Cyprus hospitals near capacity as viruses surge
Public hospitals report roughly 90% bed occupancy; emergency departments and general admissions spiking, OKYpY spokesperson Charalambos Charilaou says. Staff working round the clock, assessing and discharging patients to keep a balance between admissions and releases. Private hospitals lack enough beds in infectious diseases, pulmonology and pathology, limiting alternative capacity. Officials say public hospitals are in better financial and operational shape than in 2019 and ask the public to follow health guidance and take precautions.

👮When and How Police Will Use Body Cameras
Police Association president presented a revised bill allowing uniformed, plainclothes and vehicle officers to wear and activate portable cameras on duty. Cameras will not record continuously; activation only under specified orders. Chest‑mounted devices will show a visible light so people know recording occurs. Footage will protect officers from unfounded complaints and help improve practice. If an officer cannot switch on a camera during an attack, no legal issue. Recordings will be processed lawfully. Citizens may film, but misuse or posting that violates personal data is problematic.

👮 Filmed Without Consent and Threatened to Report to Iran: Man Arrested in Northern Cyprus for Blackmailing Students
In the unrecognized TRNC, police have detained a man who secretly photographed and filmed two Iranian female students without their consent. The incident took place on January 26 at a café on the campus of the Morphou University of Health and Social Sciences (KSTU). At the time, the students were not wearing hijabs, which the suspect allegedly used to blackmail them.

According to local media, the man threatened to send the photos and videos to Iranian authorities, a move that could have had serious consequences for the students in their home country. Law enforcement officials described his actions as a serious violation of privacy and a threat to the victims’ reputation.

The suspect, Amirali Behboudi, has been remanded in custody for three days for investigation. Two mobile phones were seized and are currently being examined; authorities do not rule out the possibility of uncovering additional similar incidents.
