Fines for offences of another era — horse speeding to clothes drying
Cyprus 2025. Justice Ministry bill before Parliament sets 85-euro fixed fine for excessive speed when driving a horse on the road. Same fine for shaking or beating carpets or similar items onto a road from any part of a house or building. Also 85 euros for intentionally obstructing a road by placing rope, cord or line across or along it, or for hanging clothes, billboards, slogans or other things to dry or display. Ministry converted old pound penalties into euros without updating the archaic list of offences.

😱Bones for consumption: 200 kg seized again
Customs disrupt cross‑border smuggling ring. 26‑year‑old Israeli stopped at Pyla; rented van held 79 crates with about 4,000 untaxed cigarette cartons. Authorities say route aimed at exporting to Israel. Later van stopped near Athienou‑Lymbia; 51‑year‑old Turkish Cypriot driver held large tobacco consignments, linked to organised group — he and his sister were caught weeks earlier; he had paid €20,000 settlement. At Agios Dometios crossing officers found ~200 kg animal bones and skins in a van — same vehicle moved 300 kg a month earlier. Suspects said products were for Africans in Cyprus to consume. One paid €600. Potential tax losses would exceed €500,000. Two arrested on tobacco charges remanded seven days.
