๐ Minister: Cyprus is paying for past mistakes in civil defence
The Interior Minister admitted to lawmakers that Cyprus is not sufficiently prepared for emergencies. The national shelter program implemented between 1999 and 2013 covered only about 30% of the population, and this figure remained unchanged until 2023.
Authorities have now shifted their strategy. The focus is moving toward using large public spaces such as parking areas, hotels, and churches as emergency shelters. As a result, overall coverage has increased to around 45% of the population.
In addition, the government has introduced a 5% building density bonus for new construction projects that include underground shelters, encouraging developers to integrate civil defence infrastructure into future buildings.

๐ Undersea Tunnel Between Turkey and Northern Cyprus: Ambitious Project for the Eastern Mediterranean
A proposal is being discussed in the region to build an undersea tunnel that could connect Turkey with the northern part of Cyprus. The tunnel is expected to run beneath the Mediterranean Sea and could become one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects ever envisioned in the Eastern Mediterranean.
โก Energy and Infrastructure Corridor
According to preliminary plans, the tunnel could serve not only as a transport link but also as a major infrastructure corridor. It may accommodate electricity transmission lines, pipelines, and digital communication cables.
Such infrastructure could strengthen energy cooperation and improve the resilience of regional networks.
๐ Transport Connection
The project is also being considered as a permanent transport corridor between mainland Turkey and the northern part of the island.
This infrastructure could facilitate logistics, trade, and tourism, while reducing dependence on maritime and air transport.
๐ก๏ธ Geopolitical Significance
Amid ongoing disputes over maritime boundaries and energy exploration in the Eastern Mediterranean, the project could carry significant strategic importance.
If implemented, the tunnel could become a major engineering achievement and a new element of transport and energy connectivity in the region.
