🔊 Fatal crash in #Limassol: Van entered opposite lane and collided head-on with motorcyclist – 51 year old Giorgos Georgiou killed (06/11/2025) #RoadReportCY
A fatal road accident occurred last night in Limassol, claiming the life of 51-year-old Giorgos Georgiou, formerly of Limassol.
At around 8:30 p.m., a 41-year-old Bulgarian man was driving a van along the old Limassol–Nicosia road, heading towards Limassol. While on the Moni overpass, the driver allegedly crossed into the opposite lane and collided head-on with a large motorcycle driven by the 51-year-old Greek Cypriot, who was wearing a protective helmet.
As a result of the violent impact, the motorcyclist sustained serious injuries and was rushed by ambulance to a private hospital in Limassol, where—despite the efforts of doctors—he succumbed to his injuries.
A breathalyzer test administered to the van driver showed a reading of 48mg%, more than double the legal limit of 22mg%. A narcotest was also conducted, which came back negative. A court warrant was issued for his arrest, and he was taken into custody to assist the investigation.
The Limassol Traffic Department is investigating the circumstances of the fatal crash.
----
Drove without license, insurance, and under the influence – Police conduct reenactment and further investigation
The 41-year-old Bulgarian national arrested in connection with the death of 51-year-old motorcyclist Giorgos Georgiou was found to have been driving without a valid license or insurance, and under the influence of alcohol.
The suspect was brought before the Limassol District Court, which approved the request of the Limassol Traffic Police to detain him for five days. The court noted that if the investigation is completed sooner, the suspect may be released earlier.
According to police, the driver’s alcohol test result was 48mg%, while the legal limit is 22mg%. The offenses under investigation include causing death by negligence, driving under the influence, and driving without a license and insurance. Authorities confirmed he does not hold a Cypriot driver’s license.
He underwent a drug test, which was negative. The suspect was arrested under a court warrant and remains in custody. He is expected to be interrogated today with the assistance of an interpreter.
According to Philenews, the involved vehicle will be examined by the Electromechanical Services Department, while police are investigating the suspect’s whereabouts before the crash and where he consumed alcohol. Investigators will also take statements from his acquaintances and are reviewing the ownership status of the van, which is registered under a different person.
A post-mortem examination was conducted today at the Nicosia General Hospital by state pathologist Dr. Angeliki Papetta, who determined that the cause of death was hemorrhagic shock due to multiple injuries sustained in the collision.
An on-site reenactment of the crash is expected to take place by the Traffic Headquarters special investigation unit.
The fatal collision occurred at around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday night, when the 41-year-old suspect’s van veered into the opposite lane on the old Limassol–Nicosia road, near the Moni overpass, crashing head-on into the motorcycle driven by Giorgos Georgiou, who was wearing a helmet at the time. #Cyprus

🔥Five buses of same model burned in Cyprus; grounding limited to Paphos
12 buses of the same type were grounded in Paphos after a bus caught fire; roughly 65 similar buses across Cyprus remain operating. Security analyst Nikos Kamakiotis says used fleets from the UK and elsewhere were resold here, concentrating vehicles of one manufacturer and model. The Paphos fire is the fifth case involving that model in Cyprus since 2018, indicating a pattern. He questions why on‑board automatic fire suppression did not prevent spread, reports finding online records of problems, and criticises use of aging buses, including a 19‑year‑old school bus.
