,800 solar panels.

💰 Why is it profitable?

The main advantage is the absence of fuel costs. Sunlight is free, and after launch, expenses are mostly limited to equipment maintenance.

Revenue depends on:

• electricity generation volumes;
• electricity sale prices;
• quality of technical maintenance.

Electricity prices in Cyprus remain among the highest in the EU, which often makes solar projects more profitable than in continental Europe.

🧽 What is important for stable profits?

Efficient operation requires:

• constant equipment monitoring;
• regular panel cleaning — dust can reduce output by 5–15%;
• monitoring equipment degradation.

The average efficiency decline of solar panels is around 0.5% per year.

🌍 Why Cyprus?

The island is considered one of the best jurisdictions for solar energy because of:

• more than 300 sunny days per year;
• high solar irradiation levels;
• EU support and renewable energy targets.

The European Union requires renewable energy to reach 42.5% by 2030. Cyprus is currently at around 24%.

🚧 Main challenges in the market:

• limited electricity grid capacity;
• lengthy approval procedures;
• shortage of suitable land plots.

That is why projects with already-approved grid connections are especially valuable.

🏗 Many investors prefer entering the sector through specialized funds rather than building stations themselves. Such funds already own licensed projects and handle management, grid connection, and operations.
👉Experts note that solar energy in Cyprus is gradually becoming not just an investment opportunity, but a critical part of the country’s infrastructure.

🏗 Demand for Construction Materials in Cyprus Is Growing by Around 7% Per Year
Authorities say the steady rise in demand is linked to the construction boom Cyprus has experienced in recent years.

A particularly important role is played by the Pyrgos quarry zone in Larnaca, which supplies a significant share of inert construction materials for both Larnaca and Nicosia.

📦 Extraction volumes continue to grow:

• in 2024, sales reached around 1.3 million tons;
• in 2025, they increased to 1.4 million tons.

According to the Ministry of Transport, the Skira Lime quarry has operated in the region since the 1960s and remains one of the island’s key sources of construction stone.

⛏ Authorities warn that shutting down the quarry could seriously impact Cyprus’s construction sector.

According to ministry estimates:

• other quarries would not be able to quickly replace volumes of 1.4 million tons;
• transporting materials from distant regions would be too expensive and environmentally inefficient;
• closure could require the creation of a new quarry zone with additional environmental and social consequences.

🌿 At the same time, local residents and members of parliament continue expressing concerns about the environmental impact of quarry operations and air quality.
However, according to the ministry, conducted studies did not detect PM10 dust levels exceeding permitted limits, and during 65 years of quarry activity no serious consequences for nearby communities have been officially recorded.

He also said the assistance became an example of European solidarity and referred to the activation of Article 42.7 of the EU Treaty on mutual defense.

🇪🇺 Christodoulides additionally emphasized that EU enlargement is not “charity,” but a geopolitical necessity and part of Europe’s security strategy.

The president stated that Cyprus and Greece remain:

• “factors of stability” in the region;
• allies in security matters;
• partners in migration, energy, and digital transformation.

📌 In his speech, he also thanked Athens for its long-standing support on the Cyprus issue and reminded the audience that after the events of 1974, Greece became the Republic of Cyprus’s main diplomatic ally on the international stage.
💬 Amid rising tensions in the region, Christodoulides’ speech in Athens has become one of the strongest and most symbolic statements about the Cyprus–Greece alliance in recent years.
