๐Ÿš— Dangerous viral challenge reaches Cyprus: driver crosses roundabout through the center
A reckless new trend from social media has appeared on Cypriot roads. It is the so-called "roundabout challenge." Participants deliberately drive not around the roundabout, but straight through its central section.

What happened?

Late on Wednesday evening, May 6, a video appeared on social media filmed at the roundabout near the General Hospital in Latsia (Nicosia). The footage shows a car speeding toward the roundabout, driving onto the central mound (soil and grass), and crossing it in a straight line, completely ignoring traffic rules.

Why is this especially dangerous?

The most alarming thing is that tire tracks are clearly visible on the central island in the video. This is clearly not the first time. Someone has performed this stunt before, possibly multiple times. Turning the road into an improvised challenge venue is becoming a habit.

What is this trend?

This behavior is part of a global viral phenomenon. Drivers film themselves performing dangerous and illegal maneuvers with their phones, then post the videos to TikTok, Instagram, and other social networks for likes and views. It is often presented as a joke or a trick, but in reality it is a gross violation of traffic rules that endangers the life of the driver and those around them.
The Cyprus police have not yet officially commented on this incident. However, road safety experts are already expressing serious concern. ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿšซ

๐Ÿšœ Farmers cancel today's protest at Rizoelia after government intervention
Cypriot livestock farmers have called off their planned protest at the Rizoelia junction today. The reason โ€” an initiative by the president, veterinary services, and the Ministry of Agriculture to begin consultations. The organizers stated that for the first time they see a willingness to listen to the industry's problems, so they decided to give dialogue a chance.

What happened?

Farmers had announced a powerful protest for 11:00 AM. The main demand was to stop the mass culling of animals infected with foot-and-mouth disease. However, after negotiations with the authorities, the protest was canceled. The organizers emphasized that they were given a week for their requests to be considered. The decision to cancel was made in good faith and with hope for substantive solutions for the future of agriculture.

Warning from the Minister of Justice

The day before, Minister of Justice Costas Fitiris met with farmers at the Larnaca Police Department and warned: blocking Rizoelia will not be allowed. "If you try to close the junction, the police will intervene," he stated. The minister emphasized that the right to protest is respected, but it should not interfere with the free movement of citizens, especially during peak hours.

Background

On April 23, at this same junction, protesters did block traffic despite police instructions. As a result, foreign EU leaders were affected: they had to detour through neighboring communities. The situation was called a failure of coordination. Now the authorities are determined not to allow it to happen again.
Farmers, for their part, promise to monitor developments and assess further steps. For now, dialogue continues. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ„

๐Ÿ“š Paphos Library turns into a basement storage โ€” professionals express serious concern
The Cyprus Librarians Association (KEVEP) expresses deep indignation and concern over the situation at the Paphos Public Library. In essence, the institution is ceasing to exist.

What is happening?

The library is to be moved to the basement of the Faculty of Tourism and Entrepreneurship (DITOUFE) building in Paphos. The association calls this decision devastating: the library as a living public space is simply being eliminated. Books, archival documents, and other valuables are already being packed into cardboard boxes. Empty shelves and stacked boxes are the current picture.

Why is the basement unsuitable?

According to specialists, the proposed location is not suitable for storing books, especially rare and unique documents that constitute the city's cultural heritage. The necessary equipment and conditions are lacking. There is a serious risk of damage or even destruction of the collection.

Furthermore, the basement cannot serve the functions of a public library according to modern standards. Access for people with disabilities, the elderly, and families with children will be difficult or impossible. There is simply no space for reading promotion events, competitions, or other cultural activities.

Paphos is the only such city

The association emphasizes: Paphos is the only municipality in Cyprus that has not had a proper public library for many years. In other cities (Aradippou, Paralimni-Deryneia, Limassol, Strovolos, etc.), libraries have been modernized, staffed with qualified personnel, and transformed into cultural centers. Paphos not only fails to follow this path but does not even participate in reading promotion programs under the Deputy Ministry of Culture, thereby losing state funding.

What else is alarming?

A significant part of the book collection has not been entered into the automated system. There is no electronic catalog. Combined with the absence of professional staff, this means that books and documents may simply get lost in boxes without proper registration and public access.

What do librarians demand?

The association insists: immediately reconsider the decision to move, find suitable, accessible, and equipped premises. Hire qualified personnel. Carry out full automation of the collection. Include the library in cultural and educational programs.
The association states that it is ready to offer its experience and knowledge to save an institution that is vital for a modern democratic society. A library is not a book warehouse, but a key element of culture, education, and social cohesion. ๐Ÿ“–โš ๏ธ

๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ Street in Paphos to be renamed from Atatรผrk: decision connected to century-old history
The Paphos City Council has voted to rename a street in the Moutallos district. It will now bear the name of Nikos Kapetanidis โ€” a Greek journalist executed by Turkish nationalists in 1921. The proposal was put forward by DISY councilor Nina Garaklidou and was supported by the majority of council members.

Why was the decision made to rename it?

According to Garaklidou, the current name (in honor of the founder of the Turkish Republic) evokes painful feelings among the district's residents. The area is primarily inhabited by Greek Cypriots who relocated from the north of the island after 1974, as well as Pontic Greeks who arrived after the collapse of the USSR. "Street names are not just signs; they reflect our values, roots, and history," the councilor stated.

Why were there Turkish names in Moutallos in the first place?

Before 1974, this Paphos neighborhood was historically Turkish Cypriot. Streets bore the names of Turkish and Turkish Cypriot figures: poet Namฤฑk Kemal, former Turkish president ฤฐsmet ฤฐnรถnรผ, and first vice-president of Cyprus Fazฤฑl Kรผรงรผk. After the occupation of the north, Greek refugees and Pontic Greeks were settled in the neighborhood, and a process of renaming began.

In 2021, Talat Pasha Street (a grand vizier convicted of the genocide of Greeks and Armenians) was renamed Justice Street.

What did Atatรผrk mean to the Pontic Greeks?

For the Pontic community, Mustafa Kemal Atatรผrk is a tragic figure. On May 19, 1919, he landed in Samsun, which marked the beginning of brutal persecution of Pontic Greeks. By 1922, the death toll exceeded 200,000 (by some estimates up to 350,000). The Kemalists burned Greek villages, sent people to the interior of the country, where most died. Greeks were locked in churches and burned alive. Greece and Cyprus have recognized these events as genocide.

Who was Nikos Kapetanidis?

A native of the city of Rize on the Black Sea, he was a journalist publishing a newspaper in Trabzon. In 1921, he was arrested, condemned at the Amasia trials (tribunals of the Kemalist movement), and sentenced to death. He was one of hundreds executed on charges of agitating for the separation of the Black Sea region under Greek leadership.
The renaming decision will take effect after all official procedures are completed. ๐Ÿ›๏ธ๐Ÿ“œ

๐Ÿฆ  Hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship: passengers from 12 countries infected, fatalities reported
International health services have been mobilized due to an outbreak of hantavirus on the cruise ship MV Hondius. The strain in question is the Andes virus โ€” the only known type of this virus capable of human-to-human transmission through close contact. This is the first major multinational cluster of its kind on a cruise ship.

What is known about those infected?

According to the latest WHO data, five laboratory-confirmed cases of Andes virus infection have been recorded. The total number of suspected and confirmed cases is eight. Three people have died. Another patient is in critical condition in South Africa.

At least 29 passengers from 12 countries left the ship before full isolation measures were implemented. These individuals are not currently being tracked by national health systems. The search continues. Authorities are also checking passengers on flights who traveled with those infected, and in some cases, crew members.

What is this virus?

Typically, hantaviruses are transmitted to humans from rodents โ€” through inhalation of particles from urine, feces, or saliva. The Andes strain is an exception: it can be transmitted between people, though this requires prolonged and very close contact (usually within families or among caregivers). The incubation period can last up to 6โ€“8 weeks, making contact tracing very difficult.

What concerns scientists?

Researchers acknowledge that much remains unclear:
ยท whether asymptomatic transmission is possible;
ยท how long a person is contagious before symptoms appear;
ยท the precise incubation period.

Potential treatments and vaccines are being urgently studied.

Where did the virus come from?

According to the leading theory, the first passengers were infected before boarding the ship โ€” during wildlife and bird watching in regions of Argentina, Chile, and Patagonia. Argentina has already begun testing rodents in the Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego regions. Then, limited transmission occurred among passengers on the ship.

What is the risk assessment?

WHO and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) state that the overall risk to the general public remains low or very low. The ECDC has sent a special team of experts to the outbreak site. The US CDC is monitoring travelers who returned to the US (Georgia, California, Arizona, Texas); no secondary cases have been identified so far. Spanish authorities are preparing a plan for the ship's disembarkation and medical care in Tenerife to prevent infection of the local population. ๐ŸŒโš ๏ธ
