**π¦Trading through the "green line": what is being sold from the northern part of Cyprus to the south
**There is a "green line" between the free areas and the occupied territory, through which limited trade is allowed. In 2025, the volume of such sales amounted to β¬13.9 million.
This is 8% less than in 2024 (it was β¬15.1 million). For comparison: in 2023 - β¬15.46 million, in 2022 β β¬14.76 million.
What is transported from north to south most often?
β finished containers (+28% YoY)
β wooden furniture β β¬2.3 million
β plastic products β β¬2.2 million
β building materials β β¬1.5 million
β waste and scrap β β¬1.4 million
β fresh fish β β¬719 thousand
β eggs β β¬662 thousand.
Vegetables and fruits have almost disappeared: there were β¬849,000 in 2024, and in 2025 β only β¬27,000.
Since the launch of the Green Line (August 2004), total sales have reached β¬167 million, including electricity.
If you live in the south and have ever wondered where some goods come from or why you can sometimes find products from the north, now you know how it officially works.**

π**Cyprus has lost three positions in the global ranking of democracy: elections are on top, governance is a failure
**The Economist Intelligence Unit analytical center has updated the democracy index for 2025. Cyprus is still listed among the "imperfect democracies", but has slipped from 37th to 40th place in the world.
The country's final score is 7.38 out of 10. Within the European Union, Cyprus ranks 22nd out of 27, next to Bulgaria in terms of the quality of public administration.
What saves the picture:
β honesty and transparency of elections β 9.17 points
β freedom of speech and assembly β 8.82
What pulls you down:
β government work β only 5.36 points
Experts note a "management gap": electoral procedures are fine-tuned, but problems begin after the votes are counted. There is no real accountability, the policy is poorly implemented, and transparency is lame.
, Other pain points:
β political parties have lost clear distinctions β the centrists and the right have merged into one bloc
β there is a system of personal connections (clientelism), not professional qualities
β lawsuits last for years β this is one of the slowest courts in the EU
β the Prosecutor General is both an adviser and a prosecutor, which kills independent control
Bottom line: people are losing faith in elections. Turnout is falling, apathy is growing, and talented young people are leaving the island.
In order to move to a "full democracy", Cyprus needs not pinpoint changes, but a deep restructuring: separation of powers, professional civil service and real transparency of power. So far, formal institutions are working, but their content is not.**

**π©οΈ Rare "hat cloud" spotted on the road from Nicosia to Limassol
**π Drivers on the highway from Nicosia to Limassol captured an unusual atmospheric phenomenon β a giant cloud appeared in the sky with a perfectly smooth "lid" resembling a dome or a hat.
βοΈ Witnesses described the cloud as a multi-layered structure: a dense thunderstorm mass below, and a smooth, layered dome above. This effect is caused by strong updrafts and temperature differences.
π¬οΈ This phenomenon is most often associated with the formation of powerful cumulonimbus clouds and may indicate unstable weather in the region.**
πΈ Videos are already spreading widely on social media β many are comparing the cloud to a UFO or a "portal to the sky."
β οΈ Meteorologists note that such structures can signal increasing winds, local precipitation, or thunderstorms.

π**Gas to Egypt, bills to Cypriots: why electricity won't get cheaper until 2031
**Cyprus has signed a major agreement to sell all gas from the Aphrodite field to Egypt. The contract is for at least 15 years. First production is expected around 2031, with a final investment decision in 2027.
For the Kronos field, timelines are slightly closer: production could begin in 2027β2028. Pegasus and Glaukos will not deliver gas until at least 2033.
β‘οΈ Why aren't bills dropping?
Even when gas starts flowing, the effect on tariffs will not be immediate. Meanwhile, Cyprus remains dependent on expensive diesel. The Vasilikos gas terminal project, launched back in 2018, is still not completed. The previous contractor defaulted on the contract, and a new tender has only been promised.
βοΈ Solar energy creates other problems
Installed solar panel capacity has reached around 900 MW, but the grid cannot handle it. At peak hours, generation is double the demand, and the excess is simply lost. New installations are often refused grid connection.
π Batteries and hydrogen are not a cure-all
By 2026, 120 MW of storage is planned, but on cloudy days, it is useless. Hydrogen is still only at the small pilot stage.
π The energy link with Europe: blessing or burden?
Cyprus plans to connect to the European power grid via a submarine cable. But the island will have to cover 63% of the project's cost β and these expenses will be built into electricity bills.
π° The main reason for high tariffs is dependence on imported fuel and global prices. Regional conflicts do not make them worse, but they do not lower them either.**
**πGas will go to Egypt, and Cypriots will be left with the bills. Real price reductions should not be expected before 2031.**
