🦩Akrotiri Salt Lake: flamingo numbers drop from 13,000 to 47
Akrotiri Salt Lake, a Ramsar-listed wetland in Cyprus, recorded just 47 flamingos this month versus about 13,000 in previous years, authorities report. The Hunting and Wildlife Service links the collapse to deteriorating inflow water quality and intensifying development; nearby Makria lake shows similar decline. NGOs BirdLife Cyprus and Terra Cypria say the system can no longer sustain birds, with intermittent waters pointing to polluted tributaries. Kouris mayor Pantelis Georgiou warned of chaotic management, groundwater threats and villages still off the sewer network. Reports claim up to 500 tonnes per hour of untreated discharge near Lady’s Mile and accuse contractors of illegal dumping. The parliamentary environment committee demanded an Audit Office review, warning that without urgent action up to half the salt lake could be lost, with lasting public‑health and biodiversity consequences.

🌱Retroactive water bills threaten Cypriot farmers
Farmers across Cyprus report sudden bills for water use dating back to 2017, some topping €110,000. The Water Development Department is demanding retroactive fees—one cent per ton introduced in 2017—now payable by early April. Notices target farms using boreholes, springs or rivers; many say these were the only option during droughts. Where use wasn’t metered, the department will estimate consumption, a method farmers call unclear and unfair. Agricultural groups refuse payment and seek urgent talks with Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou, warning the charges could bankrupt family farms.

🦅Vulture Perched on Roadside Sign Near Oroklini for Two Days
BirdLife Cyprus tracked the bird by GPS; residents sent multiple reports after it sat on a motorway sign for two days.
The bird is Galatia (ring HAH), 4 years old, from the second batch brought from Spain in 2023; pupils in Paphos gave her the name.
Presence so close to housing and away from natural habitat raised concern for her condition; capture for a health check was not possible.
After a few days Galatia returned to her colony; poisoning or exhaustion could not be ruled out.
Team will continue close monitoring and thanks to those who reported sightings.

"God told me to go to Cyprus" — Sold everything in UK for a fresh start
57‑year‑old Angela Ward from Clacton‑on‑Sea sold almost all her belongings, bought a one‑way ticket and left the UK with two suitcases. Said she felt trapped and invisible despite degrees, a high‑paying NHS consultant job and outward success. Resigned in 2023, faced debts, rising costs and a nervous breakdown. House wouldn’t sell, she rented it out and systematically sold possessions. Death of her dog triggered the final break. In December 2025 she moved to Cyprus to begin anew.

🚗 Crash in Larnaca Raises Concerns Over Takata Airbag System: Airbags Failed to Deploy
A traffic accident in the Larnaca area has sparked serious debate about vehicle safety in Cyprus. The driver claims that during a strong collision the airbags did not deploy, despite the car having recently undergone an official airbag replacement as part of the Takata recall.

The issue came to light after the driver shared photos and videos on social media. The footage shows significant damage to the front of the vehicle, while both the steering wheel and passenger area show no signs of airbag deployment.

According to the vehicle owner, the replacement was carried out at an authorised service centre of the manufacturer, and the car was returned to service as fully compliant and safe. However, the crash appears to suggest otherwise, raising doubts about the quality of the repair work and the effectiveness of the newly installed airbags.

The incident once again highlights concerns over inspection standards, service centre accountability, and the real level of vehicle safety following recall campaigns.

“My Larnaca”: A Response to the Wave of Negativity Around the City
Against the backdrop of recent incidents in Larnaca and the growing number of reports focusing on the city’s “dark side,” author Louis Perentos has spoken out with an emotional statement, calling for a more balanced and honest view of reality. According to him, the tendency of some media outlets and social networks to exaggerate and amplify negativity makes it necessary to raise one’s voice—especially when freedom of expression remains one of the few tools citizens still have.

Perentos stresses that the Larnaca being portrayed by so-called “well-wishers” does not reflect the true character of the city. His Larnaca is deeply rooted in the hearts of its people and cannot be eroded by mudslinging. He does not claim that everything is perfect—problems exist here, as they do in every city—but he insists that this is only part of the picture.

Real Larnaca, he says, is made up of everything together: the beautiful and the difficult, the straightforward and the contradictory. It is the narrow streets of the city centre, the humid, salty air, religious processions and exhibition openings, farewells to loved ones and strangers alike, the salt lakes and Finikoudes, school graduation celebrations, people’s smiles and workers’ hard labour. All of this—and much more—is Larnaca.

This is Larnaca with a deeply human face, one that quietly calls him back whenever the exhaustion of everyday life brings him to his knees.
Louis Perentos
