β οΈ New Test SMS Alert to Be Sent in the Coming Days β Full System Launch Expected in June
Head of Civil Defence Maria Papaioannou announced that another test of the mass SMS alert system will take place in the coming days. The first trial revealed several technical issues, which are now being reviewed together with telecom providers in order to correct the problems. The full early warning system is expected to become operational in early June.
Papaioannou urged citizens to follow official instructions and reminded people about preparing an βemergency backpackβ with essential items.
Following the recent attack near Akrotiri, questions about civil protection have moved to the forefront. Authorities say their goal is to make the alert system as reliable and effective as possible.

π Cyprus at the Center of Geopolitics: Why the Island Is Considered One of the Most Protected Points in the Eastern Mediterranean
Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, many people are asking a natural question: how safe is Cyprus today? A closer look at the regional map and the military infrastructure surrounding the island reveals that Cyprus plays a much larger role than simply being a tourist destination. In reality, it is one of the key strategic security hubs in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Historically, the island has always been crucial for controlling maritime routes. Even during the era of the British Empire, Cyprus was viewed as an observation platform between Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. That is why, after Cyprus gained independence in 1960, the United Kingdom retained two sovereign military territories on the island β RAF Akrotiri and Dhekelia.
Today, the Akrotiri base is considered one of the most important British military installations outside the UK. From here, reconnaissance missions are conducted, airspace patrols are carried out, and allied operations in the Middle East are supported. In practice, the base functions as a logistical and intelligence hub for NATO forces in the region.
In recent years, the military presence around the island has only increased. The waters of the Eastern Mediterranean regularly host naval vessels from the United Kingdom, France, and other NATO members, while surveillance aircraft and monitoring systems operate in the skies. The air and sea around Cyprus are under constant observation and control.
The region is saturated with advanced monitoring systems: long-range radar installations, satellite surveillance, maritime patrol operations, and elements of air-defense infrastructure. This means that any potential threat β whether a drone or a missile β would likely be detected long before approaching the island.
Geography also plays a critical role. Cyprus lies between Israel, Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, and Egypt, not far from the strategically vital Suez Canal. This position effectively makes the island a natural control point for both transportation and military routes across the region.
For this reason, many analysts believe that the strengthening of military presence around Cyprus is not a sign of preparation for conflict, but rather a preventive measure aimed at maintaining regional stability and deterring threats. In a volatile region, the island remains an important platform for security coordination and monitoring.
π **Simply put, Cyprus today is not a frontline of war, but a geopolitical shield and a strategic observation center of the Eastern Mediterranean.

π¨ Alarming Situation with Civil Defense Shelters in Cyprus: Many Closed, Poorly Maintained, and Residents Donβt Know Where to Go
Amid growing tensions in the region, increasing concern is being raised about the state of civil defense shelters in Cyprus. According to local residents, not only are there too few shelters, but many of them are closed or in extremely poor condition.
Reports indicate that several shelters in one area were completely locked. The last one was reportedly opened only after residents personally demanded that municipal workers unlock it. This has sparked serious concern, since in a real emergency every minute could be critical.
Even more worrying is the fact that many residents do not even know where the nearest shelters are located. Although there is a mobile application showing their locations, many people do not use it and therefore remain unaware of where they could seek protection in case of danger.
Critics argue that a simple mobile app is not enough when public safety is at stake. They call for a large-scale information campaign, including direct notifications, phone alerts, and clearer communication with citizens.
Another major concern is the actual condition of some shelters. According to witnesses, several appear neglected and not ready for use. In the context of growing regional instability, this situation is causing increasing anxiety among residents, who fear the infrastructure may not be prepared if a real crisis occurs.

πBritish Pilot from Akrotiri Base Shot Down Two Drones and Went to Sleep
An F-35 fighter pilot based at the British Akrotiri base in Cyprus has become the first in Royal Air Force history to shoot down enemy targets in real combat using a stealth aircraft. Over Jordan, within four hours, he destroyed two Shahed drones with Asraam missiles.
The hardest part was not mixing up friend from foe β the sky was full of American and Israeli aircraft. No euphoria, just work: check, lock, shoot down β and move on.
Returning to base in the early morning, the pilot had a local Keo beer and went to sleep β just a few hours before his next mission. No time to celebrate, the work is non-stop.

πThree Foods That Keep Your Skin Young
Nutritionists have revealed what you should eat to keep your skin firm and glowing for longer. The secret lies in foods rich in vitamins and antioxidants.
Red bell pepper is a leader in vitamin C content. It stimulates the body to produce collagen, which is responsible for skin elasticity. Just half a pepper a day is enough to keep your skin looking fresh.
Spinach contains vitamin A (for hydration) and folic acid (for cell renewal). Eating it just a couple of times a week is sufficient.
Eggplants protect the skin from aging thanks to flavonoids β they prevent cell oxidation. One eggplant a day can help keep wrinkles at bay.

πFoot-and-Mouth Disease in Cyprus: Nine New Outbreaks in Larnaca, 20,000 Animals Already Culled
A foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Cyprus is rapidly escalating. Veterinary services have detected nine more infected farms in the Larnaca province β eight in the Livadia area and one in Dromolaxia. All new cases were found on goat farms. The total number of infected farms has now reached 32, including two cattle farms. The livestock population scheduled for mandatory culling has already exceeded 20,000.
Farmers are in despair: European regulations require the culling of all animals within an infection zone without exception. Cypriot authorities are asking Brussels to soften the requirements due to the island's specific circumstances, but the EU remains firm for now. Producers fear the epidemic will destroy their farms and leave families without a means of livelihood.

πAfter Drone Attack on British Base, Cyprus Offered NATO Membership
Former European Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas stated that following the Iranian drone strike on the British Akrotiri base, Cyprus has a "suitable moment" to apply for NATO membership. According to him, the island remains the only one in the region not part of the alliance, even though neighboring Greece and Turkey are already members. The attack highlighted Cyprus's vulnerability and the need for reliable security guarantees.
However, experts doubt this is possible in the near future. The main problem is the unresolved conflict on the island and Turkey's stance. As a NATO member, Ankara has veto power over the admission of new countries. Additionally, Cyprus has maintained neutrality for many years to avoid complicating negotiations about the island's future.

πStelios Haji-Ioannou Foundation Allocates β¬10 Million for Doctors on Small Greek Islands
The charitable foundation of Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou has launched a healthcare support program for 47 small islands in Greece. Over seven years, the foundation will channel β¬10 million towards the salaries of 80 doctors who will work in local medical clinics.
Each medic will receive an additional β¬1,500 per month on top of their state salary. This is intended to cover the high cost of living in remote areas and attract specialists. The idea comes from Haji-Ioannou himself, who has long been aware of the islanders' problems with access to healthcare.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis noted that this is the first time a private donor has invested not in infrastructure, but in human potential. The Minister of Health added that it will no longer be necessary to bring in military doctors to replace civilian ones.
The Haji-Ioannou Foundation is also known for its free meal programs, business awards, scholarships, and free conference spaces for NGOs in Athens and Nicosia.

**UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy has stated that the country has the legal right to launch strikes on Iranian missile installations from the Akrotiri base in Cyprus. Currently, F-35 and Typhoon fighters are only shooting down drones and missiles for defensive purposes. But if necessary, Britain is prepared to directly attack Iranian military targets.
"We have satellites and intelligence to track threats," Lammy explained. London has already issued licenses to the US for using the bases for defensive strikes. The destroyer HMS Dragon will soon arrive in the region to strengthen air defense. Britain is also evacuating its citizens β over 140,000 people have registered with the Foreign Office.

π βWhy Are There No Mandatory Bomb Shelters?β β Public Concern Growing in Cyprus
Amid rising regional tensions, criticism toward the authorities is becoming louder among residents. Many people believe the government should have long ago introduced a law requiring underground shelters in every new building constructed on the island.
According to critics, the safety of citizens should have been a top priority. However, many argue that for years other issues were given more attention, while the protection of ordinary people was pushed into the background.
βThe government should think about the people who support it and keep the country running,β residents say in online discussions.
As the situation in the region becomes more uncertain, this topic is being raised more frequently. More and more people are asking whether the island is truly prepared for a potential emergency and if there are enough safe places where civilians could take shelter if needed.
Public debate continues to intensify, and concerns about civil protection and infrastructure are becoming an increasingly sensitive issue for many residents of Cyprus.
