🗣️Cypriot MEPs react to Erhürman's 'election'
Most welcome Erhürman's emergence as an opening for renewed Cyprus talks, but stress everything depends on how Ankara will respond.
DISY’s Loukas Fourlas: a break from hardline Tatar, time to negotiate toward a viable solution.
AKEL’s Giorgos Georgiou: Turkish pressure failed; protests against the Turkish envoy noted.
DIKO, S&D: opportunity exists, but must factor geopolitics, energy and EU–Turkey ties.
ELAM’s Geadi: rejects recognition, accuses colleagues of legitimising the occupying entity.
Independent Panayiotou: outcome reflects shared hope for reunification.

🤝Japan Appoints First Woman Prime Minister
Sanae Takaichi takes office. Historic step in male-dominated Japan. Longtime conservative and self-styled Iron Lady. Record shows little break with traditional norms: she opposes same-sex marriage and female succession to the imperial throne. Her agenda centers on modest family incentives and childcare and remains aligned with the conservative party. Seen domestically as a tactical pick for the right. Symbolic for young women, but critics say substantive gender reforms are unlikely. She now faces economic, inflation and diplomatic tests.

🚨Nicosia raid in Demosthenous killing
Police raided a Nicosia home linked to the Oct 17 shooting in Limassol that killed 49‑year‑old businessman and agent Stavros Demosthenous while he drove with his 18‑year‑old son.
A 30‑year‑old inmate suspected of ordering the hit was arrested earlier; he allegedly told another 30‑year‑old to buy the getaway motorcycle — that suspect was arrested and remanded eight days.
Four more men were detained within days (three Greek Cypriots, one Greek national).
Investigators say mistakes — a police helicopter, CCTV, an abandoned motorcycle in Agios Tychonas, a jockey hat by a burnt van in Germasogeia and a bright yellow shirt — produced key leads. Probe continues.

📊ECHR ruling on unfilled Solidarity seat from 2016 Cyprus vote
22 May 2016: Eleni Theocharous, elected in Limassol for Solidarity, declined the Cyprus parliamentary seat to remain MEP. Runner-up Georgios Papadopoulos was declared MP but his election was annulled after courts found a legal gap: the law allowed filling a vacancy only after the parliamentary term began. Amendments in 2017 and 2019 were disputed and the seat stayed vacant for long periods. ECHR found a breach of Article 3 of Protocol No.1, saying the State failed to provide a timely legal remedy and voters' choice was frustrated. Court awarded €8,000 for non-pecuniary damage.

📝Pancyprian Medical Association protests recognition of occupied-area groups by European medical body
Pancyprian Medical Association (PMA) protests what it calls the illegal recognition of trade unions from the occupied areas as Cyprus representatives by the Federation Européenne des Médecins Salariés. The body reportedly displayed the emblem of the self‑proclaimed entity. PMA says it abstains from participation as protest and to oppose distortion of international law. A recent questionnaire naming Cyprus “Kibris” prompted protests by PMA, the Panhellenic Medical Association and the Athens Medical Association. PMA lodged representations with European authorities and warns of systematic attempts by the self‑proclaimed entity to exploit international professional bodies. PMA thanks its Greek counterparts for steady support.

🚚Transporters A' start indefinite strike
Members of the Pan‑Cyprian Union of Transporters A', affiliated to G.S. POBEK, vote unanimously to begin an indefinite strike from 3 November after measures on 7 October. They demand legislative changes: review of rules banning auxiliary spotlights, adjustment of truck height limits, and reclassification of open‑top trailers so they are not automatically illegal when open and lacking side markers. They also protest illegal fuel supplies from occupied areas and use of heating oil creating unfair competition, slow port handling and non‑enforcement of rules on unregistered or improperly licensed vehicles. Union asks members to contact the Board or G.S. POBEK for coordination and next steps.
