🧑🌾Farmers furious as authorities seek seven years of retroactive environmental fees
Water Development Department sent letters demanding environmental and resource fees from farmers and agri‑firms for the past seven years. Decision made in 2017, applied in 2020, bills issued now en masse.
Farm organisations call for immediate suspension. Thomas Thoma: bills up to €110,000 — "Will they have to sell land to pay?" Tasos Giapanis: "Retroactive, no consultation after pandemic and drought."
MPs denounce delay and water management. Agriculture Ministry to meet farmers Friday; promises payment easing and meter‑based adjustments. Controversy over golf courses still drawing water; ministry says supply reduced and will stop in coming months.

💦Nicosia water cuts plan: alternate 18‑hour shifts under consideration
Govt cut water allocations to provincial bodies by 10%. EOA Nicosia draws scenarios: if savings fall short, plan would supply half the city 18 hours, then the other half 18 hours, repeating until Sunday when full supply resumes, then restart Monday. Network losses now 20%, target 15% in four years. EOA warns cuts could raise unbilled losses 7–10% without revision. Calls to approve operating rules and adopt punitive tariffs for excess use, backed by public information. EOA reports 8,000 repairs, network upgrades, smart meters, new unit for dangerous buildings, permit clearance 94% planning, 99% building. Ready to manage Kotsiatis landfill for biogas energy.

Cypriot team develops combo to breach aggressive tumors
Researchers at the Institute’s Department of Genetic, Therapeutic and Ultrastructural Pathology of Cancer, led by Prof. Fotios Bekris, report a strategy to improve drug access to solid tumors. They repurposed the antihistamine ketotifen, used therapeutic ultrasound to raise vessel permeability and gave standard chemotherapy. Result: reduced tissue stiffness, better perfusion, deeper drug delivery, tumor shrinkage and revived anti‑tumor immunity in preclinical models; with nanotherapy and immunotherapy produced complete regressions in breast cancer models. Uses approved tools and may speed clinical testing; funded by a €1.5M ERC grant.

🧸 Scandal on a Larnaca-bound flight: passenger nearly removed over a forgotten toy
An unusual incident occurred on a Cyprus Airways flight from Paris to Larnaca. Before departure, an airport staff member brought a plush teddy bear into the cabin after it was found near the boarding gate and asked if it belonged to anyone. No one responded, so the toy was handed to a flight attendant and placed in the overhead luggage compartment.
One passenger became outraged and insisted that the discovery be reported to the captain, calling the item a potential security threat. The captain contacted ground services and received confirmation that the teddy bear had been inspected and posed no danger.
However, the man continued to press the issue and was told that if he wished, he could leave the aircraft. Despite the dispute, the flight departed without delays, and the owner of the toy never came forward.

💦Water Development Department: 10% Reduction Not Equal to Widespread Water Cuts
Department clarifies: the 10% reduction is not a household shut-off programme and does not set supply schedules. The cut applies to total volume delivered to local authorities as a precautionary demand-management measure to preserve reserves and avoid stricter measures. It targets overconsumption and aims to prevent household rationing. A 10% saving, nationally roughly 10 million cubic metres, is a common drought tool to help keep the system operational into 2026. Early action reduces the need for wider interventions; coordination with local authorities continues. If each consumer trims daily use by ~10%, impacts on everyday life should be limited.
