Parliament passed the Waste (Amending) Law 2025 — 29 for, 4 against. Administrative fines doubled: inspector €8,000 (was €4,000), chief inspector €40,000 (was €20,000). MPs warn of about 800 illegal dump sites island‑wide and say demolition‑waste trade is controlled by criminal networks; inspectors report threats. Critics argue penalties alone won’t work without rigorous enforcement, funding and community clean‑ups. Calls for summer removals, prevention, public education and decisive action against criminal groups to curb fire and safety risks.

🖼Friends of Akamas: Road Works Driving National Park from Bad to Worse
Friends of Akamas warns Forestry Department road projects in Akamas National Park and adjacent Natura 2000 areas are worsening conditions. Piecemeal repairs called "restoration" miss real priorities and risk keeping routes open to private vehicles. Ecological reports recommended closure of the Loutra–Fontana Amorosa road, yet upgrades are proposed. Similar plans for Aspros Potamos–Lara–Toxeutra ignore limiting vehicle access. Ranger adverts lack a clear management plan. Group calls for stronger protection and conservation‑first planning.

Government seeks least painful plan as water cuts loom; demand management and a 10% reduction to water supplied to Provincial Organisations stir political reaction.
