πCyprus Moves Toward Legalizing Phone Surveillance to Tackle Organized Crime
The Cypriot government has approved a draft bill that would allow authorities to intercept phone communications as part of efforts to combat organized crime. The measure is designed to equip law enforcement with stronger investigative tools against criminal networks.
Officials say the system will operate under strict legal safeguards, but if adopted, it will give police the authority to monitor communications linked to serious offences. President Nikos Christodoulides reportedly oversaw the initiative ahead of the Cabinet meeting.
The proposal is now being submitted to Parliament. If lawmakers approve it, security services will gain expanded powers in the fight against criminal groups.

The roots of the Cypriot Carnival trace back to the Byzantine era, while its modern form took shape in the early 20th century, especially in Limassol. Traditions of masquerades, satire, and street celebrations date even further back to the periods of Frankish and Venetian rule.
Today, Carnival remains a symbol of unity between generations β a celebration of freedom, creativity, and joy that parents proudly pass on to their children.
